RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDENT'S MANUAL

LESSON NINETEEN
SUNDAY, 7TH JANUARY 2017

TOPIC: GAMBLING

MEMORY VERSE:

‘’Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." - Hebrews 13:5

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1Timothy 6:6-12

INTRODUCTION:

The word gamble means "to risk something of value on an outcome that depends on chance". Other related activities to gambling are betting, lotto/lottery, gaming, casinos, 'money doubling' and 'get rich quick' programmes, among others. Because the outcomes of these activities "depend on chance" and doing them involves "risk", then, by definition, they are all gambling. Although, the Bible does not specifically condemn gambling, betting, or the lottery, it does warn us, however, to stay away from the love of money (1Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5). Scripture also encourages us to stay away from attempts to "get rich quick" (Proverbs 13:11; 23:5; Ecclesiastes 5:10). Gambling most definitely is focused on the love of money and undeniably tempts people with the promise of quick and easy riches. Jesus warns us against letting riches get in the way of our spiritual benefit (Mark 4:19; 10:25) and that we cannot serve both God and money (Luke 16:13).

LESSON OUTLINES

1. Instances of gambling in the bible

2. Reasons for gambling and its consequences

3. Biblical counsel for believers

INSTANCES OF GAMBLING IN THE BIBLE

The Bible contains instances of gambling: Samson's bet in Judges 14:12-13 and the soldiers' gambling over Jesus' garments in John 19:24. In neither case is gambling presented in a good light. It also mentions events of "luck" or "chance" and instances of lottery. As an example, casting lots was used in Leviticus to choose between the sacrificial goat and the scapegoat (Leviticus 16:8). Joshua cast lots to determine the allotment of land to the various tribe (Joshua 18:10). Nehemiah cast lots to determine who would live inside the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 10:34). The apostles cast lots to determine the replacement for Judas (Acts 1:26). However, Proverbs 16:33 emphasizes the sovereignty of God: "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD". Hence, the biblical purpose of casting lots was not to test one's luck or to gain material wealth.

REASONS FOR GAMBLING AND ITS CONSEQUENCES

1. One of the world's lies is that money is the answer to life's problems. People are lured into playing lottery with promises that their lives will improve if they can only hit the jackpot. If they can just get lucky with the numbers, their problems will disappear. Such hopes are empty (Ecclesiastes 5:10-15).

2. Gamblers, including players of lottery, typically covet money and the things that money can buy. God forbids covetousness (Exodus 20:17; 1Timothy 6:10).

3. Playing lottery as a get-rich-quick scheme is statistically futile, and it focuses the lottery player on the temporary riches of this world (Proverbs 23:5).

4. The main purpose of gambling/lottery is to win money, and the Bible tells us what our attitude toward money should be (1Timothy 6:10). Studies show that the vast majority of lottery winners are in an even worse financial situation a few years after winning a jackpot than they were before.

5. The allure of "getting rich quick" is too great a temptation to resist for those who are desperate. The chances of winning are infinitesimal, which results in many peoples' lives being ruined (1Timothy 6:9; Proverbs 1:32).

BIBLICAL COUNSEL FOR BELIEVERS

1. God wants His people to prosper (Psalm 35:27; 3John 2) and to earn their money honestly by working hard (2Thessalonians 3:10). We ought to gain wealth through diligence, as a gift from the Lord: "Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth" (Proverbs 10:4).

2. Jesus teaches, "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money (Luke 16:13). Do not join the multitude to do evil (Exodus 23:2).

3. In 1Timothy 6:10, we find the famous warning that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Proceeds from gambling/lottery/betting do not please God (Proverbs 13:11). God is sovereign and will provide for the needs of the church through honest means.

4. Money and material wealth should not be the primary pursuit of a believer, rather it should be the kingdom of God and righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

5. Money should not be wasted. Excess money should be saved for future needs or given to the needy and the Lord's work, not gambled away (Proverbs 19:17; Exodus 35:5).

CONCLUSION:

We must guard our hearts against greed and covetousness (Proverbs 1:17-19).

QUESTIONS

1. Why do people gamble?

2. Mention some biblical instances of lottery and the purpose.

3. What counsel does the Bible give to believers on gambling?

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: SUNDAY 7TH JANUARY 2018

THEME: REDEEMED FOR DIVINE PROMOTION

Memorise:

Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: Colossians 1:13.

Read: Psalm 75:5-7

5. Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.

6. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.

7. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

Message:

“ The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
For you to reap the full benefits of the abundant life that Jesus Christ came to give, you need to understand the character of this life. Many children of God short-change themselves because they do not know that the redemption which Jesus Christ earned for us through His Blood is an all-round redemption that touches every aspect of our lives (Colossians 1:14,20). For example, not only did He redeem us from the power of sin, He also translated us to become citizens of God’s Kingdom. As Kingdom citizens, we are lifted above principalities and powers of this world. The Holy Spirit makes this truth clear through these verses of the Scripture:

“Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:” Ephesians 1:20-21

“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” Ephesians 2:6

The implication of this is that the devil should no longer dominate, buffet or torment us anymore because we are no longer under his feet, where sin had previously kept us. We have been bought with a price that frees us from the tyrant master (1 Corinthians 7:23, Hebrews 2:14). We are divinely promoted as kings and priests, as declared in Revelation 5:10:

“And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”

We are redeemed and promoted above sorrow, poverty, sickness and every form of oppression of the devil. Beloved, learn to celebrate and enforce the divine promotion you have obtained through redemption. Moreover, if you desire promotion in any facet of life, our text tell us that only God promotes. Therefore, put your trust in God, and your promotion will manifest sooner rather than later, and it will be beyond your wildest imagination in Jesus’ Name.

Action Point:

Spend some quality time to celebrate your divine promotion by rendering high praises to God.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: THURSDAY 4TH JANUARY 2018

THEME: ONLY BELIEVE

MEMORISE:
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:18

READ: Romans 8:31-39

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

MESSAGE

Whenever I ruminate over the many-sided blessings embedded in the Good News that came through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, my heart is filled with great joy. I equally find it fascinating that no elaborate process involving complexities is required for us to access these blessings. Jesus did the hard work and made things simple for us. One of such blessings is freedom from condemnation. The righteous judgment of God against sin has brought all of mankind under condemnation. This is the reason why no man can escape the pain of guilt that results from sin, or the consequences that follow it. Romans 3:23 says,
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,”

Romans 6:23 further says,
“For the wages of sin is death,”

However, the Good News is that Jesus Christ gives us freedom from the condemnation that had put a seal on the destiny of all mankind. In Romans 8:1, this Good News says,

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Those who are in Christ Jesus can now live a life free from guilt of sin or the feeling of inadequacy resulting from past misdeeds. Their conscience is liberated from condemnation because they know their sins have been washed away by the precious blood of Jesus (Revelation 1:5). What does it take to access this blessings of freedom? Only Believe! Believe in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ, believe He is who He says He is, and believe in the work of salvation He has completed. How do you know you truly believe all these? When your actions and confessions reflect what you claim to believe, that is when you truly believe.

Another blessing of the Good News that you can have access to by faith is the truth that Jesus Christ, though rich, became poor, so that through His poverty, you might be rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). Your faith in this article of the Good News will prevent you from doing diabolical or criminal things to get rich, because you know that your prosperity lies in the sacrificial life that the Master has lived. Believing in the words and works of Jesus gives us contentment, the absence of which brings many sorrows to those who want to be rich by any means (1 Timothy 6:6-10). Beloved, do you believe all these? If you do, live your life by the ideas of the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will forever be free from condemnation, now and in eternity.

PRAYER POINT:
Father, please help me to live according to Your will, so that I may not be condemned with this world. Grant me grace not to lose sight of the words and works of Jesus. Amen.

HYMN 10: MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE

1. My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Saviour divine!
Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away,
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine!

2. May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire!
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be,
A living fire!

3. While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my guide;
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away,
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.

4.Whenlife’s swift race is run,
Death’s cold work almost done
Be near to me.
Blest Saviour, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove;
Oh, bear me safe above,
A ransomed soul!

THEME: THE OVERCOMERS!

MEMORISE:

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on The Name of The LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.” Joel 2:32

READ: Revelation 21:1-7

1. And I saw A New Heaven and A New Earth: for The First Heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2. And I John saw The Holy City, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of Heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3. And I heard A Great Voice out of Heaven saying, “Behold, The Tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His People, and God Himself shall be with them, and be Their God.

4. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5. And He that sat upon The Throne said, “Behold, I make all things new. And He said unto me, “Write: for These Words are True and Faithful.

6. And He said unto me, “It is done. I Am Alpha and Omega, The Beginning and The End. I will give unto him that is athirst of The Fountain of The Water of Life freely.

7. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be His God, and he shall be My Son.

MESSAGE

A. Since the advent of sin into this world, life has become a battle for mankind.
1. In the battle of life, one is either an overcomer or a victim.
2. My prayer for you is that you will live the rest of your life as an overcomer in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
3. Today’s memory verse expressly reveals to us the secret of overcoming in the battle of life: “…whosoever shall call on The Name of The Lord shall be delivered:”
4. However, The Truth in this verse of Scripture throws up this question: “How then shall they call on Him whom they have not believed?” Romans 10:14
5. Therefore, before you can overcome by calling on The Name of The Lord, you need to first believe in The Person of The Lord Jesus Christ and in His Finished Work on the cross of Calvary.
6. When you believe this and you confess so with your mouth, you become “born of God”.
7. Here is what the Bible, in 1 John 5:4-5, says about those who are born of God: “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?”

