Paul mentions Jesusโ descent into the โlower parts of the earthโ in ๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ. The passage reads, โNow this, โHe ascendedโโwhat does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all thingsโ (๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ:๐ตโ๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐ก๐๐๐ฉ). The meaning of โthe lower parts of the earthโ is open to various interpretations.
The focus of ๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ is unity in the body of Christ. To maintain unity and peace within the church, believers must โwalk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in loveโ (๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ:๐ญโ๐ฎ, ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ). After all, there is only โone body and one Spirit . . . one hope . . . one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of allโ (verses 4โ6, ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ).
The members of the church have received gifts from God: โTo each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned itโ (๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ:๐ณ). The spiritual gifts came following Christโs ascension into heaven: โWhen he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to menโ (verse 8, ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ). And the reason for the gifts is identified: โTo equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christโ (verse 12, ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ).
The implication of Jesusโ ascension into heaven is โthat He also first descended into the lower parts of the earthโ (๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ:๐ต, ๐ก๐๐๐ฉ). Where exactly did Christ descend?
The ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ translation of ๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ:๐ต identifies โthe lower regionsโ as โthe earth.โ The ๐ก๐๐ง arrives at the same conclusion, saying that Jesus โdescended to our lowly world.โ The ๐ก๐๐ฉ follows suit, saying that Jesus came to โthe lower, earthly regions.โ So, the incarnation of Christ is His โdescentโโHe came down from heaven to dwell among us (๐๐ฒ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐ต๐ป ๐ญ:๐ญ, ๐ญ๐ฐ). But some other interpreters suggest that, after Christ was crucified, He descended into Sheol, Hades, or hell. Those who hold this view often cite ๐ญ ๐ฃ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฏ:๐ญ๐ดโ๐ญ๐ต as a supporting passage.
Based on the context of ๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ:๐ต, the descent of Christ likely refers to His incarnation. Christ left heaven and descended to the โlower regionsโ (i.e., to the earth). Why did Christ descend? He descended โnot to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for manyโ (๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ:๐ฎ๐ด, ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ). His descent was complete and utterly humble: the King of kings was laid in a manger, and He spent His life with โno place to lay his headโ (๐ ๐ฎ๐๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ ๐ด:๐ฎ๐ฌ).
After His earthly work was done, Jesus ascended back into heaven, and He distributed spiritual gifts to His church. Paul says that Christ โgave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christโ (๐๐ฝ๐ต๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ:๐ญ๐ญโ๐ญ๐ฎ, ๐๐ฆ๐ฉ). Now Jesus is โat the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heavenโ (๐๐ฒ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ ๐ด:๐ญ). Having humbled Himself in descending to the lower parts of the earth, God has exalted Him to the highest place forever (๐ฃ๐ต๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐ฎ:๐ต).
