READ: 1 THESSALONIANS 4:1-12

As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more.
2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
4 that each of you should learn to control your own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable,
5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God;
6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.[b] The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.
7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
8 Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.
9 Now about your love for one another we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.
10 And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you,
12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

*THE MESSAGE:*

In our text, Apostle Paul instructed the Thessalonian Church on the need to walk and please the Lord in holiness. In view of their union with God, he made them know that it is the will of God that they be sanctified by separating themselves from profane things and being absolutely dedicated to God. They were to abstain from sexual immorality and should know how to control their body in holiness and honour (verses 3-4).

Beloved, we are called unto a life of holiness, purity and righteousness in Christ. Therefore the need for us to be faithful to God in this age which is filled with compromise, cannot be over-emphasised. Christ is coming for a blameless and spotless Church (Ephesians 5:27) that will bring Him glory and honour. As Christians, we must make every effort to do away with habits and lifestyles that are profane. Instead, we must live a life of sanctification, being sold out completely to God. This is the will of God for us. Let us shun every form of unrighteous and ungodly lifestyle and present our life as a living sacrifice unto God.

*PRAYER:* Dear Father; I offer my life unto You as a sweet smelling savour; may it bring glory to You and You alone. Amen.

*TOPIC: JUDGEMENT OF THE NATIONS*

READ: MATTHEW 25:31-46

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.
32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,
36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?
39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,
43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

*THE MESSAGE:*

Whenever people are brought before a court to be tried for offences they may have committed, the judge will sentence those who are guilty to life in imprisonment or even death, depending on the degree of offence. The ones not guilty will be set free. Jesus illustrated here how all the nations (Gentiles) will be judged before the throne of His glory. The people will be separated into two groups - the sheep on the right and the goats on the left (verses 32-33). The righteous will inherit the kingdom of God prepared for them from the foundation of the world (verse 34) while the unrighteous will be cast into hell fire prepared for the devil and his agents (verse 41b). These pronouncements will be based on the practical deeds of each group - those who did what was expected and those who did not, respectively.

Beloved, how do you expect to meet with the King of kings in judgment - as a sheep or a goat? This expectation will make us to be careful how we live our lives while here on earth, bearing in mind that Heaven and Hell are real. Those little actions which we take for granted are important to God - feeding the hungry, giving the thirsty drink, giving shelter to strangers, clothing the naked, and visiting the sick and prisoners. These will be subjects of judgment one day. While we labour in the service of God in our churches, may we never neglect our expected service in the society where we live. The choice is ours.

*PRAYER:* Dear God, help me by Your grace, to live righteously and serve humanity all the days of my life in Jesus Christ Name. Amen.

*TOPIC: AID TO HOLINESS BEFORE GOD*

READ: 1 THESSALONIANS 3:7-13

7 Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith.
8 For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.
9 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?
10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.
11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.
12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.
13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

*THE MESSAGE:*

Whenever a plantain tree bears fruit in fullness, it requires a practical support to enable it carry the fruit to maturity for use by its owners. This was exactly what Paul did for the brethren in Thessalonica. He sent Timothy to the young Church that was growing very fast, so as to sustain their faith in Jesus Christ and make them remain holy before God Almighty.
Timothy did exactly what Paul would have done if Paul had been present. He motivated them and cheered them on to grow (verse 7). Then, he reported to Paul how their faith had flourished (verses 6-8). He led the way for praying for what they may still be lacking (verses 9-10).

Beloved, whenever you are sent out on an assignment to represent your leader, how do you present issues? Do you blackmail him/her or present the issues as your leader would do? As a leader, how do you respond to the people growing or doing well under your leadership? Do you oppress or support them to do better? Remember Galatians 6:2.

*PRAYER:* Almighty God, help me to be a good ambassador of Your kingdom all the days of my life in Jesus Christ's Name, Amen.

