HOMILY OF THE 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, Year A, by Rev. Fr. Gabriel Osiegbu
SALT AND LIGHT OF THE WORLD
Today’s Gospel reading was taken from Matthew 5: 13-16
Today's gospel teaches us that those who follow the instructions of our Lord Jesus Christ are the salt and light of the world. The chemical properties of salt makes it very useful. Salt is a cleansing agent, purifying agent and also a preserving agent. In ancient Jewish times, it was used in sacrifices; and also even during pagan religious sacrifices.
Jesus says we are the salt of the earth because when we have salt in us, we add sweetness to the people around us. When people do not want to associate with us, when they are irritated or repulsed by us, it implies that we have lost our saltiness but if the opposite is the case, that is, if people want to be around us, if they want to hear what we have to say, if they enjoy our company then it implies that we have the qualities of salt in us and this is a very good thing.
In a similar vein, light brings warmth and also brings direction. It can be likened to the traffic lights on the road that gives us direction. The traffic light directs us, telling us when to stop, move etc.
If we are the light of the world, we will give direction to people around us. People will want to emulate us, follow us, be like us and be around us. Jesus Christ is what gives us direction. It is upon the light of Jesus Christ that we ought to model our lives.
Today's homilst encouraged us to be of service to our families, communities, society, the world, saying that there is a particular kind of joy that the light of Jesus brings and it knows no tribe or background or gender. You cannot cover up the rays of light. Once there is light, there is light. There are people who want to be like us, we should encourage them by being the true light of Christ.
He went further to admonish that we need to change our bad ways of life to good ones so that the light of God can come into us. In conclusion, we must let the light of God shine on us and around us so that we can glorify God’s name.
