TOPIC: SELF CONTROL AS THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT.
TEXT: GALATIANS 5:22-23
INSIGHT: the fruits of the spirit are collections of a distinct characteristics that must be found in a believer.
A person spiritual maturity is not measured by how much you fast, your attendance in church, your level of giving, but by the fruit you possess. A person that is matured in Christ is measured entirely by their godly character.
What then is self control? Self control is the holy spirit power working within you to master your impulses, passion, desires and emotions rather than them controlling you.
Self control is very important because, it is a protective wall to all other fruits of the spirit.
Love as the first fruit of the spirit is the initiator of other fruits, while self control is the fruit that sustain other gifts of the holy spirit. The motive behind self control is what controls it.
In exercising any fruit of the spirit, if joy, peace, faith, patience are not found in it, then it is not the fruit of the spirit. Even Jesus exercised self control when he prayed that the cup should pass over Him. However, He prayed for God's will and not His emotions.
We sometimes loses or experiences delay because we're not matured enough to handle what God has for us.
5. PRACTICAL WAYS TO BUILD / ENGAGE IN SELF CONTROL
* Start with surrendering to God and not your will power or strength.
* Starve the flesh and feed the spirit.
* Flee from temptation
* Practice small obedience everyday.
* Stay accountable.
Accountability is not a sign of weakness but a sign of wisdom. The flesh ought to be guided, protected and be put in control.
CONCLUSION: The church is a community to checkmate each other. The only thing that can destroy you is yourself. Without self control, you will never grow and that can destroy all what God has blessed you with.
Remember God cannot commit something valuable to a vessel that does not have self control. The motive behind self control is what control it. So don't allow anything negative to control your self control. I pray that the Lord give us the grace to have self control in everything we do. Amen..
