TOPIC: FUTILITY OF CHRISTIANITY WITHOUT THE RESURRECTION

BIBLE READING:
1 Corinthians 15: 12-19; 22-30
1 Corinthians 15: 12-1912 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 1 Corinthians 15: 22-30 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all why are they then baptized for the dead30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour

KEY VERSE:
"If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable." -1 Corinthians 15: 19

MEDITATION:
In today’s Bible passage, Apostle Paul turns attention to the all-important subject of the Christian Faith – the resurrection. This was because he got the news that some of the Corinthian Christians were saying that there is no resurrection of the dead. As brethren, especially leaders, we must be alert and promptly identify and address any unscriptural belief or doctrine that finds its way into the Church. In response to the news, Paul outlined the implications of the falsehood and set the records straight from scriptures. He affirmed the resurrection of Jesus Christ, otherwise, there will be no resurrection of the dead; the preaching of the gospel and our faith in Christ is useless; we are carriers of falsehood; we will be the most miserable people that ever lived since our faith cannot accomplish anything for us beyond this life. Furthermore, he affirmed that because Christ has risen from the dead, believers who died in faith believing in Him will also rise from the dead unto a new life. Finally, he asked a rhetoric question to drive home the point about the assurance of resurrection – “if there is no resurrection, why should we be risking our lives preaching the gospel day by day? The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the core and foundation of the Christian faith. Whereas the founder of every other faith is dead and buried awaiting judgement, Jesus rose from the dead and alive forevermore. Why do we sometimes doubt our faith in Jesus?

PRAYER:
LORD Jesus, quicken me daily by Your resurrection power.

TOPIC: BOWELS OF HELL WAS SHAKEN

BIBLE READING:
Matthew 28: 1-6
1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the LORD descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.6 He is not here: for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the LORD lay.

KEY VERSE:
"And behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the LORD descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it." - Matthew 28: 2

MEDITATION:
Jesus, through his death and resurrection, dethroned Satan from his lordship over man eternally. Man has therefore become the lord and master of Satan and his cohorts of demons. Hebrews 2: 14, 15 is explicit on this victory for man, "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bo***ge." The bowels of hell was shaken to its foundation when Jesus went to the dark domain of the enemy of man to combat and defeat Satan. There, He disarmed Satan and his agents, spoiled principalities and powers and made an open show of them as He triumphed over them (Colossians 2: 15). The tomb of Jesus is empty. Jesus is no longer in the grave as death could not hold Him captive. The victory Jesus purchased with His blood is our victory. Satan has no right again to afflict and torment believers in Christ Jesus. The power of God that raised Jesus from the dead when He shook the bowels of hell works in us, so our victory is guaranteed (Romans 8: 11; Ephesians 3: 20). We must appropriate this power daily to walk in all-round victory over every power of the devil. Why do many Christians still have the flesh, sin and the devil reign over them?

PRAYER:
LORD Jesus, quicken me today and always by Your resurrection power.

TOPIC: DEFEAT OF THE GRAVE

BIBLE READING:
MATHEW 28:1-8
1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. 2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the LORD descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. 3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. 6 He is not here: for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the LORD lay. 7 And go quickly, and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead; and, behold, He goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see Him: lo, I have told you. 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring His disciples word.

KEY VERSE:
"O death, where is your sting O Hades where is your victory." -1 Corinthians 15: 55

MEDITATION:
Our key verse today poses a question of triumph and victory to the defeated Death and Hades that had remained unbeatable and unconquerable for so long. At the resurrection of the LORD Jesus Christ, they were conquered eternally. They could not hold the LORD Jesus captive the way they had done with all the dead that died before Christ.

Our LORD and Saviour demonstrated His power over death and the grave when He raised Lazarus who had been dead for four days to life. He said, “I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live; And whosoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?" (John 11: 25, 26).

Truly, the wages of sin is death, but as many who have trusted in the sacrifice of the Saviour on their behalf have been made free from the law of sin and death. They have the gift of God which is eternal life in Christ Jesus and they have passed from death into life, and darkness to light (Romans 6: 22, 23, John 5: 24; 1 Peter 2: 9). Believers who understand the victory of Christ over the grave are no longer fearful and bound by the terror of death (Hebrews 2: 14, 15). They declare in earnest expectation and hope that they will not be ashamed in anything and that Christ will be magnified in them whether by life or by death (Philippians 1: 20).
Do you have confidence in the victory of Christ over the grave?

