Families in Afghanistan are reportedly selling their children, mostly young girls, to buy food, according to several reports. Some of the girls will become laborers and others may be child brides, the report says.

Afghanistan continues to face the world’s largest humanitarian crisis – 18.8 million Afghans were unable to feed themselves every day and that number is set to rise to 23 million before the end of the year. At least nine million are close to starvation and at least one million children under five face severe acute malnutrition.

The situation has led many families to take up desperate measures. UNICEF has reported that 28% of Afghan women aged 15 to 49 years were married before the age of 18.

The Taliban says they have repeatedly requested that West unblocks access to their nation’s funds so much-needed humanitarian aid can be distributed. Others say the growing poverty is partially the Taliban’s responsibility.

Recently women were banned from working in many sectors, contributing to poverty across many regions where women helped their families survive by working jobs.
