MAY 1 FRIDAY, 2026

OUR CITIZENSHIP IS IN HEAVEN

Text: Philippians 3:17-21

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 3:20, NIV

BH 483: When We All Get to Heaven

RBT: 1 Chronicles 7-9

Vance Havner, a Southern Baptist evangelist who lived between 1901 and 1986, once said, "If you are a Christian, you are not a citizen of this world trying to get to heaven; you are a citizen of heaven making your way through this world". This implies that everyone who is a Christian possesses heavenly citizenship.

In today's passage, Paul urged the Philippian Christians to follow His examples and those of others who live as he does. He warned them not to have business with worldly pleasures since they belong to Christ. Paul expresses his agony about those who live as enemies of the cross of Christ. He regarded them as evil-doers. Paul warned the believers not to fall prey to these evil people. Rather, they should focus their attention on heavenly citizenship.

As believers, we have a new citizenship because we are in Christ, we are seated in the heavenly places with Him. Certain things will happen to us before we finally arrive in heaven, but our citizenship is as definite now as it will be then. Though there will be a physical translation when we die; spiritually, we are there already. Since your citizenship is in heaven, you must endeavour to follow godly examples of leaders who are also heaven-conscious. You should be mindful of how you live your life by not following worldly standards. You should live with the expectation of reigning with Christ as you expect His coming.

■ Wisdom: You are not a citizen of this world.

■ Food for Thought: Are you mindful of how you live in this world?

■ Follow-up Action: Determine to emulate Christ's examples.

■ Prayer: Father, help me to live my life here with the consciousness of heaven.

WE WILL SERVE THE LORD

Text: Joshua 24:22-28

And the people said to Joshua, "We will serve the Lord our God and obey him." Joshua 24:24, NIV

BH 216: I am Resolved

RBT: 2 Kings 17-18

Imagine standing at a crossroads, looking back on a journey of triumphs and struggles. The promised land lies before you, but the choice to follow God's ways remains. God had made a covenant with Israel at Sinai (Exodus 20), and this covenant had been renewed by the new generation under Moses in Deuteronomy. But each generation needed to reaffirm its faithfulness to God, so Joshua renewed the covenant with the people.

Joshua challenged the people of Israel to serve as witnesses against themselves if they turned aside from God. He demanded that they remove their foreign gods, and without hesitation, the people obeyed him. They reaffirmed their decision that they would serve and obey the Lord their God. Realising the sincerity of the people's consecration, Joshua solemnly renewed the covenant. He wrote the agreement in the Book of the Law of God. As a final reminder, Joshua also inscribed the statutes of the covenant on a large stone slab and led them to pledge to fear and to follow the LORD God. Having impressed the memory of the occasion on their minds, Joshua released the Israelites to return to their homes.

Believers are prone to forget, so God uses reminders to keep His people on the path of obedience. Therefore, do away with anything that takes the place of God in your life and in your heart. Live in obedience to God's Word at all times, in all places, and in all circumstances, and depart from everything that will not glorify His name.

• Wisdom: There are choices in life that are life-altering.

• Food for Thought: Am I serving the only true God?

• Follow-up Action: Renew your commitment to God in your area of service in your church.

• Prayer: Father, give me the grace to love and serve You more than before in Jesus' name, Amen.

SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER

Text: Ephesians 5:21-33

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. Ephesians 5:21, 33, NIV

BH 371: Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

RBT: 2 Kings 11-13

People often misunderstand the concept of submitting to others. Dr Myles Munroe, in one of his books said, "Submission is the willingness to give up our rights to ourselves, to freely surrender our insistence on having our way all the time." Submission is not bo***ge but an expression of love between partners.

In Paul's generation, women, children and slaves were to submit to the head of the family. Paul counselled all believers to submit to one another by choice. This kind of mutual submission preserves order and harmony. The home, the foundation for relationships and personal growth, should be an example of peaceful submission. In a marriage relationship, both husband and wife are called to submit. Paul spoke first to the wives, explaining that they were to submit to their husbands as they would to the Lord. The concept of submission must come from that which exists between Christ and the church, in that Christ loves the church, and the church submits to Him. Husbands should also be willing to sacrifice for their wives and care for them as their own bodies.

How submissive are you, as a woman, to your husband? Do you respect your husband the way you should? As a man, do you love your wife unconditionally? You are to take care of your wife as your own body. The kind of treatment you would not give to yourself, do not give to your wife. God desires this, and this is how we should structure our marriage.

