Many people say the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. The true definition of insanity for a believer is knowing exactly what God has commanded you to do (or not do) and still doing it anyway.

Today, it seems that s*x is everywhere. The less clothes you have on, the more people flock to you. The more s*xual you portray yourself to be, the more “popular” you become.

I went through a phase where I equated s*x to love. I felt that if someone wanted to have s*x with me, then they loved me. I would give myself away to people and I felt like it was okay, because I “knew” them or “we were friends first”. Nothing I was doing honored God in any way and I knew it. After a short, worthless session of s*xual sin, I almost always felt convicted. I would lie to myself and make myself believe that if I went to church on Sundays and went to bible studies on Wednesdays, then a little s*x every now and then really didn’t matter. God would still forgive me, but that was the furthest things from the truth. I was filthy on the inside. My heart wasn’t pure, so my “worship” on Sundays meant nothing, because I was back to being worldly as soon as I stepped out of church.

Everything around me was falling apart. I kept wondering why God wasn’t answering any of my prayers. Psalms 34:17 clearly states that God hears the prayers of the righteous. (The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.) God began to strip everything away from me. My eyes began to open and I realized I was creating soul ties with people who weren’t even meant to be a part of my life. I started to fast and pray and ask God for a release. I began to get so desperate for God that anyone who stood in my way had an open door to leave. Nothing else mattered to me anymore, except my relationship with the Lord.

Question of the Day:

Is there a situation in your life that has made you desperate for God? If so, what was the situation?

Cut Others Some Slack

The Bible says wisdom is full of mercy and good deeds: “The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17 NIV).

In other words, it’s wise to show grace to people when they mess up, when they blow it, when they sin, when they fumble, when they have faults, and when they fail.

Who is the wisest person in the universe? God. Who is the most merciful person in the universe? God. So, any time I judge, I’m being foolish. Any time I’m merciful, I’m being like God. And that’s wise! It’s wise to cut people some slack, because God cuts you slack all the time.

Everything you have in life is a gift from God — even your next breath. If you got what you deserved, you wouldn’t be alive. Yet God doesn’t give you what you deserve. He gives you what you need. That’s mercy.

Wise people give people what they need, not what they deserve. That’s mercy, and that’s wisdom. Wise people don’t emphasize other’s mistakes, because they are merciful.

Proverbs 17:9 says, “Love forgets mistakes; nagging about them parts the best of friends” (LB).

Mike has been on the Saddleback staff in facilities for many, many years. I ran into him the day he and his wife, Sally, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Sally was getting ready to drive off, so I walked over to her car to congratulate her. I asked her, “What is the secret of a 50-year marriage?” She looked at me and said, “Pastor, I never tried to change him.”

After she drove off, I walked up to Mike, who was further up the way and said, “Mike, what’s the secret to 50 years of marriage?” He said, “I never tried to change her.”

Wisdom is full of mercy.

The Consequence of Not Trusting God

You will have moments of weakness that test your faith and commitment. Because we are not perfect chances are you will give in to the weakness a time or two. Your flesh will decide to take the path of least resistance and the world will be your guide. I’m so thankful that in these moments God’s mercy and grace are abounding and generous! However, please understand that there are consequences to your sin and disobedience.

The Bible mentions time and again stories of godly people who failed to trust God in moments of hardship. Abraham claimed his wife as his sister more than once out of fear. Moses struck the rock in Numbers 20 in disobedience and, as a result, was not able to enter into the promised land. We’ve all been there, but we’ve all also experienced the results of not trusting God.

Proverbs 11:28 speaks to the consequences of trusting in riches (and other things) instead of God. The verse says that when we do this we will fall. No doubt that trusting in the world leads to failure. Furthermore, Proverbs 28:26 says that those who are wise enough to trust in Him will be kept safe, as opposed to those who trust in themselves. Here the correlation is that when we decide to trust God there is a safety that guards us. How encouraging is that! Such a blessing to know we have God on our side through thick and thin.

Today’s devotional wasn’t meant to be a fear tactic, but a wise warning to the inevitable consequences of trusting in yourself or the world. I’ve found that to be true and you probably have too, but my prayer is that we don’t have to face those consequences again. This is a reminder to keep your trust in God through the good, the bad, and the ugly. You will always regret not trusting Him, but you will never regret having done so.

How God Perceives Your Trust

It’s not only important to understand why trust is important as a whole, but also why, specifically, is trust important to God. Psalm 20:7 identifies that many will trust in the world and the things it has to offer, but few will trust in God. Perhaps it’s for this very reason trust is so important to God--because few do.

Trust is an indicator of our heart’s condition, reflecting where our loyalty and commitment lies. Trusting God in the midst of our trials and storms shows Him that we count on Him, not the world. When the choice comes, to choose to make things work by the means this world offers or rely on God, we will choose to rely on God.

I can’t help but wonder if part of the difficulties in our lives are for this very reason; so that we learn to trust God? When I faced my own fork in the road last year, coming out of it I couldn’t help but think I went through all of it just so I could learn to trust God to a greater degree. Even today a battle arose from the enemy to attack me as a writer; someone threatening to tarnish my character because they didn’t like what I wrote. This morning I battled, wondering if I should give into their words.

Thankfully I had godly counsel around me to encourage me to trust what God has called me to do. If God has called me to share my testimony through writing, I must hold firm to what He has called me to. Otherwise, I would be bending to the world instead of remaining steady to the course He has marked out before me.

Are you facing a battle that calls for your trust? Perhaps someone is coming against you as well? Or there is a situation at work that confronts you to operate out of fear or trust? Whatever it is, may your heart reflect your commitment to God.

Choose today to be someone committed to the calling, purpose, and God-ordained direction on your life. Few will choose this path but to those who do, watch God paint your story with vibrant colors only reserved for those who are faithful, loyal, and fully committed to Him.

Why Trust Is So Important

Trust can be delicate and challenging to find. Most people have pieces of history where someone let them down or took advantage of them. There was existing trust extended to another and that trust was shattered in the aftermath of betrayal. It doesn’t matter who you are; I’ve witnessed a scale where pastors limit their circle in extreme lengths, to people shutting out those that love them most to avoid loss again.

Trust is one of the most important attributes of the Christian walk. Trusting God and His process is key to our faith journey, and yet for most of us, our experiences in our past can leave us scared to death or unsure of how to trust. This reading plan will walk you through a trust journey; however, you must first understand why it’s important.

Proverbs 3:5-10 is an exploration of that why. The first step in our why is to acknowledge our God and His plans. An understanding of the power, depth, and perfection of His plan must be acknowledged by you and me. When we can embrace that His plan and process, the best possible journey to be on, something happens. God MAKES our path straight.

There is a direct correlation between acknowledging Him and the direction of our lives. I know it can be hard to trust the invisible and unforeseen, but you must extend your trust to God. When you don’t do that you are taking your future out of the hands of the Almighty and placing it into a dangerous place...the world.

Take some time to meditate on today’s verses and come to terms where your trust must be. Do that and watch God go above and beyond your expectations. I learned this the hard way, and it was a year ago I truly learned to embrace one statement: “I trust in Your process.” I am continually reciting this phrase in my mind when I don’t understand the situation I am facing. Because I don’t understand or don’t know what will happen, trust is necessary. It’s not something I decided to do once and have not hesitated to do since; I must continually remind myself in the unknown that God has a plan, He is in control, and He has my best interests at heart. So, all I have is trust.

Join me today in trusting God’s process.
