MORNING TEA WITH JESUS.
Topic: “That All May Be One”
Text: The Gospel of John 17:21
“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee…” (John 17:21)
Overview on John 17;21
John 17 records the prayer of Jesus before His arrest and crucifixion. This chapter is often called the High Priestly Prayer because Jesus prayed for Himself, His disciples, and all future believers. In verse 21, Jesus prayed specifically for unity among believers.
At this moment, Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure from the world. He knew divisions, persecutions, and challenges would come, so He prayed that His followers would remain united in faith, love, and purpose.
Understanding the passage John 17:21
1. “That they all may be one”
Jesus desired unity among believers. This unity is not merely organizational or denominational; it is spiritual unity rooted in Christ. Believers are called to live in harmony despite differences in tribe, race, language, or background.
2. “As thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee”
Jesus compared believers’ unity with the relationship between Himself and the Father. The Father and the Son are distinct persons yet perfectly united in purpose, love, and will. Christians are expected to reflect this divine unity.
3. “That they also may be one in us”
True unity comes from fellowship with God. When believers remain connected to Christ, unity becomes possible. Division often results when people focus on selfish interests instead of God’s purpose.
4. “That the world may believe that thou hast sent me”
Christian unity is a testimony to the world. When believers love and cooperate with one another, people are drawn to Christ. Disunity weakens the witness of the Church.
What then shall we do?
1. Unity Should Be Pursued in the Church
Believers must avoid jealousy, hatred, gossip, and unnecessary division. The Church should work together in love and peace.
2. Love Is the Foundation of Unity
Unity grows where there is humility, forgiveness, patience, and mutual care among Christians.
3. Christians Must Reflect Christ to the World
Our behavior toward one another can either attract people to Christ or push them away. Unity strengthens evangelism.
4. Denominational Differences Should Not Destroy Fellowship
Though Christians may worship differently, all true believers are one in Christ and should maintain brotherly love.
Relationship with Other Bible Passages
The Epistle to the Ephesians 4:3
Paul encouraged believers to keep “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” This supports Jesus’ prayer for unity.
The First Epistle to the Corinthians 1:10
Paul warned against divisions in the church and urged believers to speak the same thing and remain united.
Psalm 133:1
“Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Unity brings God’s blessing.
Conclusion
Jesus’ prayer in John 17:21 reveals God’s desire for His people to live in unity. Christian unity is built on love, humility, and fellowship with God. When believers remain united, the Church becomes a strong witness to the world, and God is glorified through His people.
