Today, the Church celebrates Saint Philip Neri the joyful saint who taught the world that holiness and joy walk together.

During the Holy Mass at SS Peter and Paul Parish, Lafia, presided over by Reverend Father Ignatius (Fr IG), the faithful were reminded of the Christian call to holiness, obedience, and perseverance in grace.

Reflecting on the readings of the day, Fr IG noted that Saint Peter calls believers to free your minds and place total trust in the grace that comes from God. He described holiness as a life set apart a conscious effort to live differently in the midst of the world, guided by truth, conscience, and the light of Christ.

We are in the world, but not of the world,” he said, encouraging the faithful to become examples through simple acts of faith, prayer, and sacrifice.

Speaking further, Fr IG praised parishioners who continue to attend Morning Mass despite weather conditions, distance, and discomfort, describing their sacrifices as signs of genuine love for God.

For those who leave the comfort of their homes to seek the Lord, he said, their reward will be great in heaven.

The celebration ended with prayers through the intercession of Saint Philip Neri, asking God to grant the faithful joyful hearts, steadfast faith, and lives rooted in holiness.

Saint Philip Neri, pray for us.

Gospel of the Day (John 19:25-34)

At that time: Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the Scripture), ‘I thirst.’ A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, ‘It is finished’, and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

Pentecost Sunday was solemnly celebrated at SS Peter and Paul Parish, Lafia, with the Holy Mass presided over by Rev. Fr. Ignatius (Fr. IG), who reflected deeply on the mystery of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church.

Drawing from the Gospel of John 20:19-23, Fr. Ignatius described Pentecost as the fulfillment of Christ’s earthly mission and the moment the Church was revealed to the world through the power of the Holy Spirit.

“The Church was conceived through the mission of Christ,” he said, “but at Pentecost, the Church was made manifest before the nations.”

He reminded the faithful that the Holy Spirit remains the life and strength of the Church, sustaining her through every persecution, trial and difficulty. “As long as the Holy Spirit remains with the Church,” he noted, “the Church will continue to flourish.”

Reflecting on the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, Fr. Ignatius urged Christians not only to seek spiritual gifts, but above all to bear visible fruits of holiness, love, patience, peace and charity in daily life.

The celebration gathered parishioners in prayer and thanksgiving as the Church universal commemorated the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the birth of the Christian community.

Gospel of the Day John 16:29-33

At that time: The disciples said to Jesus, ‘Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.’ Jesus answered them, ‘Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart: I have overcome the world.’

On the third and final day of his pastoral visit to SS Peter and Paul Parish, Lafia, 7th Sunday of Easter, His Lordship, Most Rev. David Ajang, presided over a solemn Eucharistic celebration during which Seminarian Bitrus Lumi Jacob of St. John the Baptist Mission, Keana, was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacon for the Diocese of Lafia.

In his homily, Bishop Ajang reflected on the importance of patience, prayer and perseverance in the Christian life. He reminded the faithful that God works according to His own time and that lasting blessings are often the fruit of a gradual and faithful journey.

The Bishop emphasized that the Holy Mass remains the highest form of prayer and the principal source of strength for every Christian, particularly for those called to ordained ministry.

The ordination of Deacon Jacob provided a fitting culmination to the three-day pastoral visit, which brought together the clergy, religious and lay faithful in a profound experience of faith, communion and renewal.

The faithful of SS Peter and Paul Parish give thanks to God for these grace-filled days and pray that the ministry of Deacon Bitrus Lumi Jacob may bear abundant fruits in the service of the Church.
