HOW TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION PROPERLY (STEP BY STEP)
โ€œThe Eucharist is not ordinary bread, so we should never approach it casually.โ€

For Catholics, Holy Communion is not merely a symbol or ritual. The Church teaches that the Eucharist is truly the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1374).

That is why receiving Holy Communion is one of the most sacred moments in the life of a Catholic.

Yet many people were never properly taught:
* how to approach
* how to receive
* and how to prepare themselves spiritually
As a result, some receive casually, distractedly, or without understanding the reverence required.

But Holy Communion deserves more than routine.
It deserves awareness, preparation, and reverence.

We are not merely receiving something, we are receiving Someone.

1. PREPARE YOUR HEART BEFORE MASS
Receiving Holy Communion properly begins long before the Communion line.

A Catholic should come to Mass prayerfully and with a clean conscience. The Church teaches that anyone conscious of grave (mortal) sin should first receive the Sacrament of Confession before approaching Holy Communion (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1385).

The faithful are also expected to observe the Eucharistic fast, normally refraining from food and drink for at least one hour before Communion (cf. Code of Canon Law).

Preparation matters because the Eucharist is sacred.
The soul should be ready for the One it is about to receive.

2. APPROACH THE ALTAR WITH REVERENCE
When it is time for Communion, approach calmly and prayerfully.

Avoid rushing, chatting, looking around unnecessarily, or treating the procession casually. The Communion procession is an act of worship, not merely movement.

As you approach the minister, make a sign of reverence before receiving. In many places, this is done with a bow of the head (cf. General Instruction of the Roman Missal).

Even the way we walk toward the Eucharist should reflect faith.

3. HOW TO RECEIVE THE HOST
The Church permits receiving Holy Communion either:
* on the tongue
* or in the hand (where approved by the bishopsโ€™ conference)

If receiving in the hand:
* place one hand over the other respectfully
* receive the Host carefully
* consume it immediately before moving away

If receiving on the tongue:
* open the mouth respectfully
* extend the tongue slightly
* remain still while the minister places the Host

Before receiving, the minister says:
โ€œThe Body of Christ.โ€

The communicant responds clearly:
โ€œAmen.โ€

This โ€œAmenโ€ is not a routine response, it is a declaration of faith in the Real Presence of Christ.
That small word carries great meaning.

4. RECEIVE WITH ATTENTION AND CARE
The Eucharist should never be handled carelessly.

The faithful should ensure that no fragment of the Host is deliberately neglected or treated irreverently. One should also avoid walking away while still holding the Host.

Holy Communion is not ordinary food.
It is sacred.

The Church teaches that Christ is fully present even in the smallest Eucharistic particle (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1377).

Reverence is not exaggeration, it is recognition.

5. AFTER RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION
After receiving Communion, return prayerfully to your place.
This is not the moment for distraction or conversation. It is a privileged time for thanksgiving, silence, and personal prayer.

Many saints encouraged Catholics to speak to Jesus interiorly after Communion:
* thanking Him
* offering intentions
* seeking grace and strength
The One you prayed to, is now sacramentally present within you.

Do not rush away from a sacred encounter.

6. COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID
Many abuses or mistakes happen not from malice, but from lack of formation.

Some common things to avoid include:
* receiving without proper disposition
* chewing gum during Communion
* walking away without consuming the Host
* treating the Eucharist casually
* approaching without reverence
The goal is not fear, but awareness of the greatness of the sacrament.

IN SUMMARY: RECEIVE WITH FAITH AND REVERENCE
Holy Communion is one of the greatest gifts Christ gave His Church.

To receive properly means:
* preparing the soul
* approaching reverently
* receiving attentively
* and responding with faith
The Eucharist is not ordinary.
And when we truly understand Who we are receivingโ€ฆ our attitude changes.

Today, reflect:
Do I receive Holy Communion with routine or with deep awareness of Christโ€™s presence?

โ€œThe way we receive the Eucharist reveals how deeply we believe in it.โ€

If this helped you understand better, circulate it and tell us: what part of receiving Holy Communion do many Catholics overlook today?

MAY DEVOTION TOPIC FOR TUESDAY 12TH MAY, 2026

PRAYING FOR THE DEAD

Praying for the dead is believed and practiced across many religions. We Catholics pray for the dead based on two main doctrines:
1. The Communion of the Saints.
2. Purgatory

COMMUNION OF THE SAINTS

The whole body of Christians are divided into three parts namely:
A. Church Triumphant - These are the Saints in Heaven
B. Church Suffering- These are the souls in Purgatory.
C. Church Militant - These are the faithful on Earth.

The Communion of Saints means all members of the Church, in Heaven, on Earth, and in Purgatory are in Communion with each other as being one body in Jesus Christ.(Penny Catechism)

PURGATORY
This is a place where souls suffer for a time after death on account of their sins. Souls that depart this life in venial sin or have not fully paid the debt of temporal punishment ( punishment that has no end), go to purgatory in order to be purified. Because, nothing unclean shall enter Heaven. Rev 21:27.

Catholics offer prayers, Masses, alms giving etc. for the dead.
PRAYING FOR THE DEAD IN SCRIPTURE

After battle, Judas Maccabeus finds amulets on dead soldiers and takes up a collection to send to Jerusalem for a sin offering. 2 Macc 12:46 - 'It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.'
St Paul prayed for Onesiphorus who seemed to be deducted. 2 Tim 1:16-18, 'May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus...

- Praying for the dead is a spiritual work of mercy.
- The Church prays for the dead at every Eucharistic sacrifice.
- The Church set aside November, 2 as 'All Saints Day'.
- St Augustine of Hippo 4th/5th Century - 'The universal Church observes this Law, handed down from the Father's, that prayers should be offered and those who have died in the Communion of the body and blood of Christ when they are commemorating in their proper place at the Sacrifice'
- Pope Benedict the 16th in his encyclical 'Spe Salvi' (2007) paragraph 46-48 points out that :
- a. Most people need purification- 'A great majority of people die needing cleansing so they go to purgatory.
- b. Our prayers help - Because of the Communion of the Saints, our prayers can actually help those in purgatory, in their purification.
- c. No one is saved alone. No one sins alone. It is never too late to touch the heart of another, not is it ever in vain.
- d. It changes the question we ask - Instead of only ' How can I save myself? We should ask 'What can I do in order that others may be saved'

Maria Faustina saw a sister from her order appear to her three times and described purgatory and sought her prayers.
- 1st Visit- Terrible condition, all in flames with her face terribly distorted.( There's no certainty that there's fire in purgatory though)
- 2nd Visit- Even worse, saying faustina's prayer and community prayer had helped other souls not her.
- 3rd Visit - Her face was radiant, her eyes beaming with joy, she said Faustina's prayer had helped and she would not remain in purgatory much longer.

QUESTIONS
1. Do you believe in Communion of the Saints?
2. Do you think purgatory is real?
3. Do you think there's need for purgatory?( If there are challenges I answering the questions, come along with the questions for devotion tomorrow).
MEDITATION AND PRAYER
Ask God to strengthen your faith in Him, to give you more Grace to serve Him. Let's have a minute silence for all faithful departed. May the souls of the faithful departed....
