BIBLE TEXT: HOSEA 6: 1-10
GOLDEN VERSE: "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings" - Hosea 6:6
BIBLE READING IN ONE YEAR: Genesis 39-41
EXPOSITORY
The context of this statement by prophet Hosea was about the nation of Israel who had drifted far from God.
They still kept up the rituals, the sacrifices and outward things of religion.
Every now and then after they fell into sins, they turned back to the Lord, they said and did the right things, but it didn't last.
And so the Lord says to His people in Hosea chapter 6, "Your love is like a morning cloud, like the dew that goes away early." What does God have to say to people whose repentance are not genuine?
He says, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." That is, "I desire to show mercy to you, I do not desire to demand a sacrifice of atonement from you."
God does not desire to extract from us sacrifices for our sins and promises that we'll do better next time and all the other things we might do to make up for our weakness, God sweeps it all away with this one sweeping statement: "I desire mercy, not sacrifice".
To desire is a feeling that accompanies an unsatisfied state, or to have an inclination to want somethings, to wish and expect something.
In the OT sacrifices were made for sin to be atoned for (covered). in the New testament, Jesus made the One and final sacrifice for the sins of all humanity (Heb 9: 26b; 28).
The Pharisees of old, delighted in the many sacrifices and rituals and so they criticized Jesus for befriending sinners or allowing His Disciples to harvest grain on a Sabbath.
In response Jesus said "I desire mercy, not sacrifice."
Jesus came to show mercy for all mankind and not to demand any more sacrifices from man but that man should repent and be saved. He became the friend of sinners and tax collectors.
Matt 9:12-13 On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. NIV
If you desire mercy, go back to the heart of God for you at the Cross and stare at His mercy through meditation and prayer, until your heart begins to say, "I too desire mercy".
The heart of God is what the Bible says, "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you" (Ephesians 4:32).
Let your life be the display of the gospel of Christ as you demonstrate the love of God to humanity.
Jesus came to save sinner for He said that only the sick need a doctor.
Many today in the household of God boast of their christian activity but hates the Body of Christ.
The sacrifice of mercy God expects from you is to tell others, show sinners the love of God by telling them the good news, Jesus Christ for his salvation.
The sacrifice of mercy God expects from you today is to tell someone of God's love (Jn 3:16).
PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant me the grace to share the goodness of your mercy today with someone, in Jesus Christ's Name. Amen
