GROW IN LOVE FOR GOD

BH 292: More Love to Thee, O Lord

RBT: Exodus 14-16

Memory Verse: Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. Deuteronomy 7:9, NIV

Text: Deuteronomy 7:7-11

Deuteronomy 7:7-11 NIV
[7] The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples.

[8] But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

[9] Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

[10] But those who hate him he will repay to their face by destruction; he will not be slow to repay to their face those who hate him.

[11] Therefore, take care to follow the commands, decrees, and laws I give you today.

Joseph Whelan, S. J. wrote, "Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the mornings, what you will do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude. Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything."

Moses reminds the Israelites of God's love and faithfulness to them. In love, the Lord chose Israel, not because they were more numerous than other nations. God kept the oath which He swore to Israel's forefathers, making it clear that Israel was not being asked to destroy nations because they were superior, but because of their covenant relationship with Him. God built His people with His power, not the power of numbers or even men's wisdom. The Israelites, therefore, are to love God and keep His commandments.

Even in our day, God continues to choose and use people that we would least expect. Therefore, we must serve Him with all our hearts and with all our souls. The love we have for Him is in appreciation of His affection for us. He chose us, despite who we were. Therefore, show your love to God by obeying His commands. Submit your plan and will, totally to Him. As Christians, we should carry out our service to God and others out of genuine love. As you spend time reading the Word of God and praying to Him, your love for Him will also grow.

Bound to Him eternaly by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s Sword, Standing on the promises of God.

*Memory verse:* 'But Samuel replied: 'Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams" 1 Samuel 15:22, NIV

*Text: 1 Samuel 15: 20-26*

[20] “But I did obey the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king.

[21] The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”

[22] But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

[23] For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has rejected you as king.”

[24] Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the men and so I gave in to them.

[25] Now I beg you, forgive my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.”

[26] But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”
_______

Chuck Swindoll tells about his encounter with General Charles M. Duke, a former astronaut 'who went on the Apollo 16 mission to the moon.

I asked, "Once you were there, weren't you free to make your own decisions and carry out your own experiments?" He smiled and said, “sure, if didn't want to return to earth!"

He went on to describe the intricate plan, the precise instructions, the essential discipline, and the instant obedience that was needed right down to the second.

He explained how they landed with sixty seconds of fuel remaining. Chuck said, I got the distinct impression that a rebel doesn't fit inside a space suit."

God instructed Saul through prophet Samuel to destroy the Amalekites, but Saul decided to preserve the king and some animals.

God sent prophet Samuel back to king Saul to declare judgement upon him for his act of disobedience and rebellion.

Samuel told Saul that God value obedience over sacrifice. He then told Saul that because he rejected the instructions of God, God has also rejected him as king over His people.

By this act of disobedience, Saul lost God's support, presence and blessings. He also lost the kingdom of Israel.

Today, many Christians increase their offering and seed, while disobeying God's command. God will not overlook disobedience because we give unwarranted sacrifices.

God seeks those who will obey Him implicitly, not those who bring expensive sacrifices to atone for deliberate disobedience.

God demands complete, not partial, obedience to His Word. Believers must take God's words as sacred, and know that its rejection amounts to resisting God.

Always remember that God values your obedience more than your gifts. The best gift you can give to God is obeying all the words He has spoken to you. To obey God is better than any sacrifice you can give to Him.

*Perceive:* Obedience to God's words or message saves from eternal condemnation.

*Ponder:* How obedient are you to God's instructions?

*Practise:* Ask for a receptive heart to God's instructions and voice.

*Pray:* Father, give me an obedient spirit, help me to obey Your command.

*Prayer:* Lord, because I love Your law, I will have great peace, and nothing shall by any means cause me to stumble.

*Pray for these ordained ministers and members of their churches:* Oladapo Abel, Ogbomoso; Odunayo A. GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE

Hymn - BH 41: To God Be the Glory

RBT: Matthew 7-9

Memory Verse: Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our 'God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:28-29, NIV

Text: Hebrews 12:18-29

Hebrews 12:18-29 NIV
[18] You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom, and storm;

[19] to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them,

[20] because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.”

