6 Sunnahs to Perform After a Child is Born (According to the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW)

1. Tahneek (تحنيك)
Rub a softened date (or something sweet) on the baby’s palate to welcome them with barakah.

2. Adhaan & Iqamah

Recite Adhaan in the right ear

Recite Iqamah in the left ear
A way to spiritually welcome the child into Islam.

3. Naming the Child
Give a beautiful and meaningful name—preferably on the 7th day.
Names of Prophets or righteous believers are encouraged.

4. Aqiqah (عقيقة)
Slaughter an animal as a form of gratitude:

2 sheep for a boy, 1 sheep for a girl
Distribute the meat among family and the needy.

5. Shaving the Head
Shave the baby’s head on the 7th day and give charity in silver equal to the hair’s weight.

6. Circumcision (Khitan)
Recommended for boys. Should be done in early childhood as a sign of purity and cleanliness.

في ليلة النصف من شعبان يُستحَبُّ أن تقول: "اللَّهُمَّ يَا ذَا الْمَنِّ وَلَا يُمَنُّ عَلَيْهِ، يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالإِكْرَامِ، يَا ذَا الطَّوْلِ وَالإِنْعَامِ. لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ظَهْرَ اللَّاجِئينَ، وَجَارَ الْمُسْتَجِيرِينَ، وَأَمَانَ الْخَائِفِينَ. اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتَ كَتَبْتَنِي عِنْدَكَ فِي أُمِّ الْكِتَابِ شَقِيًّا أَوْ مَحْرُومًا أَوْ مَطْرُودًا أَوْ مُقَتَّرًا عَلَيَّ فِي الرِّزْقِ، فَامْحُ اللَّهُمَّ بِفَضْلِكَ شَقَاوَتِي وَحِرْمَانِي وَطَرْدِي وَإِقْتَارَ رِزْقِي، وَأَثْبِتْنِي عِنْدَكَ فِي أُمِّ الْكِتَابِ سَعِيدًا مَرْزُوقًا مُوَفَّقًا لِلْخَيْرَاتِ، فَإِنَّكَ قُلْتَ وَقَوْلُكَ الْحَقُّ فِي كِتَابِكَ الْمُنَزَّلِ عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّكَ الْمُرْسَلِ: ﴿يَمْحُوا اللَّهُ مَا يَشَاءُ وَيُثْبِتُ وَعِنْدَهُ أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ﴾[الرعد: 39]. إِلَهِي بِالتَّجَلِّي الْأَعْظَمِ فِي لَيْلَةِ النِّصْفِ مِنْ شَهْرِ شَعْبَانَ الْمُكَرَّمِ، الَّتِي يُفْرَقُ فِيهَا كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيمٍ وَيُبْرَمُ، أَنْ تَكْشِفَ عَنَّا مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ مَا نَعْلَمُ وَمَا لَا نَعْلَمُ وَمَا أَنْتَ بِهِ أَعْلَمُ، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْأَعَزُّ الْأَكْرَمُ. وَصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ النَّبِيِّ الأُمِّيِّ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلَّمَ".
