RBT Passage: Nehemiah 11-13

THE LORD OF THE SABBATH

Memory Verse: "Then he said to them. "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." Mark 2:27-28, NIV

Text: Mark 2:23-28

Mark 2:23-28 NIV
[23] One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.

[24] The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

[25] He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

[26] In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

[27] Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

[28] So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

________________________________
Sabbath means to rest from labour. It is also a day to be spent in worship and reverence to God. In the Mosaic Law, strict regulations were laid down regarding its observance. It was observed from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday, during which no work or creative labour was done. However, the Early Church changed the Sabbath to Sunday in commemoration of the resurrection of Christ, by whom the work of redemption was completed.

Jesus' disciples picked grain as they were passing through a field on the Sabbath to feed their hungry stomachs. This action offended the Pharisees, who strictly observed the Sabbath law. While defending His disciples, Jesus reminded the Pharisees that King David ate the bread reserved for priests when he was hungry. Jesus also told them that He is the Lord of the Sabbath and the Sabbath was made for man, not the other way round. Sabbath's law against work was to ensure people rested on the Sabbath, not to let people starve. Therefore, Jesus was just letting His disciples get food on the Sabbath.

The Lord of the Sabbath has authority in heaven and on earth to do what is just and right. When we submit to Jesus' authority and obey His instructions, we can never offend the law, as our lifestyle has already fulfilled the intention of the law.

THE LORD OF THE SABBATH

RBT: Nehemiah 11-13

Memory Verse: Then He said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." Mark 2:27-28, NIV

Text: Mark 2:18-28

Mark 2:18-28 NIV
[18] Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

[19] Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them.

[20] But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.

[21] “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.

[22] And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”

[27] Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

[28] So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

The Sabbath is often viewed in different and conflicting ways among people. For some, the Sabbath is a set of rules meant to restrict them from having fun. For others, it becomes an excuse for self-indulgence, living without regard for God or His purpose. However, Sabbath is neither a burden nor a licence for selfish living, but a gracious invitation to rest in God.

In today's passage, Jesus' critics questioned His disciples concerning fasting. Jesus responded by stating that His disciples are to rejoice. Explaining further, Jesus used a parable of an unshrunk patch to illustrate the fact that He came to completely transform the lives of His followers - not merely patch up their old lives. When the Pharisees queried Jesus on why His disciples were picking a handful of grain to satisfy their hunger on a Sabbath day, Jesus emphasised that the Sabbath was not meant to restrict necessities; that meeting true human needs and compassion takes precedence over custom, ritual, ceremony, and tradition. Jesus declared Himself "Lord of the Sabbath", thus freeing His disciples from legalism and affirming His authority. By redefining Sabbath rest, Jesus shifts focus from ritual observance to a relational connection with God.

As Christians, let us embrace Jesus' teachings on rest, recognising Sabbath rest as a gift. You are to balance work and leisure. Prioritise self-care, embracing flexibility in your schedules. Use rest to refocus on God's presence, especially on Sundays. Jesus' lordship frees us from guilt and legalism, allowing us to delight in rest. You will experience renewal, rejuvenation, and a deeper connection with God by embracing this. This teaching, if adhered to, will transform your understanding of rest, empowering you to live life fully.

REJOICE AND BE GLAD

Memory Verse: "They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will rejoice in the bounty of the Lord." Jeremiah 31:12a, NIV

Text: Jeremiah 31:10-14

Jeremiah 31:10-14 NIV
[10] “Hear the word of the Lord, you nations; proclaim it in distant coastlands: ‘He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.’

[11] For the Lord will deliver Jacob and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.

[12] They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will rejoice in the bounty of the Lord— the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil, the young of the flocks and herds. They will be like a well-watered garden, and they will sorrow no more.

[13] Then young women will dance and be glad, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.

[14] I will satisfy the priests with abundance, and my people will be filled with my bounty,” declares the Lord.

Mary Elizabeth Servoss wrote a beautiful and evergreen hymn titled "Be Glad and Rejoice." The lyrics of the first stanza and the chorus read: "Be glad and rejoice in the Lord, all ye that are upright in heart; and ye that have made Him your choice, bid sadness and sorrow depart. Rejoice, rejoice, be glad in the Lord and rejoice; rejoice, rejoice, be glad in the Lord and rejoice."