*TOPIC: STIMULATION OF FAITH*

READ: 1 THESSALONIANS 3:1-6 (NKJV)

[1] Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone,
[2] and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith,
[3] that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.
[4] For, in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know.
[5] For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain.
[6] But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also to see you—

*THE MESSAGE:*

The words of Jesus Christ in John 16:33 "... in this world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" is a practical situation of the experience of Apostle Paul for his ministry towards the young Church at Thessalonica (Acts 17:5-9). Though, they were pre-warned of the coming persecution, still the faith of the young brethren was unknown. So, Paul considered it wise to send Timothy to the Church to stimulate their zeal in Christ again. This shows leadership accountability (verse 1). Timothy provided strength and encouragement to the young Church (verse 2). This effort worked to rescue those who might have fallen away (verse 3). They fought to ensure that their work had not been in vain (verses 4-5). Timothy brought back a positive report of the Church to Paul and the brethren, of their growth and how they longed to see them (verse 6).

How do you respond to challenges which you think would come in the lives of young brethren in our Churches and society? (Galatians 6:2). It is the duty and responsibilities of Christian leaders to encourage and strengthen young believers by guiding and directing them on the right path and preventing them from falling. It is important that we review our commitment and service to the Lord along this line, daily.

*PRAYER:* Father; please grant me the enablement to be consistent in my walk with You.

*TOPIC: BEING IN HIS GLORY*

READ: LUKE 9:28-36

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.
29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.
30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus.
31 They spoke about his departure,[a] which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)
34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.

*THE MESSAGE:*

Today is marked as the Transfiguration of Christ in the Church Calendar. Jesus took three of His disciples - Peter, James and John - to the mountain to pray. While praying, His countenance changed and He was transfigured (transformed into glory). He was then joined by Moses (representing the Law) and Elijah (representing the Prophets), who interacted with Him. The significance is that these men surrendered authority to Jesus who came to fulfil the Law and the Prophets. Because the disciples were sleeping, they could not record what Jesus discussed with Moses and Elijah; that is the danger of sleeping at the wrong time. Any person moving from a hot to a very cool environment will probably want to remain there except the person is suffering from fever. Of course, Peter suggested to Jesus that they build three tabernacles for the three personalities as to remain permanently there.

It was while Jesus Christ prayed at the mountain that the transformation came and was witnessed by those He took along (verse 32). So the place of change is at the altar of prayer. This reveals that if we set aside time to pray as Jesus did in verse 28, we too will experience the glory of the Lord. (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Beloved, what therefore, can limit us from experiencing this glory? See 1 John 2:15-17 and Proverbs 4:23. We also see that as we enter into His glory, we shall hear Him clearly and be able to understand His ways (verse 35). May this be our portion, in Jesus' Name, Amen.

*PRAYER:* Father, grant me the grace to always experience Your glory in Jesus' Name, Amen.

*TOPIC: OUR GLORY AND JOY*

READ: 1 THESSALONIANS 2:9-20

Surely you remember, brothers and sisters, our toil and hardship; we worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you.
10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed.
11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children,
12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.
13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.
14 For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews
15 who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone
16 in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last.[a]
17 But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you.
18 For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way.
19 For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you?
20 Indeed, you are our glory and joy.

*THE MESSAGE:*

Continuing from where he stopped yesterday, Paul in today's text narrates what examples he and the other apostles were to the Thessalonian Church. He was grateful to God continually that when the Thessalonian Church heard the Word from them, they received it as the Word of God and not that of men (verse 13). According to Paul, he and his co-labourers were eager to visit the Church to encourage them and their new-found faith but Satan hindered them. This incident must have led Paul to write this letter. Paul emphatically stated that their hope or joy in rejoicing would be them in the presence of Jesus Christ at His coming.

As a believer in Christ, what gives you joy or what do you glory in? Everything here on earth is temporary and will one day vanish. Our glory, joy and rejoicing should be those who together with us, will appear in the presence of Christ at His Second Coming. Let us jointly work towards this while there is still time, by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Personal Saviour and working out our salvation with fear and trembling.

*PRAYER:* Dear Lord, may I be an instrument to bring men to Your presence at Your appearing, Amen.

*TOPIC: BEING GOOD EXAMPLES*

READ: 1 THESSALONIANS 2:1-8

2 You know, brothers and sisters, that our visit to you was not without results.
2 We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.
3 For the appeal we make does not spring from error or impure motives, nor are we trying to trick you.
4 On the contrary, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.
5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness.
6 We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority.
7 Instead, we were like young children[a] among you.
Just as a nursing mother cares for her children,
8 so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.

