*He will not abandon you*

Isaiah 49:15 "Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee."

It is generally believed that nursing mothers are caring and compassionate to the cries of thier sucking babies.

For this reason many of them find it difficult to wean thier babies considering the sleeplessness and the discomfort of their babies at the early stage of weaning.

Some of them even believed weaning a baby at early stage is unhealthy and would affect the baby's healthy growth as some babies may refuse to feed on solid.

This is why you will see a child of 3-4 years still breast feeding because the mother refused to wean her early.

I could remember how my wife felt when i suggested to her that we should wean our second baby at early stage. The compassionate look on her face was enough for me to reconsider my suggestion.

So normally it will be hard for nursing mothers to forget their sucking babies. Infact their own breasts will often remind them if they should forget it.

However as difficult as this may be, there are certain reasons that may cause a nursing mother to forget and forsake her sucking child.

There is difference between forgetting and forsaking. A woman may still remember her sucking child but for certain reasons she may have to forsake the child.

For example, a sick mother, a dying mother, a wayward mother, a poor, a travelling mother may abandon their sucking babies.

From our opening text, we see God saying that He is more compassionate to the cries of His people than any nursing mother. He said this in response to the complains of His people.

Isaiah 49:14 "But Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.

In response to their lamentations, God says it is truly possible for a sucking mother to forget and forsake their babies but it wil be impossible for Him to forsake His people regardless.

Firstly, here God sees the complains of His people as that of helpless sucking babies who cries to attract the attention of their mother..

Relationally, God is trying to remind us of the eternal relationship between Him and us which would not make him forget us nor forsake us any time because His compassion towards us will never fail.

Heb.13.5 (AMP) "Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]

Here the author of Hebrew is givng us a godly counsel to resist all ungodly desires and pursuit of mudane things whenever we are trusting God for help, knowing that our Heavenly Father would not leave us helplessly.

Meanwhile, as wonderful as this promise of God is, it requires our faith and that we position ourselves in a way and manner that shows that we are truly helpless without God.

Exodus 3:7 "And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;

This happened after 430 years captivity of the God's people in Egypt where no one could help them until the day God heard their cries and intervened.

Beloved, do not give up on God as God will never give up on you. To give up on God is to be tempted to take ungodly steps to help ourselves. Therefore be patient and believe that God is ever faithful to His promises.

*The best act of forgiveness*

Luke 23:35 "Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Oftentimes you hear some believers claim they want be like Jesus both in truth and in deed but the moment they are faced with temptation that requires the Christlike character, you will hear them say no one can be like Jesus.

The above scripture reveals one of the characters of Christ that is worthy of emulation for those who have received the Spirit of Christ by the reason of salvation.

Yes those who are born again, because it will be difficult for a natural man to emulate such character in their sinful nature whether they are religious or not.

The truth is, it may also be difficult for carnal Christians who are still living the Christian life by the influence of their old sinful nature instead of their new divine nature including ministers of God.

We have seen and heard several cases where ministers of God would hurl curses on their offenders especially ministers with prophetic grace. They often use the old testament prophets to justifiy their carnality.

They fail to realise that the Spirit at work in them is neither the spirit of Elijah nor Elisha but the Spirit of Christ.

The most disheartening part is the effect of their errors upon their followers because many of their followers would ignorantly emulate them believing such act is right before God.

From the above scripture, we see Jesus portraying a good example for us all to emulate. As i have often said that if this is only all i know about Jesus, it is enough to convince me that Jesus is more than a servant of God but truly the Son of God, the Lord and the Saviour of all men.

Considering the persecutions, implication, torture, shame, reproach, betrayal, rejection and cruxification coming from the same people He came to save, i think they all deserve to die humanly speaking.

But here we see the Son of God asking His Father to forgive them including those who cursed themselves.

Matthew 27:25 'Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

The truth is, they have all be forgiven by God through Jesus' forgiveness and intercesory prayer.

This also reveals that God is ever ready and willing to forgive any act of sin if we will acknowledge our sins, seek forgiveness and repent.

Another thing noteworthy here is the next stament of Jesus"for they know not what they do"

This means, the people were ignorant of their evil acts towards Jesus. That is, they cannot explain why they were accusing and maltreating an innocent man.

Jesus' statement reveals that He knew they were only been used by the devil as the bible earlier reveals the origin of thier evil acts towards Him.

Luke 22:3 "Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

1 Corinthians 2:8 "Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory."

This reveals that both the Jews and the Romans truly do not know the reason for their acts of wickedness towards Him. They were only been used by the devil.

Now let us look into few importance lessons to learn from this outstading example of our Lord Jesus

(1) As believers, we must learn to heartily forgive people regardless of their offences towards us.

(2) Rather than hurling curses on people in vengeance, let us pray to God to forgive them as this would comfort us, heal our hurts and even vindicate us.

(3) We must also recognize that our offenders are only be used by the devil to tempt us to sin against God, to hurt us or harm us especially when their offences are without cause.

*The enemy of future success is past success*

Philippians 3:13 "Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,"

This morning let us learn a vital principle of success from Apostle Paul as this would help us to succeed in our endeavours

In the previous verses, the Apostle tells us the sacrifices he payed in order for him to know Christ perfectly, to have fellowship in Christ’s sufferings and to have a full taste of Christ power of resurrection.

All these were Apostle Paul Christian life goals. The Apostle said even though he have been working towards attaining these goals, yet he is yet to experience them in a perfect state.

For this reason he would not conclude that he have made it to his expected height or that he have arrived but here is the secret of his pursuit "forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.

Of course the Apostle achieved His goals. We know this from the letter he wrote to Timothy towards the end of his life.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

As believers in Christ, what are things we are aspiring to achieve in order to have a successful Christian race?

My emphasis this morning is on Paul's secret of success as it will help us to also succeed in all endeavours of our life.

When the Apostle says he has just one secret to success, it means he does two things at a time and that is he "forget to pursue" not "forget and pursue"

That means forgetting his past is the drving force behind is pursuit of what lies ahead. The question we must ask is, what past did he forget?

The past achievement he mentioned in the previous verses. All his past moral, spiritual, religious, traditional achievements would hinder him if he doesnt leave them behind to pursue and achieve his new goals in Christ.

To leave them behind simply means he was not living in the consciousness of those achievements anymore but rather living in the consciousness of what is ahead of him.

Now here is the lesson. To succeed in any areas of our endeavors requires that we put our eyes off our past and present achievements in order for us to attain a greater height in life.

Self satisfaction is the reason why many people are not progressing in life. They continue to live by their past glory and achievements which have become a stumbling block to thier next level.

As believers We must fight against the syndrome of arrival mentality in order for us to continue to run until we have truly arrive.

Yes there is nothing wrong in acknowkeding our past achievements as they would remind us of our humbling beginning and to also appreciate God, but there is something wrong to dwell in those past or present achievements.

Moreso, we may be tempted to be complacance in our achievements if we continue to look at people that are behind us instead of looking at those ahead of us.

"For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. 2 Corinthians 10:12

It is unwise to use other people limitations as a yard stick to measure our own success. On the other hand, it is wise to use other people greatness to see our own limitations.

As Christisns the bible mentioned two people that we ought to look unto as role model namely, Abraham and Jesus.

"Look unto Abraham your father, and unto Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.Isaiah 51:2

"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:22

This means if you have not attained the success of Jesus and Abraham, do not rest but keep pressing forward until you are there.

In addition, it is important we have a glimpse of our future or what lies ahead of us as this would daily aspire us to set new goals in every phase of our lives so as to arrive at our future.
