HISTORY OF THE TIJANIYYAH MUSLIM STUDENTS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (TIMSAN):

"Knowledge is the foundation of identity."

Many members know TIMSAN today, but only a few know how it began. To promote awareness and preserve our history, below is the history of the Tijaniyyah Muslim Students Association of Nigeria (TIMSAN) as contained in the association's official documents.

HISTORY

The Tijaniyyah Muslim Students’ Association of Nigeria (TIMSAN) is a platform for Muslim students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria who adhere to the Tariqah Tijaniyyah. TIMSAN was incorporated in 2011 by the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria. Its establishment was due to the need to bring together Tijaniyyah adherents on campuses to identify and strengthen our brotherhood, as well as provide opportunities to continue our congregational litanies on campus alongside other similar activities.

This brought together some of our mentors, including Sheikh Suleiman, Sheikh Abdullah Okene, Barr. Suleiman Dawud, Muqadam Adnan Adeyemi, Dr. Tijani Sh*ttu, and others, regardless of their individual Zawiyyahs, to establish what is now known as TIMSAN.

Previously, there were several associations across the country with Sufi doctrines and ideologies such as Muslim Sufi Movement (MSM), ATSAN, TIFSON, FAMSA, etc., on various campuses. However, at the 2012 International Organization of Tijaniyyah Brotherhood (IOTB)—a body established by Imam Hassan Cisse—annual conference, all the associations agreed to adopt the name TIMSAN, while IOTB would serve as the graduate and mother body of TIMSAN.

Since adopting the name TIMSAN, the association has expanded to several tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Presently, TIMSAN is structured into Zones, States, and Local Zawiyyahs (corresponding to the respective institutions).

MISSION:

To revive and maintain Islamic virtues among Muslim students and encourage intellectual and religious development through the promotion of love for the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (SAW), together with the traditional and spiritual teachings of the Qur'an and Hadith.

To reorient the public, especially the Tijaniyyun, on the authentic ideology and doctrine of pristine Sufism (Tasawwuf), particularly the Tijaniyyah, against the negative image portrayed by some pseudo-Sufis.

VISION:

To uphold the pristine practices of our Beloved Master (SAW) and to unleash the hidden leadership traits and potentials of our members.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES:

1. To provide a special forum to educate the Muslim Ummah on the love of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), his household, his companions, the saintly servants of Allah, and all Muslims in general.

2. To educate our members and students in general in Islam and the Tariqah Tijaniyyah through lectures, seminars, symposia, publications, and discussions.

3. To promote mutual understanding, cooperation, and tolerance among the diverse tribes, beliefs, and ideals of Nigeria.

4. To observe the fundamental principles of the Tijaniyyah Brotherhood in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

5. To uplift members towards attaining spiritual purity.

6. To strengthen friendship and companionship among followers of the Tijaniyyah.

7. To promote love and affection for the Holy Prophet (SAW), his companions, and the Awliya'ullah.

8. To pursue educational objectives in Shari'ah, Sufiyyah, Ma'arifah, and other fields of study.

9. To imbibe and display good moral character.

10. To provide avenues for smooth academic progress among members.

PRESS STATEMENT

In the name of Allah, the most beneficent, the most merciful.

The National Leadership of the Tijjaniyyah Muslim Students’ Association of Nigeria (TIMSAN) has observed with deep concern the growing trend of religious exclusion, discrimination, and denial of legitimate rights experienced by Tijjaniyyah Muslim students in several tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The recent developments at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, have once again brought this unfortunate reality to national attention.

TIMSAN wishes to state unequivocally that the demand for a mosque or dedicated worship space for Tijjaniyyah students as demonstrated by its ATBU chapter and other higher institution in the country is not born out of a desire to divide the Muslim community or establish parallel religious structures as portrayed by the public. Rather, it is a peaceful response to years of persistent denial of access to university mosques for our lawful religious activities.

Across many institutions, the Tijjaniyyah students have repeatedly been prevented from organizing their religious activities in campus mosques by individuals and groups who claim exclusive control over these facilities. Consequently, seeking an alternative place of worship has become the most peaceful, responsible, and sustainable solution. It is far better to provide a designated space where students can worship peacefully than to create unnecessary tension over access to facilities that ought to serve every Muslim.
The university is a community that accommodates people from diverse religious backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, and Islamic traditions. The responsibility of every university management is to administer its affairs with fairness, impartiality, and justice to all members of that community. No recognized student body should suffer discrimination because of its religious orientation which doesn’t go against The institutional and National Constitution and Code of conducts.

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), is unambiguous on this matter. Section 38(1) guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, including the freedom to manifest and practice that religion in worship, teaching, practice, and observance. Section 40 further guarantees every citizen the right to freely assemble and associate with others for lawful purposes. These constitutional rights do not cease within the walls of our tertiary institutions.

TIMSAN therefore calls on the National Leadership of the Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria (MSSN) to rise above ideological differences and provide leadership that promotes unity, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence among all Muslim students. No organization should encourage or tolerate the exclusion of fellow Muslims from common facilities or deny them the opportunity to practice their faith peacefully.

We equally call on the managements of all Nigerian tertiary institutions to remain impartial and uphold the constitutional rights of every student. Where it becomes impossible for different Muslim groups to share facilities peacefully, university authorities should not hesitate to provide alternative spaces that guarantee every group the freedom to worship and organize lawful religious activities without intimidation, interference, or discrimination.

Furthermore, we urge the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant regulatory bodies to develop clear policies that safeguard freedom of religion and association within tertiary institutions and ensure that no student organization is subjected to discrimination under any guise.

TIMSAN remains committed to peace, dialogue, and the unity of the Muslim Ummah. We reject violence, hostility, and religious intolerance in all its forms. Our position is simple: where Muslim students are allowed equal access to university mosques without discrimination, there would be no need to seek separate worship spaces. However, where access continues to be unjustly denied, providing dedicated facilities for affected groups remains the most peaceful and practical means of preserving harmony on our campuses.

Justice is the foundation of peace. Every student deserves to study, worship, and associate freely within the framework of the law and without fear of exclusion because of his or her religious affiliation.