Just as Mary's hymn invites us to rejoice, God assured the Israelites that they would rejoice after years of sorrow in captivity. The plan to restore and redeem the nation of Israel from the territories of their enemies would elicit joy and gladness. God also promised to give them victory, protection, and abundance. He said He would turn their mourning to gladness and sorrow to joy. They will be fully restored and become fruitful again.

God's plan for us through our salvation in Christ is joy and constant victory. In salvation, God restores all that we have lost due to our sinfulness and fills us with the joy of salvation. Have you strayed away from the Lord? God is committed to restoring you and giving you joy. Therefore, repent and commit to living right. God's joy will fill your soul.

Mrs. Dorcas had lived her life with her husband, struggling to raise their children to become great in life, but things were not happening as expected. She lost one of them to breast cancer, and she was devastated because she was there with her daughter at the hospital during the crisis. However, God restored her joy when she began to see promotions and miraculous things happen in the lives of the other children a few years later. She rejoiced with exceeding great joy for God's mercy.

God's promise of restoration shines brightly in today's text. He vows to gather His scattered people, returning them from captivity and turning their mourning into dancing. With compassion, He provides abundance, declaring, "The Lord will give them plenty of grain and wine." God's delight is evident as both young men and women will rejoice in dancing. This passage highlights God's commitment to restoring His people's joy, prosperity, and relationship with Him. God transforms sorrow into celebration through His faithfulness, demonstrating His unwavering love and care for those who trust in Him.

As you bask in God's promise of restoration, you are to embrace joyful living. Recognise that true joy flows from God's presence in your life. Be reminded that serving others brings joy, but you must balance it with personal renewal. Believers are to rest in God's promise to bring restoration in all situations. Applying these principles allows you to live a life filled with God's joy and delight.

A TIME FOR FEASTING AND JOY

Memory Verse: "The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. But wisdom is proved right by her deeds." Matthew 11:19, NIV

Text: Matthew 11:7-11, 16-19

Matthew 11:7-11, 16-19 NIV
[7] As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

[8] If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.

[9] Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

[10] This is the one about whom it is written: “ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’

[11] Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

[16] “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

[17] “ ‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’

[18] For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’

[19] The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

________________________________
In the Early Church, believers gathered together to fellowship, break bread, and also pray as a family. Following this pattern, John Wesley instructed the Methodists to hold a love feast twice a year. Feasting has always been a part of Christian gatherings.

In today's text, Jesus confirms the authenticity of John's ministry as a forerunner of the Messiah. He honoured John openly so that all could hear and commended him as a great prophet who lived a life of simplicity despite his influence. Jesus was accused of being gluttonous because He ate and drank in the house of tax collectors who invited Him for a feast, comparing Him with John who lived a life of fasting. He rebuked the people of His generation as people who cannot be pleased. They condemned both John's fasting and His feasting. He concluded by saying that people's actions prove whether they are wise or not. God does not forbid us from eating and drinking as His children, including participating in feasts. What God detests is greed.

As God's children, we must remember that there is time for everything: a time to eat and a time to refrain from food. Food is meant to provide strength. When we cross the boundary from eating for strength to eating solely for pleasure, then we are not wise. Therefore, in your eating, be wise and let God be glorified.

Insight: Feasts should be for the strength and nourishment of the body.

Derrick Jensen said," If we celebrate life with all its contradictions, embrace, experience, and ultimately live with it, a chance exists for a spiritual life filled not only with pain and untidiness, but also with joy, community, and creativity." Joy comes from within, is amplified when shared, and can be found by practising gratitude and focusing on the present moment.

In today's text, Jesus invites us to recognise that life is not a series of obligations but a time for rejoicing and connection. Jesus contrasts the solemnity of the prophets with the joyful message He brings. He highlights the joy of His followers, who embrace celebration over sorrow, much like the joyful bridegroom at a wedding feast. Jesus further critiques the rigid expectations of the Pharisees, who fail to understand the spirit of joy inherent in His message. Instead, He embodies the idea that true spirituality is not solely about fasting and sacrifices but also includes moments of feasting and merriment This is the heart of the Christian view of recreation; it is a divine invitation to experience joy, connection, and fullness of life in Christ. As you embrace this truth, you are to intentionally create space for feasting and joyful merriment in your journey in life. Whether through shared meals, communal gatherings, or simply cherishing moments of joy, you reflect God's character. Embrace the invitation to celebrate, which is a vital part of your faith journey.

