Late Sheikh AbdulRahman Yusuf Mayaki was an eminent Islamic jurist, educator, and the Grand Khalifah of the Tijaniyyah Sufi Order in Kwara State, Nigeria. Ranking as one of the most influential spiritual guides in the Ilorin Emirate, his life was characterized by a strict adherence to Sufi traditions, extensive community leadership, and a steadfast dedication to religious harmony across West Africa.

Sheikh Mayaki's identity was deeply intertwined with the foundational history of the Ilorin Emirate.
- The Gambari Connection: His family belongs to the historical Gambari quarters of Ilorin, a highly regarded center historically known for producing Islamic scholars, saints, and soldiers.
- The Progenitor: He was a direct descendant of the historic Maiyaki family line, which traces its roots back to the warrior-scholar Muhammad Sambo (popularly known as Andy Maikaho). Muhammad Sambo was a Gobir warrior from the Sokoto region who was dispatched by the Sokoto Caliphate during the reign of the first Emir of Ilorin, Shaykh Abdulsalam, to help defend the early Emirate.
- The Legacy of the Title: The name "Mayaki" (or Maiyaki) translates to "War Commander" or "Leader of the Force" in Hausa/Yoruba military tradition. Over generations, this family transitioned from territorial protectors into a respected scholarly dynasty, blending administrative influence with deep Islamic mysticism.
Leadership and Spiritual Stewardship
As an advanced spiritual master, Sheikh Mayaki assumed the role of Grand Khalifah (Chief Representative) of the Tijaniyyah Sufi Brotherhood for Kwara State.
- Spiritual Initiation: He was responsible for overseeing the Wazifah (daily congregational litanies) and Lazul (private recitations) for thousands of murids (spiritual seekers) across the State.
- Frontline Educator: Beyond his Sufi duties, he maintained traditional Islamic schools (Madrasas), providing free and subsidised education in Arabic grammar (Nahw), prophetic traditions (Hadith), and Maliki jurisprudence (Fiqh).
- Peace Building: He served as a crucial bridge between diverse Islamic factions, leveraging his knowledge and neutral posture to mediate local theological and communal disputes within Kwara State.
Death, State Burial, and Transition of Power
Sheikh AbdulRahman Yusuf Mayaki passed away in his advanced old age in the early hours of Sunday, August 23, 2020, at his residence in Ilorin.
- The Janazah (Burial Rites): Reflecting his vast spiritual status, his burial was a massive state-attended affair. The Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, was officially represented by a high-powered executive delegation. This included the Secretary to the State Government (Prof. Mamman Saba Jubril), Special Adviser on Political Matters (Sa'adu Salaudeen), Special Assistant on Islamic Religion (Zubair Ibrahim Danmaigoro), and renowned academic Dr. Mohammed Ghali Alaaya.
- National Tributes: Official condolences were sent by the Presidency and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, both commending his profound wisdom and his carriage which helped preserve internal security and peace.
- Succession: Following the vacuum left by his demise, the leadership of the Tijaniyyah Movement in Kwara State was subsequently steered by notable elders of the council, including the late Sheikh Yusuf Agbade, ensuring the preservation of the Sufi lineage in the Emirate.