B. Living the reality of being an overcomer in this world.
1. Means that you daily experience the victory that Christ has obtained for you over the enemies of your body, soul and spirit.
2. It means living your life everyday as having been delivered from the power of sin, and when you overcome sin, you have invariably overcome death, which is at the pinnacle of the battle of life.
3. James 1:15 says, “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”

C. Are you under any siege in the battle of life?
1. Has life dealt you so many blows that you do not have the will to go on?
2. Don’t give in to depression, and don’t contemplate su***de.
3. This is a great time for you to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, through genuine repentance.
4. In prayer, call upon the Name of Him That is able to save, and you will overcome!
5. Are you saved but still living under the shackles of this world?
6. It is time to realise who you are, shake yourself up from the dust of pity and begin to enforce the victory that Christ has won for you!

ACTION POINT:

Call on the Name of the Lord convening any area of life where you have been experiencing defeat.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE : TUESDAY 2ND JANUARY 2018

THEME : COME WITH US!

Memorise:

And he said, My Presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. Exodus 33:14

Read : Exodus 33:12-17

12.And Moses said unto The LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and Thou hast not let me know whom Thou wilt send with me. Yet Thou hast said, I know thee by name, and Thou hast also found grace in My Might.

13 Now therefore, I pray Thee, if I have found grace in Thy Sight, shew me now Thy Way, that I may know Thee, that I may find grace in Thy Sight: and consider that this nation is Thy People.

14 And He said, My Presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

15.And he said unto him, If Thy Presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.

16. For wherein shall it be known here that I and Thy People have found grace in Thy Sight? Is it not in that Thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and Thy People, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.

17.And The LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in My Sight, and I know thee by name.

Message

A. Only a fool would think that he or she can exist independent of God, Who is The Maker of The Heavens and The Earth and all that is in them (Romans 1:20-22).
1. Moses, the servant of God, knew this and he consequently did not make the mistake of doing anything without God’s Approval.
2. In today’s Bible reading, he insisted on The Presence of God going with them as they journeyed through the wilderness to The Promised Land.
3. There is this story of three fishes in the sea living under the threat of sharks.
4. They went to The Almighty God to ask for help concerning the danger of death looming over them.
5. The first fish asked God for many eyes so that it could see sharks approaching from any direction and escape to safety.
6. The second fish demanded for wings so that it could fly away from the reach of sharks whenever they came after it.
7. The third fish only asked for The presence of The Almighty God wherever it went.
8. The Lord granted all their requests, and they swam away happily.
9. Not long after, sharks came after the first fish, and immediately with its many eyes, it saw them coming!
10. It took a jump into a nearby pond where the sharks could not go and began to laugh at the sharks.
11. However, the water in the pond soon began to dry up and this fish died.
12. The second fish also saw sharks coming for it, because it had been granted wings, it flew like a bird out of the water, but only to be caught in the air by an eagle flying by.
13. So, the second fish ended up in the stomach of an eagle, which was happily surprised to have a delicious fish as its mid-flight meal.
14. In contrast to these, the third fish, which had wisely requested The presence of The Lord, went swimming about without any fear of death from ferocious sharks.
15. And It was basking in the protection that comes with carrying the presence of the Lord.
16. When the mother-shark would not go after it, the baby-shark asked its mother, “Why don’t we eat this beautiful fish?”
17. The mother-shark cautioned it against entertaining such ideas, pointing to the shadow of The Almighty God following the fish everywhere.

B. Beloved, all that you need to succeed and have breakthroughs this year is God’s Presence in your life.
1. I therefore encourage you to give your life totally to God through Jesus Christ.
2. For His Presence to envelope your life, you need to walk daily with Him by fellowshipping with Him in the place of prayer and worship, and by framing your every thought around His Word.
3. If you are faithful in doing this, He will abide with you, and you will live in safety throughout this year and beyond (Psalm 91:1-2).

Key Point:

The God that creates is the One that prospers, and He is the One that protects. Seek and ask for His Presence in all that you do from today.

“Bless The Lord, O my Soul, and forget not all His Benefits:” Psalm 103:2

Read : Psalm 150:1-6

1: Praise ye The Lord. Praise God in His Sanctuary:

2: Praise Him in the firmament of His Power. Praise Him for His Mighty Acts: Praise Him according to his excellent greatness.

3: Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet: Praise Him with the psaltery and harp.

4: Praise Him with the timbrel and dance: Praise Him with stringed instruments and organs.

5: Praise Him upon the loud cymbals: Praise Him upon the high sounding cymbals.

6: Let every thing that hath breath Praise The Lord. Praise ye The Lord. HALLELUJAH!!!

