UNITY AND LOVE AMONGST BRETHREN IN THE CHURCH
One of the greatest gifts God gave to the church is not just a building or a program, it is each other. The church was never designed to be a gathering of strangers who meet on Sunday and forget each other on Monday. It was designed to be a family.
Psalm 133:1 says, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Notice, God did not just say it is good, He said it is pleasant. Unity is beautiful to God and enjoyable to man.
What is unity? Unity is not uniformity. It does not mean we all think the same way, dress the same way, or like the same things. Unity means we have different gifts, different backgrounds, and different personalities, but we have one heart, one purpose, and one Spirit. Just like the body has many parts but one body.
And what holds that unity together? Love.
You cannot have real unity without love. You can have organization without love, you can have meetings without love, but you cannot have true unity without love. Love is the glue.
Jesus said in John 13:35, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." He did not say people will know us by our powerful preaching, our beautiful choir, or our big auditorium. He said they will know us by our love for one another. Love is our true identity as a church.
What does this love look like in practice?
*1. It forgives quickly.*
In a family, offence must come. Someone will step on your toes, someone will not greet you well, someone will misunderstand you. Love does not keep a record of wrongs. Ephesians 4:32 says forgive one another even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you. A church that does not forgive cannot grow.
*2. It serves willingly.*
Love does not ask, "What can I get?" It asks, "What can I give?" Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. In the church, we wash each other's feet when we serve without being forced, when we help clean up, when we pray for a brother, when we check on a sister who missed service.
*3. It covers and protects.*
Love does not expose the weakness of a brother in the WhatsApp group. Love covers. Proverbs says love covers a multitude of sins. If you hear gossip about a fellow member, love will not spread it, love will kill it.
*4. It celebrates genuinely.*
We must learn to rejoice with those who rejoice. When your brother is promoted, celebrate him. When your sister gets married, rejoice with her. Jealousy has killed many churches, but love celebrates.
Why is this so important? Because where there is unity, God commands a blessing. Psalm 133:3 says, "There the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore." Unity is an attractor of God's presence and power. The early church in Acts 2 had all things in common and continued in one accord, and God added to them daily.
A divided church cannot fight the enemy. When we fight each other, we have no strength left to fight the devil. But when we stand together in love, we become unshakable.
So let us make a decision today. Let us choose love over offence. Let us choose unity over personal interest. Let us be the church that the world will look at and say, "See how they love one another."
Because at the end of the day, we are not just members of the same church. We are brethren.
