The Women's Missionary Union (WMU) of the Nigeria Baptist Convention (NBC) is a foundational and dynamic organization that has played a pivotal role in the life of the church since its inception over a century ago. More than just a women's group, it was established as an institutional framework to mobilize women for missionary work and has evolved into a powerful force for spiritual growth, social impact, and women's empowerment within a traditionally patriarchal society.
Organizational Structure and Age-Grade Groups:
A distinctive feature of the WMU is its age-grade structure, which ensures every female, from childhood to old age, is nurtured in a life of mission and Christian service. The WMU comprises four main organizations:
1. Sunbeam Band: For children aged 4 to 9 years, providing early Christian education with five core 'shining aims': prayer, Bible memorization, learning about the world, helping others, and giving to missions.
2. Girls' Auxiliary (GA): For girls aged 10 to 16 years, officially recognized in 1925, with the permanent watchword 'Arise, shine; for thy light is come' (Isaiah 60:1). The GA celebrated its centenary anniversary in 2025.
3. Lydia Auxiliary: For single young women from age 17 until marriage, started as a 'Young People's group' in 1946 and later organized to minister to the specific needs of young ladies in higher institutions and vocations, preparing them for future roles in the WMS.
4. Women's Missionary Society (WMS): The umbrella organization for all married and widowed women, from which leaders and advisers are drawn to mentor the younger groups.
These organizations operate through four fundamental pillars: Prayer, Bible and Mission Study, Stewardship and Service, and Evangelism and Missions.
Mission and Activities:
The core mission of the WMU is to promote Christianity and support missionary work at home and abroad. This is achieved through:
- Spiritual Development: Encouraging daily Bible reading, prayer, and personal soul-winning.
- Missions Support: Members engage in strategic and systematic giving to fund missions, and local churches manage outreach stations, while the WMU supports national and international missionary endeavors.
- Community Impact: WMU groups are highly active in social welfare, with documented projects including visits to prisons and orphanages, educational sponsorships for underprivileged children in Nigeria and neighboring countries, and providing financial support for church building projects.
In summary, the Women's Missionary Union is an integral part of the Nigerian Baptist Convention's identity and success. For over a century, it has been a well-organized and effective body for disciple-making, mission support, and women's empowerment, leaving an indelible mark on the Baptist community in Nigeria and beyond.
