I'll set my eyes on Jesus
Set Your Eyes Upon Jesus!
Have you ever wondered why, if you remove your focus from a particular pain in your body, the pain loses its effect? Ever feel like you can't stop thinking about something? Whether it's a worry, a goal, or even a catchy song, it just keeps replaying in your mind. That's because whatever you set your focus (eyes) on amplifies.
Think of it like a magnifying glass. When you focus sunlight through it, the light becomes concentrated and intense, capable of even starting a fire. Your attention works similarly. It takes whatever you're focusing on and makes it bigger, more powerful, and more influential in your life.
This principle works for both negative and positive things.
You focus on your worries and fears, and they'll grow larger, consuming your thoughts and energy.
You focus on your goals and dreams, and they'll become clearer, motivating you to take action and make them a reality.
Focus on the good in your life, and you'll find yourself feeling more grateful and content.
Focus on the negative, and you risk falling into a cycle of negativity and dissatisfaction.
Focus on Jesus, and you'll become more like Him.
Yes! What you set your eyes on amplifies. It could be in your relationships, businesses, body, character, attitude, etc.
You see, some years back in the university, I stayed off-campus in the senior staff quarters. I would frequently have unwanted visitors (armed boys) break into my room and steal from me at gunpoint. This kept happening, and the school asked that I move out of the quarters. Their reason was that probably I was a cult member, and other cults were trying to retaliate. I grew bitterness in my heart toward thieves. This bitterness led to unforgiveness. From then until I finished my studies, whenever I heard someone shout, "Thief! Thief! Thief!", I would jump up from wherever I wasβbe it in the room, class, a friend's house, or a moving tricycle (Keke)βand pursue the thief. Whenever we happened to catch the thief, I would be among those who really beat him.
This continued even after I finished my studies. While working in a multipurpose cooperative in Jos, one day I was in a tricycle with my boss's wife, Mrs. Manshak. I heard someone scream, "Thief! Thief! Thief!" Everything in me rose up to pursue (remember, we were together in a moving tricycle). She quickly held my legs. That was the beginning of the change.
When I got home, I took a personal examination of my heart. It led me to seeing that I was holding on to the pain those thieves had caused me. My focus had not shifted from that. I was still living in the past; hence, the pain was amplifying.
That day, I decided I was going to let go and fix my eyes upon Jesus to heal me. I forgave them and prayed for them. Gradually, the hurt and unforgiveness began to fade away. Today, it's totally gone, with multiple pieces of evidence of a changed heart.
What about you? Is there something you've set your eyes on that you shouldn't? Is there a change that you strongly desire?
I invite you to focus on Jesus. Focus on Jesus, and the things of this worldβthe pains, the failures, the depressions, that addiction, that trial, that negative cycle, that demonic oppression, that negative testimonyβeveryone of them, whatever it is, will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.
Remember, you have the power to choose where you direct your attention, your focus to.
What will you choose to amplify today?
