FAITH LIKE A MUSTARD SEED

TEXT: MATTHEW 17:14-20

KEY VERSE: "And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you" (Matthew 17:20).

Jesus taught that even a small amount of faith can do amazing things. A mustard seed is tiny, but it grows into a big tree. Similarly, when we trust God, even with a small amount of faith, He will do great things in and through us.

Imagine a big aircraft that moves in the air, the instrument that controls the movement of the aircraft is a tiny button in the cockpit of the plane. All a pilot needs do is to press the button, and up will go the mighty aircraft. It is the same with cars, luxurious buses and even trains. The size of the controls is so incomparable to the size of the locomotive. This illustration is to show us that it is the same in the spiritual realm. We only need a tiny spark of faith to move big mountains. Faith in God and His word is all that we need to accomplish great things. To develop your "mustard seed faith," you must spend quality time to read God's word, think on the message, believe it and put it into practice.

PRAYER: God, I trust You can do all things. Help me to grow in my faith daily.

THE ENTRY TICKET

KEY VERSE: "Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (HEBREWS 12:14).

BIBLE TEXT: HEBREWS 12:12-17

There are historical Landmarks and Museums around the world that are impenetrable without entry tickets; the prominent ones are: The Louvre Museum (Paris, France); The British Museum (London, UK); The Acropolis of Athens (Greece); The Colosseum (Rome, Italy); The Yellowstone National Park (USA); The Serengeti National Park (Tanzania); The Kakadu National Park (Australia); The Disneyland (California, USA); amongst others. The entry tickets do not come cheap; they come with a price tag. In the same vein, Heaven, God's abode, requires a ticket. "Holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14).

Thinking of entry into heaven with your good works or religion or wealth, amounts to self-deceit. Jesus Christ is the Gate-Pass. Acts 10:43 says, “To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins". As a youth, ensure you secure the valid ticket through genuine salvation and always live a holy life with heaven in view. Strive to enter! If you are sure of your entry ticket. You should be concerned about the sinful state of your loved ones.

PRAYER: Dear Jesus, I surrender to your Lordship for my entry ticket.

CHALLENGE: Strive to enter heaven.

QUOTE: Secure the valid ticket

SUPREMACY OF GOD OVER DAGON

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 5:1-5

KEY VERSE: "And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him" (1 SAMUEL 5:4).

Reverend James Johnson, a prominent Anglican clergyman, identified idolatry as a significant obstacle to the spread of Christianity in parts of West Africa, in the 1880s. In his biography, Holy Johnson, he lamented, "It is not easy work to root out heathenism from the minds of our people; at the sound of every heathen drum they seem to think fondly of olden days."

In our text, the Philistines defeated Israel, captured the ark of the Lord, the symbol of God's presence in Israel, placed the ark next to the image of Dagon to demonstrate the supposed superiority of Dagon over Jehovah. Similarly, Dagon was the chief idol in Mesopotamia at the time. It was variously worshipped as the god of fertility, protection god and their creator. The expectation of the Philistines and the symbolism was reversed when Dagon was toppled, and its hands were cut off, thus illustrating the inability of idols to create or save.

Today, people worship idols in various forms. These idols are not restricted to carved images or statues. As Ed Stetzer, an American expert on mission studies, observed, idolatry exists whenever we look to someone or something in the world around us to save or satisfy us. Another great man of God declared, "If you love anything better than God, you are an idolater; If there is anything you would not give up for God, it is your idol; If there is anything you seek with greater fervour than you seek the glory of God, that is your idol, and conversion means turning from every idol."

Although mankind has always been tempted to place idols on the same pedestal as Almighty God, yet, the Lord will always prove His supremacy. God declares, "I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Vain religions produce counterfeit gods.

SPIRITUAL LEPROSY

KEY VERSE: “And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.” (LUKE 5:13)

BIBLE TEXT: LUKE 5:12-15

Leprosy in the Bible was not just a physical disease; it was also a symbol of sin and its destructive power. Leprosy separated people from society and from worship in the temple. It was a slow and deadly disease, just like sin destroys lives spiritually. Those who had leprosy were considered unclean and needed divine intervention.

Just as physical leprosy affects the body, spiritual leprosy affects the soul. It is a condition of being spiritually infected by sin, leading to separation from God. Leprosy starts as a small spot and spreads, so also sin begins in a small way but grows if not stopped. Leprosy isolates people from society, just as sin isolates us from God's presence. The consequence of spiritual leprosy is spiritual death as it brings divine judgment.

As Jesus showed His compassionate nature in healing lepers, so also does He possess the power to heal your spiritual leprosy. All you need do is to acknowledge your spiritual condition, cry out to God for mercy. Ask Him to forgive and cleanse your soul with the blood of Jesus, never go back to sin anymore. You have an opportunity today, do not delay. The cure to spiritual leprosy is found only in Jesus.

PRAYER: Lord, take away any form of spiritual leprosy in my life and make me clean.

THE HYPOCRITE

KEY VERSE: “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things” (Romans 2:1).

BIBLE TEXT: ROMANS 2:1-11

A writer stated that, “The greatest hypocrisy is to pretend to be something you are not.” Let’s look at a hypocrite in two ways. One, he is someone who says the opposite of who he is. For example, if he is contesting for an elective post in a school, he could tell the electorate that he is trustworthy and a man of integrity. But no sooner he gets to office than he begins to show his true character of corruption and all kinds of vices. Two, Paul calls the hypocrite one who judges others for what he is equally guilty of - a sinner who condemns other sinners.

Therefore, before judging others, examine yourself if you have “clean hands, and a pure heart.” Remember, when we judge others, while we are guilty of the same sins, we condemn ourselves (Romans 2:1-3). God judges us based on our actions, and not by appearance and self-justification (Romans 2:6-11). Youths who seek to be justified by God should first acknowledge their sins and repent. Jesus condemns all forms of hypocrisy (Matthew 7:3-5; 23:25-28).

PRAYER: Dear Father, help me live above hypocrisy, in Jesus’ name.

CHALLENGE: Avoid the pitfall of hypocrisy.
