TOPIC:
Whose Son Are You?
TEXTS:
1st Samuel 17:55-58
MESSENGER:
Elder Manasseh Umoette
A passage was read to us earlier on, in 1st Samuel 17:55 – 58, “And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is. And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
From the scriptures as above, the theme of our message today is, “Whose Son Are You?.
The story of Goliath is that he was a warrior. He challenged the Israelites, asking them if they had anyone who can contend or confront him!
No one attempted to confront him. Saul was even afraid of Goliath. David took up the intention. He was taken to appear before the king. When he appeared, the king told David, you are too young. He insisted, I can confront Goliath. As young as you are, the king again asked him, “why do you think you can?
David responded to the King, I have been confronting and overpowering wild animals in the bush. I will use the name of God, whom Goliath has dishonoured and confront him. In that name, I will win him.
David added, all what I need to confront and win this man, Goliath, is the power of God and not the worldly weaponry
Remember, the King had asked, “whose son is this” that he’s so confident.
Goliath saw David as a young boy and had started bragging, calling him names. David in those bragging of Goliath, responded, “I’ll use the name of God almighty and confront you”. He did and overpowered Goliath with just a catapult and one stone.
One thing I noticed in that scripture is that, the record described that, Goliath felt forward. He did not fall backwardly. His battalion ran away and David went in and beheaded Goliath with a machete. Like the Bible story says, David took the head to King Saul and the king asks again, “whose son are you?”
David responded, “I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”
This response by David throws a caution to us, parents. So, I’ll admonish us to be careful of what we do because, certainly, your child shall be ask, ‘whose son (child) are you’?
This is why the Bible in John 8:44, says, “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
This means, there are children of devil in this one. There are also others, of God.
Matthew 5:9 confirms it when he says, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” So, are you the son of God?”
Romans 8:14 also says, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
Are you led by the spirit of God? If so, you are a child of God. Then you are blessed with power from God.
Do self assessment by your actions. If your answer is in the negative, do like the prodigal son in Luke 15:13; from here you can have benefits of divine protection, safety, provision and care, power as he promised, and above all, you have eternal life.
As a child of God, you have many benefits here on earth, and even in death and after this earthly life.
Sing with me, ‘are you a child of God? I am a child of God. Then, answer, ‘Are you sure?
May God help us to answer faithfully that, we’re His children in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
