We have seen that nothing on earth can alter or mend the human heart, which is the essence of our character; therefore, moral corruption is irreversible. Neither religion, the government, philosophy, tradition, or human wisdom can change it.

Only Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross have the power to transform our hearts. The condition of this transformation, however, is true repentance on our part: “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3:19). Jesus’s work on the cross cleanses us from our moral corruption, but only if we recognize our sins, repent of them, and trust in His sacrifice on our behalf.

His second coming is the primary reason why Jesus commanded His church to keep “watching and praying.” In Mark 13:33, He expressed this urgent need: “Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is.” When the church doesn’t pray, it is telling Jesus it doesn’t want to be united with Him in His second coming; it is revealing that it doesn’t believe this will happen, and that it has chosen to ignore the value of prayer regarding this momentous event.
