One Sunday, as I was preparing for church, I realized I did not have any cash with me for my offering. While searching through the wardrobe, my hand brushed against something in my husband’s pocket. When I checked, I discovered it was money. Without thinking much, I took ₦5,500 and went into the bathroom to finish getting ready.
While I was there, I felt a strong conviction in my heart: “So, you want to give Me an offering with money you took without permission, money you stole!!?”
I immediately began to justify myself. After all, it was my husband’s money — and what belongs to him belongs to me, right? Yet the inner prompting would not go away. The more I tried to reason it out, the more uneasy I felt.
Finally, I returned the ₦5,500 to his pocket and went back to getting ready. Still, another thought came: “Was that necessary? The money is practically yours anyway.” I wrestled briefly with the idea, but just then my husband walked into the room, and the moment passed.
Fast forward to church. As we were about to step out of the car, my husband asked whether the children had their offering. He reached into his pocket and gave them money. Then he turned to me and asked if I had mine. I said no.
To my surprise, he handed me exactly ₦5,500 — for my offering and anything else I might need.
I was stunned. I immediately told him what had happened earlier that morning. In that moment, I reflected deeply on integrity and obedience. I realized how troubled my conscience would have been if I had kept the money without his knowledge. Worse still, if he had later discovered it, it could have created unnecessary distrust between us.
That experience reminded me that integrity matters — even in the smallest, seemingly insignificant moments. Doing the right thing may feel inconvenient at first, but obedience brings peace, and integrity preserves trust.
Sometimes, the real test is not about the money. It is about the heart.
And when we choose to do what is right, God has a way of honoring that decision in ways that surprise us.