ALL RELIGIOUS WORK AND NO PLAY

Memory Verse: "Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules?" Colossians 2:20, NIV

Text: Colossians 2:16-23

Colossians 2:16-23 NIV
[16] Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration, or a Sabbath day.

[17] These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

[18] Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.

[19] They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.

[20] Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules:

[21] “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”?

[22] These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings.

[23] Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility, and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.

________________________________
Bill Graham wrote, "Religion is not a set of rules or traditions of men, but the new life in Christ, by which a man is freed from the bo***ge of sin and made a partaker of the divine nature."

Our text reveals that some Colossian believers were being persuaded to return to certain Old Testament religious rituals after experiencing salvation in Christ. Apostle Paul, however, wrote to remind them of their freedom in Christ, who had paid the ultimate sacrifice and abolished all rituals related to the works of the law. He reiterated that all believers have been freed to follow Jesus rather than rules made by men. Therefore, they are not bound to religious work but to Christ Himself. Churches today have embraced many religious practices without paying attention to their fellowship with God. While there is nothing wrong with these religious practices, God is more concerned about our spiritual commitment to Him.

The life of believers in Christ is not merely based on keeping rituals.

Christians are in a relationship with Jesus, who is the Head and controls the affairs of the body. The way of Christ is the only way that pleases God and can give us true and lasting pleasure. Therefore, every Christian must forsake religious work and focus on pleasing Christ. Examine your lifestyle for every religious work and take pleasure in the freedom you now have in Christ.

Insight: Religious work without a relationship with Christ is unacceptable to God.

Legalism can be defined as a strict adherence to the law as it relates to faith. Specifically, legalists believe that performance is the way to gain favour with God. Legalism is the human attempt to gain salvation or prove our spirituality by outward conformity to a list of religious instructions.

It is often disguised in Christian terms and behaviour.

Christian growth can be stunted due to legalism.

Paul cautions the Colossian church against allowing anyone to judge them based on dietary restrictions, festivals, and Sabbath observance. He warned them against letting rules and rituals overshadow the grace of Christ. He notes that while religious disciplines like fasting, feasting, and observing special days can be beneficial, they mean nothing when faith in Christ is not their inspiration. They are all shadows, and the reality is found only in Christ. Since believers have died with Christ, they must not live again like those under the control of the spiritual forces of this world by submitting to its rules. Therefore, true freedom and fulfilment come from following Christ, not from rigid rules.

As Christians, you are to understand that spiritual discipline like fasting and observing special days like the Sabbath, is good only when Christ is the inspiration, not a selfish attempt to create an impression. Remember that you have died with Christ on the cross, and the life you live now is a life of absolute dependence on Him, not rules and regulations that can only result in mechanical Christianity without genuine daily encounters and a walk with God.

[1] The word of the Lord Almighty came to me.

[2] This is what the Lord Almighty says: “I am very jealous for Zion; I am burning with jealousy for her.”

[3] This is what the Lord says: “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the Faithful City, and the mountain of the Lord Almighty will be called the Holy Mountain.”

[4] This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each of them with cane in hand because of their age.

At the 1995 launch of the Children's Fund, Nelson Mandela commented, "There is no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children."

Children are blessings from God to their parents. The sight of children playing in public is one of the signs that all is well in a community. In times of war or crisis, children are often unable to play in public. In the book of Zechariah, when God promised to bless Jerusalem, one of the things He said they would enjoy is that the city's streets would be filled with playing children. The blessing of children brings joy and gladness to families and communities.

Children bring joy to the hearts of their parents and anyone who spends time watching them. Remember to rejoice in God's grace at work wherever you see children playing. Are you trusting God for the blessings of children? Wait on Him, for He will surely do as He has promised. His grace will manifest in your life.
