BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE
MISSIONS
(Matt 9:37-10:8; Matt 28:18-20, Mark 5:18-20, Luke 10:1-9)
In Luke’s account of the gospel, chapter 10 verse 1, Jesus apart from sending out the 12 disciples (Matt 10:1) sent another 70 on a missions assignment. Missions for expanding God’s kingdom are central to the full restoration of this world and the reconciliation of God and man. Without missions, only a minority of the human population will know of divinely arranged provisions for living fruitful and victorious lives. As children of God, we need to look again closely at this mandate of missions God gave the church. May the Lord bless you as you pay attention to His Word.

What are Missions all about?
Missions are popularly known as travelling far from one’s home to preach the gospel to people of different languages and customs for several years; giving up one’s job or vocation and possibly not returning to one’s home until one dies. A closer look at scripture says something slightly different. Missions, from the perspective of scripture however require you to get out of your comfort zones to preach the gospel. Here are some things that going on a kingdom oriented mission involves.
• Kingdom oriented missions involves carrying a message/preaching to others who don’t yet know about -the kingdom of God- Matt 10:7, Luke 10:9
-All things Jesus taught you- Matt 28:20
- All things that God has done for you- Mark 5:19
• Kingdom oriented missions involves exercising your God given power and authority to
-heal the sick – Luke 10: 9, Matt 10: 1, 8
-baptize unto repentance – Matt 28:19
-cleanse lepers, raise the dead and cast out demons – Matt 10: 1, 8

Who can go for kingdom missions?
• Jesus disciples- Matt 10:1,5-7; Luke 10:1
• Those who have received a miracle from Jesus- Mark 5:18-19
• All those who believe in His name- Mark 16: 15-18
To which category do you belong?

Where do we go on Kingdom missions?
To our family and friends- Mark 5:18-19
To cities and villages around us- Matt 9:35
To all (ethnic) nations of the earth- Matt 28:19, Mark16:15

Discuss the following:
• Can you share any experience of going on missions that you know of?
• Can you identify some challenges that stop us from going on missions? (e.g. I don’t know the language; I’m too busy; I have no money to go; I can’t heal the sick)
• How do we overcome these challenges?

Going on missions is the major assignment from our Lord and Saviour Jesus that will hasten His return – Matt 24:14; Luke 24:47. We cannot afford to reduce its importance hence more attention has to be given to this assignment. We shall surely receive the Master’s approval as we carry out more kingdom missions.

BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE
HOSPITALITY (Heb 13:2, Rom 12:6-13)

In Acts 6: 1-7, the bible records that there were problems in the church that bordered on hospitality. Some church members felt left out of the care and concern that came from the leaders. After this problem was solved, the church recorded significant growth. In many other scriptural examples, the act of hospitality has brought remarkable blessings to the host/hostess. Paul the apostle in Romans 12: 6- 13 places hospitality as part of our ministry work and Hebrews 13:2 also encourages the same, emphasizing that angelic visitation can result from such acts. Let us revisit this aspect of our Christian walk, not just for the benefit but as part of our service to the Master. Have a blessed study.

What is Hospitality?
To be hospitable means to be generous or kind and cordial to strangers or guests. There are many examples of hospitality in scriptures and we will be looking at some of them to refresh our minds about this aspect of ministry.
• Abraham and the 3 Guests – Genesis 18: 1-6, 9-15
• Lot entertains angels – Genesis 19: 1-3, 12-17, 21
• Elisha and the Shunamite woman – 2Kings 4: 8-17
• Cornelius – Acts 10: 1-6
• Hospitality in the early church – Acts 6:1-7

Discuss the following points
• What are the similarities in these stories?
• What are the qualities of people who showed/ can show hospitality?
• In which way did these acts of hospitality glorify God?
• Were the hosts/hostesses rewarded for their hospitality?
• In our world today, there are a lot of deceitful “strangers” who bring harm rather than good to those who are hospitable to them (give examples if you know of any). How do we handle such if we are to remain hospitable as the bible encourages?

Being hospitable brings God’s blessings and reveals God’s glory in our lives. And it takes a Christian who wants to serve God, who is prayerful and Holy Spirit led to be hospitable. Hospitality also helps our churches to grow; when unbelievers experience the love of God through our hospitality, they want to remain in and become part of the church. Let us strive to be hospitable. God Bless You.

7 LETTERS FOR 7 CHURCHES; Revelations 1-3
Having looked closely at the letters to the seven churches in Asia minor and the various reasons for rebukes and commendations received by each of the churches, there are a lot of salient lessons we can learn from this exercise. Today’s study is to put together some of those lessons and the way they apply to us today. One thing is quite instructive in all of the discussions Jesus had with the various churches, “he who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches”. Those churches spoken of include the churches today. Be sensitive in the spirit as we go through today’s study.