[21] The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”

[22] But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,

[23] to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

[24] to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

[25] See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?

[26] At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”

[27] The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.

[28] Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,

[29] for our “God is a consuming fire.”

_________________________
The Old and New Testaments can be represented with two significant mountains in the Scripture namely, Mount Sinai and Mount Zion, respectively (v. 18). Mount Sinai is associated with the terrifying fear of an untouchable mountain, where the law was given to Moses, with restricted access to God. However, on Mount Zion, God is accessible to everyone through Christ, who is the Mediator of the new covenant.

According to today's passage, the faithful people of God no longer define their relationship with God primarily on the Mosaic law but on their relationship with Jesus Christ. The blessing associated with the access Christians have in Christ comes with responsibility; hence, the warning about the danger of taking the grace of God for granted. In the Old Testament, the giving of the law at Sinai took place with the awesome demonstration of God's power. The descriptive phrase 'God is a consuming Fire' refers to God's holy jealousy, anger, and judgment. It is a warning for those who depart from His righteous ways. (vv. 25-29). Those who disobey God's commandments will deprive themselves of entering the Promised Land and will face His judgment.

Since you expect a kingdom that cannot be shaken and that is devoid of evil practices, then you must worship God acceptably with reverence and awe. Every true worshipper of God is expected to always listen to God and heed His warning to avoid God's punishment.

How much of God's instructions have you yielded to? Be deliberate about obeying God's instructions today.

THE PIERCING WORD OF GOD

Hymn - BH 132: All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name

RBT: Zechariah 11-14

Memory Verse: "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrows; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." Hebrews 4:12, NIV

Text: Hebrews 4:12-16

Hebrews 4:12-16 NIV
[12] For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

[13] Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

[14] Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

[15] For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.

[16] Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

_________________________
Charles Spurgeon wrote in his articles, "There is a style of majesty about God's word, and with this majesty a vividness never found elsewhere. No other writing has within it a heavenly life whereby it works miracles, and even imparts life to its readers. It is a living and incorruptible seed. It moves, it stirs itself, it lives, it communes with living men as a Living Word."

The passage today shows the Word of God as the power of God to change lives from the inside out. It has the power to make people live right for God. The Word of God is a spiritual instrument that is capable of bringing about lasting change. When one encounters the Word of God, it can expose private and hidden sins. The Word of God exposes the wrongs of the past that one may want to cover up. The activeness of the Word of God reveals the limitations of human strength. This makes it possible for sinners, to confess their sins and completely surrender their lives to the lordship of Christ.

What makes the Word of God inactive is living in sin. Indeed, sin renders the power in the Word of God ineffective in the life of a child of God, while the Word of God empowers the child of God to live a life that is void of sin. The Word of God has the power to liberate anyone who believes and accepts it by faith. That is why Satan and his agents will do all within their power to ensure that believers are not feeding on the Word of God so that such a person can remain in the bo***ge of sin and end in ruin and destruction. Spending time in God's Word leads to liberation from the bo***ge of sin and gives us the fortification needed to abound in every good work. Therefore, make a conscious effort to continuously feed on the Word of God.

Perceive: Your attitude to the Word of God speaks volumes of your Christian life.

Ponder: Have you discovered the power in the Word of God?

Practice: Resolve today to allow the Word of God to become alive and active in your daily walk with God.

*Memory verse:* "He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and followed the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left. "2 Chronicles 34:2 NIV

*Text: 2 Chronicles 34:1-7* [1] Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years.

[2] He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and followed the ways of his father David, not turning aside to the right or to the left.

[3] In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his father David. In his twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of high places, Asherah poles and idols.

[4] Under his direction the altars of the Baals were torn down; he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them, and smashed the Asherah poles and the idols. These he broke to pieces and scattered over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.

[5] He burned the bones of the priests on their altars, and so he purged Judah and Jerusalem.

