FROM THE CONFERENCE SECRETARY-
PLEASE SHARE FOR FURTHER CLARITY!

This is for information purposes.

The United Methodists around the world should note that no special session was validly held in Nigeria to take votes to leave the United Methodist Church as been shared by the Wesleyan Covenant Association, Good News Magazine, Institute for Religion and Democracy (IRD). The following information is for clarification:

1. The postponed June 1 special session did not take any legal vote to allow any part of the church to leave the UMC talk less of a unanimous votes.

2. The attached call letter for the June 1 special session stated clearly the purpose of the special call session which a dissaffiliation is NOT part of it.

3. BOD paragraph 603.5 states "... A special session of the Annual Conference shall have only such powers as are stated in the call."

4. An Episcopal Area with four annual conferences does not have the power to vote of on leaving the UMC (the WCA, Good News and IRD knows this) only an annual conference can vote to leave under BOD paragraph 572.

5. Therefore, anyone claiming that Nigeria has voted to leave the United Methodist Church is promoting something that is false and illegal.

Thank you.

United Methodist Church Nigeria Episcopal Area held Annual Conference Amidst Centenary Celebration

The United Methodist Church Nigeria Episcopal Area concludes the 2023 Annual Conference Session amidst a robust centenary celebration of the 100 years of mission work that gave birth to the UMC in Nigeria December 1923 – December 2023.

The sessions of the four Annual Conference was held at the United Methodist Church Negatavah, Jalingo November 29th to December 3rd in line with the Grand-Gassam Just Resolutions. About 782 out of 988 duly elected Annual Conference delegates in Nigeria convened at the United Methodist Negatavah for the business of the annual conference.

However the supposed presiding officer Bishop John Wesley Yohanna who has alighned himself with the Global Methodist Church was absent and there was no any written communication from him as regarding the reason for his absence The Conference Secretaries, Rev. Ande I. Emmanuel and Rev. Nuhu Haruna informed the delegates about the bishop’s absence which led Rev. Jesse Ignatius a clergy delegate from Jalingo District to move a motion that the conference continue under the provisions of the Book of Discipline paragraph 603.6 under President pro tempore. This motion was second and the delegates voted by ballot without debate to elected Rev. Alison Idi Karim as president pro tempore.

Rev. Alison Idi Karim, an elder in full connection with the North East Nigeria Annual Conference declares the conference open. In his address to the conference Rev. Idi said “It is unfortunate that Bishop John Wesley Yohanna has abandoned the United Methodist Church that elected him Bishop and aligned himself with the new Breakaway Global Methodist Church. However, I want to tell everyone of you here that the United Methodist Church is a vibrant church and will continue to be so in Nigeria. I call on you not be distracted but focused on the business of the conference in order to secure the United Methodist Church in Nigeria.” Rev. Idi congratulated the United Methodist Church in Nigeria for the Centenary Celebration of the 100 years of mission that gave birth to the church in Nigeria. He called on members of the United Methodist Church in Nigeria to look toward unity, peace and reconciliation in casting vision for the future of the United Methodist Church in Nigeria.
In his respond, the lay leader of the Central Nigeria Annual Conference who spoke on behalf of other lay leaders said “we should not be worried about the dissaffiliation going on in United States and other parts of Europe and adopted by few in Nigeria instead we should focus on Christ as the author and finisher of our faith.” Mr. Godwin congratulates the United Methodist Church in Nigeria for the Centenary Celebration and admonished members of the church in Nigeria to Reclaim, Revive and Renew the United Methodist Church in Nigeria

In his sermon at opening worship of the Annual Conference session, Rev. Eli S. Yakku the District Superintendents of Fan District said
“As we gather in reflection and celebration of a century of faith, let us embrace the essence of our journey—reclaiming the spirit that binds us, reviving the fervor within our hearts, and renewing our commitment to the mission entrusted to us by our Creator.”

Earlier on before the Annual Conference begin thousands of United Methodists gather in Bambur and Filiya to celebrate the 100 years of missionary work that gave birth to the United Methodist Church in Nigeria. In a 100 anniversary service which was held at the Rev. Aliyu Baraya Memorial First United Methodist Church a history of missionaries activities was read and an award presented to person who have played notable roles I the development of the United Methodist Church in Nigeria.

In her address at the service in Bambur, the Conference Administrative Assistant Rev. Gloria Iliya Dogara said:

“In the tapestry of time, threads of challenges and triumphs have woven together to shape the United Methodist Church. Today, we stand at the crossroads of history, echoing the call to reclaim our roots. Let us return to the core principles that define us, rekindling the flame of Wesleyan grace and embracing the love that unites us all. To revive is to breathe life anew into our congregation. Let us invigorate our worship, infusing it with the energy of passionate devotion. May our actions and intentions revive the sense of community, creating a vibrant tapestry that mirrors God's diverse creation.”