Message:

A. King Hezekiah declared a profound truth when he testified that only The Living can Praise e Lord ( Isaiah 38:19 ).
1. Children of God, as living spirits, we have many reasons to be thankful for.
2. Whenever I consider The Lovingkindness of God and His Tender Mercies, demonstrated through His Protection, His Providence, His Love, His Forgiveness, His Healing, His Good Health and, above all else, His Salvation of the soul, I always come to the conclusion that indeed The Lord has been Very Gracious to His children.
3. No wonder The Holy Spirit, in Psalm 150:2, succinctly instructs us to “Praise Him for His Mighty Acts: Praise Him according to His Excellent Greatness.”
4. This is so important that in Psalm 103:1-5, David counsels His own soul to Bless The Lord in thanksgiving, admonishing himself not to forget any one of God’s Benefits.
5. In other words, there is tendency for us to forget all that The Lord has done for us.
6. Nevertheless, we have no reason to be ungrateful to God, because His Goodness forever flows to us.
7. Prophet Jeremiah testifies of this truth in Lamentations 3:22-23, saying: “It is of the Lord’s Mercies that we are not consumed, because His Compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

B. Moreover, what is our joy as children of God?
1. It is the assurance of better tomorrow: the assurance of better year ahead of us.
2. Only those who are saved by The Grace that is in Christ Jesus have this assurance.
3. Declaring this assurance, The Holy Spirit in Isaiah 3:10 says, “Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. “
4. Who is the righteous? The righteous is the one who has accepted Jesus Christ as his or her personal Lord and Saviour.
5. The righteousness of Christ is bestowed upon such person because they believe and have appropriated the ransom paid on their behalf by the Lord Jesus Christ, The Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world ( John 1:29 ).
6. God is saying to you that you should be grateful to Him for all He has done for you in the past, particularly in the just concluded year .
7. If you remain thankful, your tank of blessings shall be full as you go into The New Year.
8. However, not giving your life to The One Who paid The Supreme Price for your Salvation is the greatest form of ingratitude.
9. Therefore, repent and give your life to Christ today!
10. He will be your Shepherd and you shall want nothing throughout the New Year and in the years to come. Hallelujah!

Action point:

Thank the Lord for all His Godness and Mercies over your life in the past; give your life to Him afresh and renew your commitment to serve Him in Holiness and Perfect Obedience in this New Year.

A. King Solomon is considered to be the wisest king that ever lived.
How did he become so wise?
1. When God gave Him a blank cheque to ask for anything, in 1 Kings 3:9, he said: “Give therefore Thy Servant an understanding heart to judge Thy People, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this Thy So great A People?”
2. He chose to ask for something that the average person of his time would consider inconsequential: Wisdom.
3. Solomon feared that he might misrule God’s People and thereby incur God’s Wrath, and so he asked God for wisdom.
4. Indeed, in Proverbs 9:10, he later wrote: “The fear of The Lord is The Beginning of Wisdom: and The Knowledge of The Holy is Understanding.”
5. It is unfortunate to discover that even among some Children of God today, The Fear of The Lord is greatly absent.
6. This accounts for the level of character erosion that is being witnessed in The Church, so much so that even pastors are being caught in various acts of sin, such as sexual immorality.
7. Joseph was repeatedly tempted and pressured to commit sexual immorality, but he vehemently refused to indulge in it, despite the fact that it was offered to him on a platter of gold.
8. The Bible in Genesis 39:8-9 gives this account of Joseph’s steadfastness: “But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

B. If you ask me what kept Joseph away from this sexual immorality, I will tell you that it was Wisdom, brought about by The Fear of The Lord.
1. How I wish all of God’s Children would embrace The Fear of God, so that they can begin to live in Wisdom.
2. It is Wisdom to run away from sin, because the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).
3. A foolish fellow would say, “Death will come one day all the same”.
4. Such a fellow fails to consider untimely death like the one that took Absalom away (2 Samuel 18:10-17).
5. The agony of death that comes as a result of sin, and the eternal death in the Lake of Fire.
6. Revelation 21:8 speaks of the Lake of Fire in these words: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
7. For this reason, our Bible reading strongly recommends that we get wisdom.
8. The question is, where can we get wisdom?
9. It is from the word of God (2 timothy 3:15).
10. Beloved, seek Godly Wisdom and don’t be lawless in the name of grace, because grace does not indulge in lawlessness.

Father, Please put Your Fear in me, help me love Your Word and give me Wisdom in Jesus' Name. Amen!

HYMN: IT'S SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS!

1. ’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His word;
Just to rest upon His promise;
Just to know, Thus saith the Lord.
Refrain:
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him,
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er,
Jesus, Jesus, Precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more.

2. O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust His cleansing blood;
Just in simple faith to plunge me,
’Neath the healing, cleansing flood.

Refrain:

3. Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life, and rest, and joy, and peace.

Refrain:

4. I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

Refrain:
