HELPING OTHERS VOL. 14 NO 19 SUNDAY 10TH MAY, 2026
Often times, we get too caught up in a world of our own that we are so absorbed with only the needs of our family members that we become oblivious of the needs of others. Yet, helping others should be every christianās responsibility and done with intentionality.
In Phillipians 2:4, the scripture gives a short and simple command on how christians should treat others: āLook not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.ā This implies that all christians, regardless of gender, age, or position, should relate with ourselves in love and with concern for the welfare of one another. Of course, this does not mean that we should abdicate the responsibility of caring for our family, or indulge in any form of improper interference in the affairs of others. It simply means that we should not get so consumed by our own issues or challenges that we do not notice the need of the people God has set on our path. We should look beyond our immediate family, be sensitive to the welfare of others, and endeavour to assist other people within the limits of our ability. Without any doubt, there are many people around us who are burdened and distressed, with some form of physical, emotional, financial or spiritual needs, and in dire need of someone to care for, or comfort them. In a way, these are the people that the scripture refers to as our neighbours in Luke 10:29-31, and we should not in good conscience neglect them.
God has not called us to live a selfish life, rather, He has called us to bear one anotherās burden by caring for others (Gal. 6:2). You should not stay aloof while other people around you suffer when you can help. Moreover, let the love of Christ flow through you to others, regardless of their denomination, gender or race (Mk. 12:31). You are the salt of the earth (Matt. 5:13), therefore, ensure that you have a positive influence on everyone you come in contact with. Be a channel of blessing to people in your workplace, neighbourhood, church and community. God expects you to be the answer to the prayers of some people and we must be conscious of this. Beam a ray of hope to the needy as much as you can. In addition, share the gospel of salvation with those around you, and endeavour to win them for Christ. Help others fulfill their purpose, occupy their place, find their relevance and attain their significance in life. Offer kind and encouraging words to those who are helpless, discouraged and broken-hearted.
Finally, do all the good you can, by all the means you have, in all the ways you know, for as long as you can. True happiness is found in helping others. As our Lord Jesus Christ said āit is more blessed to give than to receiveā (Acts 20:35).
Be a channel of blessing to someone this week and let someone smile today, just because you care. Shalom!