• Wisdom: Mutual submission is the foundation for a godly marriage.

• Food for Thought: Are you submissive to one another in your marriage as God. commands?

• Follow-up Action: Today, discuss God's expectations for your marriage with your spouse.

• Prayer: Father, I ask for grace to help my home to be how you want it in Jesus' name. Amen.

THE WAYS OF A GODLY KING

Text: Deuteronomy 17:14-20

The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the LORD has told you, 'You are not to go back that way again.' He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. Deuteronomy 17:16-17, NIV

BH 354: Living for Jesus

RBT: 1 Kings 3-5

Many contemporary leaders are self-centred: they think less of the needs of their followers and more about what they can gain from their positions. They accumulate wealth at the detriment of the people, implementing policies that only favour their interests and increase hardship. Unfortunately, some religious leaders have followed the example of these modern-day leaders.

In today's text, God instructed kings- and, by extension, leaders of all categories on how to live their lives and carry out their responsibilities. God commanded that the kings should demonstrate humility and shun lavish lifestyles. They should avoid idolatry and adultery, and meditate daily on the Word of God. Kings should also be law-abiding, showing their followers, by example, the importance of obedience. However, like many kings in the Bible, present-day traditional, political, and religious leaders often fall short of these instructions for leadership. Many of them lead a completely different lifestyle from God's instructions for kings.

There is a godly standard expected of all leaders. No matter the prevalent culture in the world, God's standard for leaders has not changed. He expects all leaders to follow the ways of a godly king as detailed in His Word. As believers, we stand in the position of leadership in our homes, offices, and community. Are you following the ways recommended for a godly leader? Have you ever wondered what you would do differently as a godly leader? Examine your conduct in the leadership position you currently occupy and start walking in the ways of a godly king.

• Wisdom: God's desire is for leaders to lead godly lives.

• Food for Thought: Are you a godly leader in your home and community?

• Follow-up Action: Resolve to be godly in all you do.

• Prayer: God, I pray that godly kings will lead our society.

DAILY ENCOUNTER WITH GOD (2026)

APRIL 7 TUESDAY, 2026

OUR ULTIMATE ALLEGIANCE IS TO GOD

Text: Acts 5:29-33

Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than human beings! Acts 5:29, NIV

BH 407: Loyalty to Christ

RBT: 2 Samuel 20-22

Ray Boltz's song "I Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb" is one song I love so much. In the song, Ray narrates how the early Christians were willing to suffer rather than deny Christ. The saddest irony is that Ray Bolts, who sang that song, succumbed to the pressure of the world and declared in 2008 that he was gay. What a change of allegiance!

According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, allegiance means faithfulness in the face of any temptation to renounce, desert, or betray. The explosion of miracles, signs, and wonders amidst Christ's disciples brought about jealousy in the high priest and his followers. They arrested the apostles, put them in jail, and instructed them to stop preaching about Jesus. But when the disciples got out of jail, they continued to preach the gospel of Christ. They arrested them again and brought them before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. Peter and the other apostles stood their ground and responded to their questioning by saying that they could only obey God, not humans. This declaration signifies their ultimate allegiance to God in the face of trials.

Today, we still have to choose to either obey God or conform to the standards of the world. God desires that every believer give Him their total allegiance, even in the face of persecution or tribulation. We show our allegiance to God by living righteously, reading the Word of God, praying without ceasing, serving Him with total commitment in and outside the church, and preaching the gospel to others.

• Wisdom: A Christian's ultimate allegiance must be to God.

• Food for Thought: Is your ultimate allegiance to God or man?

•Follow-up Action: Write out persons and things that are contending with your allegiance to God. Start readjusting your priority today.

• Prayer: Lord, deliver me today from a men- pleasing spirit. Help me to be driven by the zeal to obey You always in Jesus' name.

Pray for these ordained ministers and members of their churches: Odewole T. Niyi, Barnawa; Excellent Musa, Zaria; Adebayo D. Folashade, Kishi; Ewe M. Owen, C. Rivers; Ayotunde O. Adeniran, Osun; Abiodun H. Odejide, Tanke.

Lord, cause the change that will catapult me into positions of power and influence.

APRIL PRAYER SHOWERS: We prophesy divine protection, guidance, and safety to all attendees, speakers, and leaders travelling to this Convention in Session (Psalm 91:2- 4).