PRAYER:
Thank you LORD Jesus because no force or power of darkness and hell can hold me captive.

TOPIC: JESUS' SUBMISSION TO PAIN AND REJECTION

BIBLE READING:
Isaiah 53: 1-7
1 Who hath believed our report and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see Him, there is no beauty that we should desire Him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.4 Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

KEY VERSE:
"He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth." -Isaiah 53: 7

MEDITATION:
I had a tiny growth on my forehead that grew slightly bigger than expected and disfigured my face. I then decided to go for a surgery to take it out. During the procedure, the Consultant Surgeon observed that I did not shake or cringe despite the sharp pain I felt as his knife was cutting through the growth. I thought within myself that I chose to submit to the pain so that I could get my face back to its beautiful state. A couple of weeks after the surgery, the wound healed totally and my face was restored without any trace of the growth. My submission to the surgeon’s knife was for a purpose I would cherish; and so it was! At the Garden of Eden, humanity became flawed and scarred due to disobedience by Adam and Eve. Sin entered into the world, and turned humankind against God. Jesus Christ came as the Seed of the woman (Genesis 3: 15) to suffer pain and rejection without complaining or resisting, even though He had all the power to do so, just so that He could restore humankind back to their original position with God (Isaiah 53: 7). Christ paid the ultimate price. He suffered and died on the Cross of Calvary, thereby taking away the shame, guilt and consequences of sin (1 Peter 2: 24; Isaiah 53: 6). Would you make Jesus your Saviour and LORD today?

PRAYER:
LORD Jesus, let me be worthy of the price You paid for me on the Cross.

TOPIC: THE WORTH OF LIFE

BIBLE READING:
Matthew 6: 25-34
25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature28 And why take ye thought for raiment Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat or, What shall we drink or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

KEY VERSE:
"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing."-Matthew 6: 25

MEDITATION:
The war in Ukraine started in February 2022, and nobody is sure of the end date. We saw many images of refugees with their bare lives and rucksacks turning to other countries for safety. A television channel shared the pathetic story of a particular Nigerian University undergraduate who had abandoned her studies to escape in 2014 when the war first started, and barely after returning in 2022 to round off, the war burst out again in 2023. At such a time, the superiority of life to material possessions or human accomplishments glares at us: we quickly discover that life indeed comes first. Certainly, none of those escaping from wars or some other mortal dangers would choose to exchange their lives with their possessions. Yet at normal times, we tend to reverse the order and rather worry and grumble about what we lack. Jesus, during His Sermon on the Mount draws our attention to the incomparable worth of human life: “Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing” (Matthew 6: 25). Life indeed supersedes every other thing that pertains to it. Life is a priceless gift for which we must be deeply thankful. Even when we have nothing, life is big enough. Do you ever pause to joyfully appreciate your life and truly thank God for it? Do you count your life as God’s blessing or do you worry and complain about the things you don’t have?

PRAYER:
Dear LORD, forgive me for all the times I failed to really thank you for being alive.

TOPIC: TURKEY OR EAGLE?

BIBLE READING:
Job 39: 27-30
27 Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high28 She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.29 From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.30 Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

KEY VERSE:
"Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee."-2 Timothy 1: 6

MEDITATION:
A man once brought home from farm a young eagle that had fallen out of its nest. He put it in his barnyard, where it soon learned to eat and behave like his turkeys. One day, a naturalist passed by the farm and asked why an eagle was confined to live in the barnyard with turkeys. The farmer replied that since it had given it chicken feed and trained it to be a turkey, it had never learned to fly. “Still, it has the heart of an eagle,” replied the naturalist, so can be taught to fly.” He lifted the eagle toward the sky and said, “You belong to the sky and not the earth. Stretch forth your wings and fly.” The eagle, seeing the turkeys eating their food, jumped down to join them. He then took it to a high mountain and encouraged it again, saying same words. The eagle looked towards the barnyard and up to the sky. Slowly, stretched its wings, and soared away into the heavens. “You can soar with the eagles, or you can run with the turkeys” is a common saying. Turkeys don’t do heights. They are low-level birds and void of intelligence; they will look up to the sky in the middle of a rainstorm and drown themselves. How smart is that? The LORD has put seeds of greatness in you which are meant to germinate and blossom. You’re no turkey - you are God’s eagle. Soaring is the will of God for you. Are you a turkey or an eagle

PRAYER:
Father LORD, cause me to soar like the eagle.