In same vain at the memorial service held at the Samson Gwaladi Memorial Cathedral Filiya, Rev. Absolom Jeremiah the Conference Administrative Assistant for Northern Nigeria Annual Conference said:

“As we reach this significant milestone, let the spirit of renewal guide our footsteps into the future. Like the phoenix rising from the ashes, let us shed the weight of the past, emerging stronger and more resilient. Through renewal, we embark on a journey of transformation, embracing the challenges that lie ahead with unwavering faith.”
Also in his good will message during the Centenary service held at the United Methodist Negatavah, Rev. Musa lana the Conference Administrative Assistant for Southern Nigeria Annual Conference said:

“In this centenary moment, let us pledge to reclaim the essence of our faith, revive the spirit of our congregation, and renew our commitment to God's work in the world. As we move forward, may the United Methodist Church be a beacon of light, illuminating the path of love, justice, and grace for generations to come.”

Notable traditional rulers and top government functionaries sent their good will Messages for the conference meeting and the centenary celebration.

The conference came to an end today with a 23 items Resolutions and a communique. Notable among the Resolutions taken at the conference were a unambiguous votes endorsing the regionalisation Plan as submitted by the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters, endorsement of the Lubumbashi statement of the Africa Colleges of Bishops and the delegates voted in favour of remaining in the United Methodist Church irrespective of the outcome of the next General Conference. Attached is the copy of the Resolutions and communique.

June 12th, 2023

To All Annual Conference delegates of

The United Methodist Church, Nigeria Episcop

RE- JOINT SPECIAL CALL SESSION

Grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with. We trust this letter finds you doing well.

As your duly elected Conference Secretaries, we write to clarify questions some of you are asking regarding a meeting held June 10th, 2023 at McBride United Methodist Church Magami, Jalingo.

In regard to your questions, we want you to note the following:

1. That paragraph 603.5 only authorizes the bishop to call for “an annual conference special session with the concurrence of three-fourths of the district superintends” and such special call session shall be called in written by the bishop. In addition to this, our annual conference rule No.3 states “A special call session of an annual conference can be summoned in written in no less than 10 days prior to the convening date…” The meeting held in McBride on Saturday June 10th did not meet the above provision, as Bishop John Wesley Yohanna has not consulted all district superintendents and did not issue any call letter specifying the reason for the joint special call session of four annual conferences as has been speculated.

2. Rev. Eli S. Yakku the district superintendents of Fan district, the largest district in Nigeria and other district superintendents were NOT concurrently consulted as required in paragraph 603.5 of the 2016 Book of Discipline.

3. Moreover, there is no provision in our Book of Discipline or conference rules that allows Bishop John Wesley Yohanna to call a joint conference session of four annual conferences without the approval of the majority of the annual conference delegates. Paragraph 603.5 allows only for an annual conference special call session. The meeting held June 10th, 2023 at McBride Magami could best be described as a meeting of “GM Church agitators.”

4. The purported letters are said to have been written by Mr. Aliyu Mbiko, Rev. Felix Alexander Balasa and others violate the provisions of our Book of Discipline and our conference rules as quotes above. However, these persons were never elected Conference secretaries.

5. The only joint special call session we all agreed on is in the Grand-Gassam Just Resolutions of the Complaints filed against Bishop John Wesley Yohanna which states that Bishop Samuel Quire, Bishop Warner Brown and two members of the West Africa Episcopal Committee shall be present. Besides this, there is no joint special call session.

Thank you all. We hope this has answered your questions.

Yours Faithfully,

UMC COUNCIL OF BISHOPS CALLED TO ACT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE JUDICIAL COUNCIL RULING

From Annual Conference delegates, Conferences and Districts leaders of the four Annual Conferences of the Nigeria Episcopal Area

Issued April 29, 2023from First United Methodist Church, Bambur

West Africa College of Bishops,
Central Conference Committee on Episcopacy,
Council of Bishops,

Dear members of the West Africa College of Bishops, Committee on Episcopacy, and the Council of Bishop of the United Methodist Church,

Grace and peace of God to you bishops.

We, the Annual Conference delegates, Conferences and Districts leaders both lay and clergy of the four Annual Conference of the Nigeria Episcopal Area are deeply troubled by the inability of the West Africa College of Bishops to resolve the eight complaints filed against Bishop John Wesley Yohanna. This scenario has continued to harm the complainants and the United Methodist Church in Nigeria. It is almost two years now since the first complaints were filed on May 11th, 2021 and none of the complaints have been resolved.

Bishops, the situation in Nigeria should be of greater concern to you all. How long would you allow this to continue? How much damage is expected to happen before proper attention is given? What if, before your intervention, the damage became irreparable? What if it is true that child trafficking is taking place at the United Methodist orphanage in Jalingo? What happened to the families and relatives of clergy and laity whom Bishop Yohanna sent to rot in jail? Why all these not investigated the way they should? Why is it that the eight formal complaints filed against Bishop Yohanna are not being treated according to the complaint processes outlined in our Book of Discipline, even after 180 days are over?

It is important you note that the problem we have in Nigeria is not a problem of the debate over human sexuality that can be deferred till after 2024 General Conference. It is a problem created by a bishop who is ineffective and has failed in doing his work according to the rules, which led to several formal complaints filed against him according the laws of the church. We demand that the laws of the church should be used to address these complaints without further delay.