[6] In the towns of Manasseh, Ephraim and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and in the ruins around them,

[7] he tore down the altars and the Asherah poles and crushed the idols to powder and cut to pieces all the incense altars throughout Israel. Then he went back to Jerusalem.

_______

John Piper wrote in his book entitled Think, "When you are deeply peaceful and confident that, because kingdom and be the all-satisfying.

Treasure of your life forever, then you are free to see the truth, and love the truth, and speak the truth no matter what, and joyfully spread a passion for the truth whose name is Jesus."

In our text, Josiah, at the age of eight years, becomes the king of Judah. At age sixteen, "he began to seek after the God of David, his father."

At the age of twenty, Josiah began to purge Judah of its idols. He hated the spiritual condition of Judah, who had fallen deep into sin.

Judah had become a pagan nation. Josiah destroyed not only the idols, but he also killed the priests who sacrificed to these idols.

The reason Josiah did these things was his passion for God's laws. Because of this passion, he was willing to please God, not minding his young age. Today, we need to have our land purged of its idols.

We need to get rid of those things taking the place of God in our lives. We must be godly and be consistent. We must care about the things of God so that we can make a difference in our spheres of influence.

What is your response to the ungodly practices in our society today? Unless one has a passion for the laws of God, as contained in the Scripture, it might be difficult to escape the antics of Satan.

Do whatever you can to stand for and speak the truth at all times. Let no one intimidate you. God will preserve those who walk in His will.

*Perceive:* Passion for God's law must reflect in obedience to those laws.

*Ponder:* How well are you using the Word of God to counteract the antics of Satan today?

*Practise:* Resolve, starting from today, to read the Word of God more regularly.

*Pray:* Lord, create in me a passion for Your Word.

*THE SUFFERING SERVANT*

*BH 93: The Old Rugged Cross*

1. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffering and shame.
And I love that old cross where the
dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross.
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross.
And exchange it some lay for a crown.

2. Oh that old rugged cross so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear lamb of God left His glory above.
To bear it to dark Calvary

3. In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see;
For ‘twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify me.

4. To the old rugged cross I will ever be true.
Its shame and reproached gladly bear.
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away
Where His glory forever I’ll share

*Memory verse:* "He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces, he was despised, and we held him in low esteem" Isaiah 53:3, NIV

*Text: Isaiah 53:1-7*

[1] Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

[2] He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

[3] He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

[4] Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.

[5] But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

[6] We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

[7] He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

________

Paul Chappell once said, "Often, we endure trials seeking God's deliverance from them. Suffering is painful for us to endure or to see those we love endure. While our instinct is to flee trials, remember that even in the midst of suffering, God's will is being done."

Isaiah describes the coming Servant of the Lord who will come in the time of spiritual destitution and bring peace, joy, salvation, and redemption. But the people will reject Him because of the meanness of His outward circumstances and the want of attractiveness in Him. He will be treated with contempt. The ill treatment of the Servant was pathetic since it was the griefs and sorrows of others He bore. He was wounded and bruised for the sins of others, so that they might have healing. Yet, He took and bore all patiently, like a lamb to the slaughter. The passage points to Jesus, whom people rejected because there is nothing impressive about Him.

This passage pictures Jesus Christ's appearance in human form and His journey to the cross. It explains how Jesus Christ would be despised and rejected by humanity, as well as His suffering. He carried our sorrows and was crucified on the cross for our iniquities. We should understand that all that Jesus suffered was not for His sins but for ours. Jesus came to take away our pains, our weaknesses, and illnesses. Whatever challenges you are going through, you can trust God to redeem you for His glory.

*Perceive:* Christ suffering brings strength and hope to the weary soul.

*Ponder:* Do you know that the peace we enjoy today came from the suffering of Jesus Christ?

*Practise:* Take some time to reflect on Christ's suffering today.

*Pray:* Lord, help me to live daily with the consciousness that Jesus suffered for me.

*Prayer:* Lord, may no adversary be able to stand against my plan in Jesus' name.
