*REFLECTING ON SURAH AL-FATIHA – THE ESSENCE OF THE QURAN*
Alhamdulillah! As we journey through this blessed month of Ramadan, today we turn our attention to Surah Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran and its great essence. Known as Ummul Kitab (the Mother of the Book), this Surah encapsulates the core message of the Quran and serves as a spiritual anchor for every believer.
In Surah Al-Hijr (15:87), Allah says:
*وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَیۡنَـٰكَ سَبۡعࣰا مِّنَ ٱلۡمَثَانِی وَٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ ٱلۡعَظِیمَ*
*"And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], the seven oft-repeated verses and the great Quran."*
This verse highlights the significance of Surah Al-Fatiha, which is described as the "seven oft-repeated verses." It is a Surah recited in every Raka'ah of Prayer, making it a constant companion in our daily worship.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنۡ لَمۡ یَقۡرَأۡ بِفَاتِحَةِ ٱلۡكِتَابِ
*"There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (Surah Al-Fatiha)." (Sahih Bukhari)*
This hadith underlines the centrality of Surah Al-Fatiha in our Prayer. It is not merely a recitation but a conversation with Allah, where we praise Him, seek His guidance, and ask for His mercy.
Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) said:
*"While Jibril (Gabriel) was sitting with the Prophet (ﷺ), he heard a sound above him and raised his head. He said, ‘This is a gate in the heaven which has been opened today, and it has never been opened before. An angel has descended through it.’ The angel said, ‘Receive the glad tidings of two lights which have been given to you and no Prophet before you: the Opening of the Book (Surah Al-Fatiha) and the concluding verses of Surah Al-Baqarah. You will never recite a letter of them without being granted its reward.’"*
This narration highlights the unique status of Surah Al-Fatiha as a divine gift to the Ummah. It is a source of immense reward and a means of connecting with Allah.
