*GENERAL INTRODUCTION*
Our focus this month is migration. People constantly make decisions on movement voluntarily or otherwise. Migration can be defined as the act, process of moving from one place to another. Migration is relocation from one place to another temporarily or permanently; it could be legal or illegal. In Nigeria, migration has become endemic among young people. They are eager to leave their country in a bid to search for greener pastures elsewhere, and not just in developed countries like the United Kingdom, United States, France and the likes. They just want to leave the country at all costs for so many reasons. In recent times, the rate at which Nigerians, especially youths migrate out of the country calls for concern. Desperation has made people misbehave in an attempt to want to leave the country. There are many cases of impersonation by some Nigerians who just want to travel overseas anyhow. Some even travel via unsafe and illegitimate routes.
The question is should a believer be involved in an illegal migration, all in the name of a bad economy and insecurity in the country? What should believers do if the need to relocate arises and what should be the role of the Church to educate members against illegal migration? We should all note that, as Christians, the most essential issue in migration is the leading of the Holy Spirit, following due legal processes.

*Facilitator's Opening Remarks:*
Many entrepreneurs in Migration is an important component of population change in the human world. It is quite different from migration in the animal world. Human migration is usually a response to economic, social, cultural and political hardships in the country. Migration among animals, on the other hand, occurs due to biological or nomadic reasons. However, our focus this week is on the definition, types and causes of migration among humans.
*EDUCATION/INTERACTION PERIOD*
*A. EDUCATION/INTERACTION PERIOD DEFINITION OF MIGRATION*
Migration is the “shifting or movement of people, an individual or group of individuals from one cultural area to another, which may be permanent or temporary." Theodore Laplow describes migration as a change of residence, which does not necessarily involve any change of occupation, but it is closely associated with occupational shifts of one kind or another. According to Webster's Dictionary, the term is defined as "the act or an instance of moving from one country, region to settle in another," It is also defined as "an act of moving from one area to another in search of work." In the same vein, Eisenstaedt defines migration as "the physical transition of an individual or a group from one society to another. This transition usually involves abandoning one social setting and entering another and permanent one." Therefore, migration is the relocation of an individual from one place to another to live and/or work.
*B. TYPES OF MIGRATION*
The commonest types of migration are:
*Internal Migration:* It is the type of immigration whereby people move to a new place/home within the same state or country.
*External or International Migration:* This is the movement of people to a new place/home in a different state, country or continent.
*Emigration:* It is the process of leaving one place or country, especially one's native country, in order to settle in another.
*Immigration:* It is the movement of non-native people into a country in order to settle there.
*Population Transfer:* It is a process whereby the government forces a group of people to leave a region on the basis of religion or ethnicity. It is also called involuntary or enforced migration.
*Impelled/Imposed:* This refers to a situation when people are forced to leave a country because of unfavourable situations like religious persecution, political unrest or war.
*Step Migration:* It involves series of short and less extreme movements from a place of origin to another particular destination.
*Return Migration:* This is a voluntary movement of immigrants to their place of origin.
*Seasonal Migration:* It refers to the movement for a specific period of time in response to the climate or labour conditions.
*Chain Migration:* This entails a movement whereby a relative is able to help his or her other family members to relocate to a new place.
*Sharing Time:* Discuss the commonest migration in our contemporary time and the reasons people go for it.
*C. CAUSES OF MIGRATION*
There are two main causes of migration. They are push factors and pull factors. The differences are discussed below:
*a. Push factors:* These are the negative factors in the home country that compel people to move to another country. Such factors include poverty, high rate of unemployment, internal conflicts and wars, natural diseases, low income, lack of career development, and famine. A good example is that of Elimelek and his family members who relocated to Moab because of famine in Bethlehem.
*b. Pull factors:* These are positive expectations, which attract people to a new place. Basically, the factors include industrial development, highly paid labour, cheap international transport, easy access of information due to telephone and the Internet. Other reasons include falling birth rates, rapid economic expansion, better job opportunities and more. Many people like to move to countries like United Kingdom, United State of America, Canada and many more simply because of the pull factors. The diagram below illustrates it better:

We have considered the various definitions of migration/relocation which can be internal, external, imposed, seasonal, chain, etc. We have also discussed types of migration and causes of migration which are push and pull factors. Thus, for an individual to decide to migrate, his or her reasons for doing so may be a combination of push and pull factors. However, it is important that before anyone migrates either for work or for any other reason, they should ensure not embarking on illegal processes. Disciples of Jesus should live by example by avoiding any form of impersonation or illegitimate route as it is common with some Nigerians in recent times. Above all, Christians should continue to pray for the restoration of our country, so that the rate of migration to other countries for greener pastures will reduce.