Epilogue- Lessons from the Letters
Lessons to be learned from each of the letters to the 7 churches includes the points listed below
• Don’t allow your love for Jesus to become cold- Rev 2:4. Compare Matt 10:10-22, Matt 24: 8-13.
• Don’t tolerate the teachings of “Jezebel”, “the Nicolaitans” or “Baalam”. What do they teach? –
o Sexual immorality is ok- Rev 2: 6, 14-15
o Eat food sacrificed to idols, there’s nothing wrong with it!- Rev 2: 20-21
o The important thing about “food sacrificed to idols” is that the damage is not felt by the one eating but on other brethren whose faith/consciences are not as strong ICor 8: 4-9.
• Wealth, fame, skill or wisdom by themselves cannot save you, you still need God. Rev 3:17-18. You were made to function as part of God not apart from Him John 15:1-6.
• Your decision to follow and serve Christ should be based on conviction not on circumstances- Rev 2:9-10, 13, 24-25. However expect persecution, trials and challenges to your decision- John 15:18-21, Luke 9:62.
• Serve God with faith, patience, perseverance and righteousness Rev 2:3, 10, 24-25, Rev 3:4, 10-11.
• There will be fake Christians and pretenders in church posing as real Christians- Rev 2: 2, 9, Rev 3: 9.

Aside from the above lesson points, these other issues are of similar importance.
1. As serious as the issues of rebuke raised were, Jesus always emphasized repentance- Rev 2:5, 16, Rev 3: 19. Any teaching that speaks of only punishment, damnation and no room for repentance is most likely not from God- Rev 3: 19, I John 1: 7-9.
Have you come cross any teaching like this? Discuss
2. Notice that every letter Jesus said “he that has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches” Rev 2:7, 11, 17, 29, Rev 3:6, 13. We should learn from both the successes and failures of other churches- II Cor 1: 3-6.
Discuss- Which of these rebukes or commendations do you think applies to our church?

7 LETTERS FOR 7 CHURCHES; Revelations 1-3
This is Jesus’ letter to the 7th church Asia minor. It is instructive that this letter contains no commendation at all for the Laodicean church. In this case, the church has a different kind of immaturity; the mindset that they are self-sufficient or “spiritually independent”. This state is unattractive to their saviour and (I would like to add) men also. God never designed us to be independent of Him Gen 2:22-23; neither did Christ ever claim independence from the Father. Let us gather a little knowledge from the Laodecian church in this part of our walk. Have an fruitful study.

Letter for the Church at Laodecia –Rev 3: 14-22
Laodecia was located 64km South East of Philadelphia and 144km East of Ephesus. Epaphras, the bishop of the church at Colossae also related closely with this church; Col 1:7, Col 4:12-13. It was known as a very wealthy city. So wealthy that it refused the financial assistance of Rome when an earthquake destroyed it in AD60 but rebuilt the city entirely from its own internally generated revenue. The city was known for several things, one for its soft and glossy black wool, its strategic banking facilities and its medical school. The medical school had a famous eye salve (Phrygian powder) and an ear balm. The water supply to the city was brought through six miles of water channels/aqueducts which delivered “lukewarm” water. All these were used as illustrations in Jesus’ rebuke of the church.

• Jesus here introduces Himself as “the Amen and the faithful witness; the beginning of all creation”. Compare John 1:1-3, Rev 19:11.
• This state of “spiritual independence” was emphasized and depicted using major things the city was known for
o Luke warmness- Luke warmness can be described as a kind of defiance or a refusal to conform to established standards –Rev 3:14-16, Rom 12:1-2. Luke warmness makes you unattractive to God.
o Wealth- When a person is wealthy and his confidence is in his wealth, such a person becomes unattractive to God Rev 3:17-18. Consider the rich fool- Luke 12:16-21, the rich young ruler- Matt 19:16-24. The bible encourages us to be rich towards God (Luke 12:21).
o Insight/ Revelation Knowledge- This could be described as having solutions to a lack of understanding in spiritual matters (or even in physical things) and not wanting to learn/gain form the wisdom of others, possibly even possessing an attitude of superiority Rev 3:17-18 (Laodecia was known in the physical to have solutions to peoples’ eye problems). This mindset also makes one unattractive to God
o Discuss- How can we know if a person’s confidence is in God (or in himself) when such a person obviously has skills/abilities to solve problems. Consider Gen 40:5-8, Gen 41:14-25

• Jesus never declared independence from the Father and just like Him we mustn’t take a stand of “spiritual independence” from God. We were not created to be. Consider John 5:19-23, John 14:9-11, 19-21. We must remain dependent on Him for so it makes us fruitful and attractive to Him