*THE MESSAGE:*

In our text today, we see Paul emphasise how he and the other apostles were good examples for the Thessalonian Church to emulate. According to him, the qualities that qualified them to be emulated include - they did not teach them deceitfully (verse 3), they taught them aiming to please God and not men (verse 4), they didn't use flattering words neither did they use words to cover up greed - (GNT; verse 5), they did not seek glory from men (verse 6), and, they were gentle among them (verse 7).

As Christian leaders in our churches in contemporary times, we are expected to be good examples like Paul, to those we shepherd. We are expected to give account to God for them. If you have not been measuring up in this regard, you should humbly ask God for the grace to start today or improve on what you are presently doing. May the Lord help you to do this!

*PRAYER:* Merciful Father, may You help me to be a good example to people around me, Amen.

READ: 1 THESSALONIANS 1:6-10

6 You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.
7 And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.
8 The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it,
9 for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,
10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

*THE MESSAGE:*

Paul commended the Thessalonian Church of imitating the apostles and Christ by responding to the Gospel in spite of affliction. By so doing, they became examples to other believers in Macedonia and Achaia (verses 6-7). They abandoned their idolatrous background to follow Christ and "to serve the living and true God" (verse 9). There was a total turnaround by the Thessalonians.

In our Christian journey, may we emulate the Thessalonian Church by totally yielding ourselves to serving the Lord! Let us abandon anything that still encumbers us from totally serving the Lord in Spirit and in truth. Let us have a heart check today and abandon every dumb idol in our lives which may be hindering us from following Christ and serving God wholeheartedly. May the Lord bless us as we take this important step!

*PRAYER:* Lord Jesus, please help me to turn away from every wrong direction and to follow You fully.

*TOPIC: CHILDREN AND THE KINGDOM OF GOD*

READ: MATTHEW 18:1-16

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
2 He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them.
3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
4 Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
5 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!
8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.
9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.
[11] [a]For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.
12 “What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?
13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off.
14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.
15 “If your brother or sister[b] sins,[c] go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.
16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three’

*THE MESSAGE:*

IN out text, Jesus talks about little children and the kingdom of God. As the Apostles were struggling amongst themselves to know who was the greatest, Jesus informed them that they must be as humble as a little child. Little children are trusting, lowly, loving, open and eager to learn, and also forgiving, among other things. Jesus warned that if anyone causes children to sin, such a person will be in serious trouble (verse 6). He also warned that we must not despise little children because in heaven, their angels behold the face of God (verse 10). That is, children enjoy a special privilege.

How do you treat little children - your own children and those of others? Remember, they occupy a special place in the heart of God. We must therefore be careful how we handle them. As Jesus stated, we must humble ourselves like these little children if we must enter heaven. That is, we must be children in heart and in attitude, to make heaven. How ready are you? Some people say that God does not have grandchildren but only children. So, anyone who humbles himself like a little child, is a child of God.

*PRAYER:* Dear Lord, make me a little child in thought and action so I can qualify for heaven.

READ: 1 THESSALONIANS 1:1-5

Paul, Silas[a] and Timothy,
To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
2 We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers.
3 We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
4 For we know, brothers and sisters[b] loved by God, that he has chosen you,
5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake

*THE MESSAGE:*

Paul was labouring in prayer for the Thessalonian Church. However, his prayer concern was not what obtains today in the modern Church, especially in Africa. The content of his prayer included - giving thanks to God for them, remembering constantly their work of faith, their labour of love and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

All believers in Christ are required to pray. The issue is, what do we pray about? Many modern Churches in Africa concentrate on prayer for themselves and material blessings alone. Philippians 4:6 enjoins us thus, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." Some of us pray out of anxiety - what shall we eat, what shall we drink, what shall we put on? And when we do this, we find it difficult to intercede for others or to pray for their spiritual growth, like Paul did for the Thessalonian believers. May the Lord help us to change our prayer focus!

*PRAYER:* Oh Lord, give me the burden to pray for others. Amen.
