UNDERSTANDING THE POWER OF STEWARDSHIP IN DISCIPLESHIP
BIBLE READING: LUKE 19:12-27; 1PETER 4:10-11; TITUS 1:6-8; ACTS 20:28; LUKE 16:10-12
“Just as each one of you has received a Special Gift [a Spiritual Talent, an Ability graciously given by God], employ it in serving one another as [is appropriate for] Good Stewards of God’s Multi-faceted Grace [Faithfully using the Diverse, Varied Gifts and Abilities granted to Christians by God’s Unmerited Favor].” 1 Peter 4:10 (AMP)
Stewardship is more than a Duty; it is the Sacred Rhythm of a life lived in partnership with the Creator. It begins with the quiet, Transformative Realization that we are not the masters of our own existence, but rather entrusted caretakers of a Divine Inheritance. Every breath we draw, every talent we possess, and every resource in our hands is a Gift on loan from Heaven. As followers of Jesus, we have been called to move beyond the illusion of ownership and embrace the Honour of oversight. The Holy Scriptures remind us in 1 Corinthians 4:2 that the hallmark of a True Steward is Unwavering Faithfulness, anchored in the Truth of Psalm 24:1 which declares that “The Earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” When we finally surrender the burden of ownership, we are free to walk with newfound Wisdom and Humility, trading the anxiety of a "possessor" for the Profound Peace of a grateful servant.
A beautiful example of Stewardship is found in the story of the widow’s mite in Mark 12:41-44. While others gave out of their extra wealth, she gave her last two coins as a Seed of Faith. This teaches us that Stewardship isn't about the size of our gift but rather the sincerity of our sacrifice. Another powerful example is Nehemiah, who was tasked with rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. Though he was a cupbearer, he managed the king’s resources and the people’s labour with such Excellence that the wall was finished in just fifty-two days. This feat is recorded in Nehemiah 6:15–16 (NKJV), which states: "So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days. And it happened, when all our enemies heard of it... they perceived that this work was done by our God." Nehemiah didn't just manage stone and mortar; he managed God’s Timing and the people’s Hope to fulfill a Divine Plan, leaving a Testimony that even his enemies could not ignore.
Our Stewardship also covers the Spiritual Gifts God has placed within us. Romans 12:6-8 reminds us that we all have different strengths given by God’s Grace. If you have the gift of speaking, speak with Faith; if you are a helper, help with all your heart. if you are a teacher, teach with clarity. Whether you are an encourager, a giver or a leader, God wants you to use that specific "talent" to lift others up. When we use our Gifts to serve our neighbours, we are actually using them to advance God’s Kingdom. Every Act of Kindness or word of Hope is a way of managing the Grace God has poured into our lives.
To embrace Stewardship in our daily walk means admitting that every breath we take is a Gift from Heaven. Whether we have much or little, we are called to use what we have to honour God’s Will. By being careful and prayerful with our resources, we become Instruments of His Love in a broken world. Stewardship is not a burden but rather is an invitation to partner with God in His Work. When we manage our lives according to His Word, we fulfill our Purpose as Disciples and bring Glory to His Name in everything we do.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge today that we are not our own. Everything we possess belongs to You. We surrender our personal plans and selfish ambitions to take up Your Divine Will. O Lord, please help us to be faithful with the Time, the Strength, and the Resources You have put in our care. May our lives be a Reflection of Your Goodness in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.