TOPIC: SWIFT TO HEAR

BIBLE READING:
James 1: 19, 20
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

KEY VERSE:
"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath." -James 1: 19

MEDITATION:
There is a ‘disease’ among humankind unknown to the medical science, yet can be deadly. It is called, the ‘foot in mouth’ disease. Sounds familiar, isn’t it It is a disease where you speak before you think. There is no medical cure for it because it is a spiritual problem! It comes out of a heart filled with pride. Little wonder Jesus said, “for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12: 34). It’s pride to think that your voice must be heard above others and be the last. This condition is especially prevalent among boastful talkers.

James, the brother of Jesus, counselled believers to be swift to hear, but slow to speak. You can’t have it both ways — either you are swift to hear, slow to speak, or you are swift to speak and slow to hear. Christians need to learn to listen carefully to people, not as a technique to influence anyone else, but as a way to let God’s word rid us of all uncleanness and trace of wickedness. When people say things or words that are not salutary to us - words of disagreement, criticism, dismissal—it is easy to respond in anger, especially in high-pressure situations at home, work place or even in Church. But doing so usually makes our position worse, and always discredits our witness as Christ’s followers. How much better to trust God to defend our position, rather than defending ourselves in anger and hasty words.

How are your words Hard or kind?

PRAYER:
Oh LORD, please cause my words to be few, and teach me to be quiet.

BIBLE READING:
3 John 1: 5-8
5 Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; 6 Which have borne witness of thy charity before the Church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well: 7 Because that for His Name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. 8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.

KEY VERSE:
"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares." -Hebrews 13: 2

MEDITATION:
In her book, “Open Heart, Open Home,” Karen Mains explained the difference between hospitality and entertaining. Entertaining says, “I want to impress you with my home, my clever decorating, and my cooking.” Hospitality, seeking to minister, says, “This home is a gift from my Master. I use it as He desires.” Hospitality aims to serve. Entertaining subtly declares, “This home is mine, an expression of my personality - look please, and admire.” Hospitality whispers, “What is mine is yours.” Hospitality is other-oriented for it seeks to benefit others who are in need. Hospitality speaks volume about a person’s Christianity. A Christian who practices hospitality is saying in effect, “mine may not be a showcase on the tour of homes, but God has blessed me with it, and I care enough to share that blessing with you.” In today’s Bible text, John received reports about the love Gaius had shown to fellow believers. These were mostly traveling Christians. Apparently, Gaius not only treated them well, but shared resources with them. Even though they were not close friends or family, they were cared for. Through housing, food, or money, Gaius and his congregation were supporting many traveling teachers and missionaries. John commended these actions. He further gave a crucial reason why their support is so important - that the work of God won't depend on support from non-believers. Christians ought to care about the spread of the gospel, and support those who are directly involved, especially genuine and committed missionaries. When last did you share your home with others or give to support a missionary?

BIBLE READING:
Proverbs 3: 27, 28
27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. 28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

KEY VERSE:
"And remember the words of the LORD Jesus, that He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive." -Acts 20: 35

MEDITATION:
Devout and trustworthy, Ralph struggled through tertiary education, completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme and sent out job applications. Months ran into years but no job came. His youthfulness wore out. Then, for a business loan, he approached Mama, an elderly and kind woman in the fellowship. Graciously, Mama lent him three hundred thousand Naira (N300,000) with which he started a trade. Faithfully, he returned the loan one year after, but Mama asked him to keep it and use it to reinforce his business. As the years went, Mama would always talk of her joy at seeing Ralph thriving. Her joy, she affirmed, far surpassed whatever else the said amount could have fetched her. Such is the blessedness that giving brings about. Giving gives joy and fulfilment. Christians are required to have an easy disposition to giving to the needy. God wants us to have a social responsibility towards one another. More than that, the good we do for others should be done timely, much like a meal served to someone that is hungry. Proverbs 3: 27, 28 underscores the point thus: “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Do not say to your neighbour, ‘Go, and come again, tomorrow I will give it’ – when you have it with you.” Now, how do you feel when you are able to fruitfully meet someone’s need?