We are aware that the Judicial Council in decision 1484 upheld the provisions in paragraph 413.3d (ii) and (iv) in the Book of Discipline and further stated that the Council of Bishops can intercede when complaint against fellow bishop goes beyond 180 days without resolution. None of the following formal complaints filed against the bishop before the West Africa College of Bishops were treated within the above stipulated time: The first complaint was filed by over 500 laity and clergy of the Nigeria Episcopal Area on 11th May, 2021; the second complaint was filed on June 24th, 2021 by clergy who were falsely accused by Bishop Yohanna and his aides and were detained by police, charge to court and taken to prison; the third complaint was filed by clergy who were blocked from attending the 2022 Pastors' retreat and Annual Conference session by armed police hired by Bishop John Wesley Yohanna on 9th, September 2021 and 11, November 2022 respectively; the forth complaint was filed on 9 September 2021 and 12 November, 2021 respectively by the duly elected and registered Annual Conference delegates of the Fan District of the Southern Nigeria Annual Conference who were denied access to the 2022 Annual Conference session; the firth complaint was filed on 27 September 2021 by the duly elected and registered Annual Conference delegates of the Kunini District of the Southern Nigeria Annual Conference who were denied access to the 2022 Annual Conference and whose pastor was almost assassinated by a group of ten hired assassins; the sixth Complaint was file on 1st December, 2021 and 15 July, 2022 respectively by some Annual Conference delegates of the Northern Nigeria Annual Conference were blocked from attending Annual conference session by armed police and were illegally defrocked of their clergy status; the 7th complaint was filed 25/10/2022 by Faith United Methodist Church Magami and the 8th Complaint was filed on the 15/11/2022 by persons of Bambuka Community whose children were taken from the Community to the UMC Orphanage in Jalingo. The team the college appointed to visit Nigeria came eight months after their appointment and spent only two days in Abuja but could not reach any resolutions. Another meeting with two representatives of those who filed the complaints was held in GRAND-BASSAM Coted`Ivoire and arrived at a signed Just Resolutions, but these resolutions were violated by Bishop John Wesley Yohanna. The report of these violations was reported on 18/10/2022 to both the College and Council of Bishops.

The continued silence towards these complaints is making things worse in Nigeria . For example, last Sunday April 16th, 2023, a woman was injured during church service at Kuka-Mingba Balasa charge of Ampandi District by the agitators of the GMC covered by Bishop Yohanna who were trying to force the UMC members out of church during church service. Incidences like this kept happening consistently every Sunday in churches throughout the Episcopal Area.

Bishops, as leaders of the United Methodist Church in Nigeria ; we request that you act without further delay in accordance with the decision of the Judicial Council and the provisions in paragraph 413.3d(ii) and (iv). We equally demand for a transparency in the adjudication process of all the complaints filed against Bishop John Wesley Yohanna.

FROM THE CONFERENCE SECRETARY'S DESK

To Bishop John Wesley Yohanna

Nigeria Episcopal Area of

The United Methodist Church

Dear Sir,

NOTICE OF VIOLATION OF OUR CONFERENCE RULES, BOOK OF DISCIPLINE AND THE GRAND-BASSAM JUST RESOLUTIONS

Grace and peace of God be with, I pray this letter finds you well.

I write to you on behalf of the Annual Conference delegates, Central Conference delegates and General Conference delegates both clergy and laity, purposely to draw your attention to the continued violations of our Conference Rules, Book of Discipline and the Grand-Bassam Just Resolutions which you signed. These violations continued under your administration are undermining the ministry of other clergy and laity.

The verbal announcement you made on Sunday the 2nd April 2023 among your allies to convene an Annual Conference Special session of the Southern Nigeria Annual Conference on the 4th April 2023 has violated our Grand-Bassam Just Resolutions No. 22, our Book of Discipline paragraph 603 and our Conference rules No.3 which states "A special session of the Annual Conference can be summoned in written, in no less than 10 days prior to the convening date and reason(s) for the Special call session must be clearly stated in the call letter."

For you to verbally announce to your allies to convene a Special Session of Annual Conference without following the process is undermining our Discipline.

Information verbally circulating among your allies is stating that you are planning to remove duly elected General Conference and Central Conference delegates to replace them with your allies in order to make your transition to the Global Methodist Church easier. On this we will refer you to decision 1472 of the Judicial Council that states clearly the conditions for electing new delegates; https://www.resourceumc.org/en/churchwide/judicial-council/judicial-council-decision-home/judicial-decisions/judicial-council-decision-1472 and the interpretation of Bishop Thomas Bicker ton, President of the Council of Bishops: https://www.unitedmethodistbishops.org/newsdetail/cob-presidents-letter-on-decision-1472-17358359.

In view of that, we wish to inform you that we will not accept any action from you that violates our Conference rules, Book of Discipline and the Grand-Bassam Just Resolutions, and we will continue to seek constitutional ways established by our Book of Discipline to redress any shenanigan carried out by your administration.

We are always open to the peace and unity of our dear United Methodist Church.

Thank you.

Yours Faithfully,

Rev. Ande I. Emmanuel
