HOMILY OF THE 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Year A, by Rev. Fr. Gabriel Osiegbu

SALT AND LIGHT OF THE WORLD

Today’s Gospel reading was taken from Matthew 5: 13-16

Today's gospel teaches us that those who follow the instructions of our Lord Jesus Christ are the salt and light of the world. The chemical properties of salt makes it very useful. Salt is a cleansing agent, purifying agent and also a preserving agent. In ancient Jewish times, it was used in sacrifices; and also even during pagan religious sacrifices.

Jesus says we are the salt of the earth because when we have salt in us, we add sweetness to the people around us. When people do not want to associate with us, when they are irritated or repulsed by us, it implies that we have lost our saltiness but if the opposite is the case, that is, if people want to be around us, if they want to hear what we have to say, if they enjoy our company then it implies that we have the qualities of salt in us and this is a very good thing.

In a similar vein, light brings warmth and also brings direction. It can be likened to the traffic lights on the road that gives us direction. The traffic light directs us, telling us when to stop, move etc.
If we are the light of the world, we will give direction to people around us. People will want to emulate us, follow us, be like us and be around us. Jesus Christ is what gives us direction. It is upon the light of Jesus Christ that we ought to model our lives.

Today's homilst encouraged us to be of service to our families, communities, society, the world, saying that there is a particular kind of joy that the light of Jesus brings and it knows no tribe or background or gender. You cannot cover up the rays of light. Once there is light, there is light. There are people who want to be like us, we should encourage them by being the true light of Christ.

He went further to admonish that we need to change our bad ways of life to good ones so that the light of God can come into us. In conclusion, we must let the light of God shine on us and around us so that we can glorify God’s name.

Homily of the Solemnity of Christ the King, Year C.

Today’s homily was given by Deacon Sylvester. He reminded us that, “At Christmas, we celebrate the nativity of out lord Jesus Christ. At Lent, we celebrate the torture and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. At Easter, we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Today we celebrate Christ as our universal King, the King of the whole universe, the King of the whole world.”

This solemnity was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925. At that time, people began to lose faith in God and started to doubt the existence of God because of the untold hardships and sufferings that came after the First World war. Evil leaders who claimed absolute power used it to oppress their citizens. World leaders such as Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin amongst others ruled with an iron fist.

Pope Pius XI instituted this solemnity to remind the people that Christ is the sovereign of the whole universe. There is no authority on earth that can negate the power of our Lord Jesus. Every leader on earth is subjected to the reign, kingship, power and authority of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Deacon Sylvester went on to say that there can be no lasting peace on earth unless we subject ourselves to our Lord Jesus Christ. Unfortunately some parts of humanity have refused to subject themselves to the reign of our lord Jesus Christ. The world can only know peace if everybody can submit themselves to the reign of our Lord Jesus Christ. Some persons have lost faith in the existence of our Lord Jesus Christ. They wonder how there is evil in the world if Jesus is the ruler of the world. They ask that, if God is all powerful and all good, how come there is evil in the world. But Saint Augustine answers this question by saying that evil is not an entity, that is, evil was not created but rather evil is simply an absence, a deprivation of good. Simply put, evil is an absence of the reign of God.

Wherever God does not reign, evil will find its way there. Therefore we should not blame God but blame ourselves for the evil in our world. We need to consecrate ourselves to the kingship of our Lord Jesus Christ. His Kingship supersedes other kingships in the world because through Christ all things were created on earth.

He emphasized that we need to actively enthrone Jesus in our lives. We have to enthrone our families to the reign of Christ. A refusal to do this is like inviting the devil to do his work which is to kill, steal and destroy and create confusion.
True joy and satisfaction can only be found in our Lord Jesus Christ. Enthroning your family to Jesus Christ is the best thing we can do. Equally, families should incorporate the habit of prayer because a family that prays together stays together.

In summary, Deacon Sylvester reminded us that by the virtue of our baptism, we enthroned our Lord Jesus Christ as our king, as such no power can equate the power of our Lord Jesus Christ.

EXCERPTS OF THE HOMILY OF 27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C BY REV. FR. GABRIEL OSIEGBU.
The readings of today center on "Faith".
Penny catechism teaches us that faith is a supernatural gift of God that enables us to believe without doubting what God has done.
Living our faith is the focus of today's readings.

In the gospel reading, Jesus instructs us that with faith as small as a mustard seed we could uproot a sycamore tree.(confer Luke 17:6)
Similarly, we could command a mountain to move and it would obey us because we have faith and faith can make the impossible possible.

The prophet Habakkuk in today's first reading was surprised by all the negativities around him. These conditions caused him to think that God had disappointed him because it seemed to him that God does not exist.

But God wants us to hold on to His word and believe in Him irrespective of our temporal conditions, because delay is not denial.

In the gospel reading, Jesus used a parable to teach us that faith is about responsibility.
In order for us to survive and thrive, we need to have firm faith in God.
The Lord has spoken to us today concerning our faith. We should not worry about suffering because we have God who will never fail. Therefore let us increase our faith, and do good works.

It was a beehive of activities today in our parish as about five associations in Lagos Archdiocese converged on the parish for their Deanery/ Archdiocesan meetings. Wondering why the Catholic Church of the Nativity Festac Town, Lagos is fast becoming a choice destination for Deanery and Archdiocesan events? Well, a visit will both impress and convince you that the large space and functional facilities among other factors are most likely driving the traffic. Beyond that, the priests and parishioners are ever willing to open their doors and arms in the service of God.