LORD, grant me a willing heart to render help to others without making it difficult for them.

TOPIC: RESPONSE TO GOD'S WORD

BIBLE READING:
2 Kings 23: 1-8
1 And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.2 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.3 And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the LORD, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel.5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.6 And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people.7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.8 And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba, and brake down the high places of the gates that were in the entering in of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man's left hand at the gate of the city.

KEY VERSE:
"And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes." -2 Kings 22: 11

MEDITATION:
The spiritual strength of every believer has much to do with how much time they spend in hearing, reading, studying, meditating on, obeying and practicing the word of God. While hearing provokes faith (Romans 10: 17), heart obedience and practice of the word define the degree of our response that manifests in our daily lifestyle. God spoke to Joshua in this same manner when He charged him, “to observe to do according to all that is written therein” (Joshua 1: 8). So the ‘doing’ is the actual response to the word, which provokes a turn-around in the lives of those who have genuine encounter with the word of God. In today’s scripture reading, when King Josiah heard the promise of eventual and delayed judgment (2 Kings 22: 10-13), he did not respond with indifference or simple contentment. He wanted to get the kingdom right with God, and he knew that he could not do it all by himself – he needed all the elders, priests, prophets and all the people of Judah to join in sincere repentance with him. King Josiah stood before the people and publicly declared his commitment to obey the word of God to the very best of his ability - with all his heart and all his soul. The word pierces where no man-made sword can reach (Hebrews 4: 12). The response was a national commitment of faith. Is there an area in your life where a response to God’s word is overdue?

PRAYER:
Father LORD, I ask for grace to respond with heart obedience to Your word.

27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. 30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

KEY VERSE:

MEDITATION:
“Halima is a devil!” Screamed Brigitte. “I just hate her,” she continued. “She lied and ganged up against me. She wrote two false reports against me. My offence was that I blocked her from sexually abusing an older colleague who was married with children.” Brigitte concluded. Suddenly, Brigitte was transferred to a remote field office of the International Non-Governmental Organisation (INGO) she worked for. She believed Halima was the mastermind of the posting. Three years later, Halima was promoted and sent to this same location. Brigitte had settled in, and joined a local Church where she was the choir leader. Halima arrived at the office with a fearful apprehension that Brigitte who was now Operations Manager would pay her back in her own coin. She was wrong! Brigitte welcomed her so well and offered her a free room in her 3-bedroom apartment. Halima couldn’t understand, but Brigitte had flipped the script of hate and anger! The challenging commands that Jesus gives in today’s bible passage are clear: we’re to love, bless, and do good to others, including those who do us evil. When we do this, Jesus said that our reward will be great, and we will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. When followers of Jesus flip the script on hate, anger and abuse, they demonstrate their kinship to their heavenly Father whose care is shared without discrimination. When last did you show love for hatred

KEY VERSE:
"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and let us run with patience the race that is set before us." -Hebrews 12: 1

MEDITATION:
In 1988 when one of the sisters in my Church, a consultant Physician, passed on, we took her to her country home for burial. As we arrived at the small village, her compound was filled with women and children that she had touched their lives with acts of kindness and love. The resident Vicar of her father’s Church in the village with these women and children could not hold back their tears. The sister had obviously touched so many lives – she was a true witness! The preacher at the funeral encouraged the audience to be true witnesses like our sister. The preacher’s words brought new depth to the call in Hebrews 12 for believers to “run with perseverance” like the heroes of faith, the “great cloud of witnesses” (Hebrews 12: 1). The latter we might think are to serve as our examples of being faithful to run the race God has called us to. True! However, we’re told to “run fixing our eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12: 2) and to “consider him” when we’re tired and taxed by the race before us (Hebrews 12: 3). While we get encouragement from the faithful brethren gone before us, like the sister in my Church, we must see and find more of our strength in Christ alone. The witnesses have already seen God’s faithfulness and testify to the need to focus on Jesus. As a witness, do you point men to yourself or Jesus?

PRAYER:
