𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗔𝗡 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗚𝗢𝗗

𝘼 𝙜𝙤𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙡 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝙥𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝘾𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙝

“MOSES drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.” In the thick darkness, God will try you. He will draw you through places of trial at times, and you will know wherein your faith stands—whether in feeling, in your leader, in your neighbors, or in God. Your confidence must be in God.

How easy it is for people to lean upon the arm of flesh! But faith steps out alone, and leans upon One you have never seen perhaps never heard His audible voice speaking to you. You must step out into open space, as it were, and trust God to bring you through. It is a wonderful thing for God to come so near to the human heart as to cause you to trust in Him when you cannot see Him, but you can feel Him; and even when the feeling is removed, faith will leap out into the dark and say, “If I perish, I perish, but I will go in before the King and make my request.”

It is a wonderful thing to have unbounded confidence and implicit faith in God, who lets you look beyond the natural and see the spiritual, the things that are eternal. After all, the natural is weak, the arm of flesh often fails. You may prefer to call the best physicians and consult with them in time of sickness, when your child is lying at the point of death, but God has led us into the marvelous Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and taught us to trust the greatest Physician, the One who healed all who came unto Him, and will do the same today. Thank God for the Gospel that brings into the soul the faith and confidence, trust and hope, that nothing can shake.

𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗱

When David, the king of Israel, had sinned against God, and was given the choice of falling into the hands of his enemies or being visited with pestilence, he said: “Let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.” He knew that he could pray and sacrifice to God, and God's mercy would be extended to him.

Thank God, He had a people then, and He has a people today, who choose rather to be in the hand of God than in the hand of man. They belong to the great God of Heaven. Many will lean on the arm of flesh, trust their cases in the hands of man, and expect to get more mercy from that source than from God; but the Word says, “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD” (Jeremiah 17:5).

A young man who was saved in the Apostolic Faith had confessions to make that would have caused him to spend his lifetime behind the bars, but he was willing to face the penitentiary walls that he might get right with God. We told him to trust in God, not to look to the judges, the cold steel of law and justice of the world, but to look beyond to the great God of Heaven, and make his confessions according to God's demands upon his life. God went before him and delivered him. They forgave him and he became a free man.

David went up to the mountain, to the place where the Temple afterward was built, to make an offering to God. Ornan offered to give him the threshing floor and the oxen for a burnt offering; but David said, “I will verily buy it for the full price; for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost” (I Chronicles 21:24). So he paid the full price of the floor and of the offering. If you make an offering to God, it must be a sacrifice which costs something. David sacrificed there unto the Lord, and the angel of the Lord put his sword into the sheath, and God answered by fire because of the covenant that David made with Him.

Jacob made a covenant with God at Bethel, where God first appeared unto him. As he lay that night upon a pillow of stone, he saw a ladder from earth to Heaven, and angels ascending and descending upon it. When he awoke he made a vow to God, and promised God that if He would bless him in his journey, he would give Him a tenth of all he possessed. God knew he would keep his vow, and that is why God blessed him so abundantly.

It means something to keep your sacrifice, your vows to God. It all belongs to Him in the first place. He says, “For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.” “Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High” (Psalm 50:10, 14). If you would pay your vows unto God and offer thanksgiving to Him, you would not be able to contain the blessings God would pour into your thirsty soul.

𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Consecrate your life daily to God. The people who have the most love for God in their hearts, the most hunger for the Word of God are the ones who are consecrating their lives daily. They are praying, “Search my life, try the reins of my heart, make me what You want me to be, make me ready when Jesus comes.” If you do not consecrate your life daily, you are missing the greatest blessing of your life. You cannot keep that sweet incense, that love for your brother, that precious, holy anointing that God Almighty drops down afresh in the morning, at noon, and night, unless you keep your sacrifice on the altar continuously.

God commands you to watch and pray and examine your heart. Your consecration for yesterday is not sufficient for today. You must live right in the bosom of His will. The sweetest, most sacred place on earth is in the center of the will of God, where you can cry day and night, “To know thy will is to do it!”

If you are truly consecrated to God, only to know His will is to do it gladly.

We must live close to God in order to know His will. It means a close walk with God; but if we will keep consecrated and keep our hearts open to God and in an attitude where God's will can be revealed, He will show us His will.

If you are in doubt, hold still before God until you do know. Do not be running to this one and that one, and asking God for a revelation or a vision; but just be still and let God deal with your heart and He will reveal the matter to you. It is a wonderful thing to be so in the hands of God that He can keep you still as well as lead you on. It was a hard thing for the Children of Israel to stand still and see the salvation of God when the Red Sea was before them and the armies behind them. God commands us to stand still, without murmuring. When you know God's Word, and yet the walls seem mountain high and you are surrounded by turmoil, set your face like a flint and stand true to God, and some day He will cause you to go through.

𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲

You will never get to the place in your Christian experience where you will be above temptation and trial. Jesus was tempted of the devil. He was a “man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.” We shall always be subject to temptation, but we can be more than conquerors through Him that loved us. “God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (I Corinthians 10:13).

You will be tempted and tried. Real Bible salvation will not always keep you on the mountaintop of feeling. Some may wonder why they cannot always feel the blessing. That is not according to God's Word, because the Bride of Christ is in her tribulation today, and the Word says, “The just shall live by faith” (Hebrew 10:33).

The tribulation of the world is coming after the Bride is taken away, but the tribulation of the saints of God is in their lives today. Many times you wonder why you shed tears and go through heart sufferings, your spirit being oppressed. God says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all” (Psalm 34:19). His Word declares that afflictions shall come to the child of God. He wants a people tested and tried, proved and made pure through suffering, through temptation and tribulation. He says, “I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction” (Isaiah 48:10).

We are living in the most awful age of the world. There never was a time with such privileges and opportunities; and yet there never was a time when the onslaughts of Satan were so great as today. You may not understand why it is you have times of tests and trials so strange; but we read, “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you” (1 Peter 4:12).

God would never have a perfect people if He did not try them. He must have a people, “purified, and made white, and tried.” It is easy when everything is coming our way and we feel the glory and the smile of Heaven, but that is not what makes a tried-out people. We must endure hardness, walk by faith, and pe*****te right through to the Throne of God by faith in Him.

We are going through the humiliation with Jesus Christ. But oh, to think that some day we shall rise with Him, and these vile bodies shall put on incorruption! We shall be like unto His glorious body. Some day the perfection of beauty will be seen on God's children, when “we shall see him as he is.”

He may lay you low; He will put you in the dust. But we read in the Word, “Every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.” We have found God's Word to be true. Oh, that we might get our hearts in an attitude before God to say, “I surrender, I lay my life at the foot of the Cross, an empty vessel; do what You will with me, but I will stand, I will be obedient to the 'heavenly vision”

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿

God wants His children to be a holy priesthood, that our prayers may ascend in behalf of a dying world. He wants intercessors at the Throne of God, that we might beat back the power of sin in the world today and rescue souls. God's people must prevail in prayer if souls are to be delivered from the power of the enemy. He has made us kings and priests unto the eternal God, that we might stand in the gap and make intercession for souls.

If you are born again, your prayers are worth everything and how much more after you are sanctified! It is then you become a priest of the living God, so separated from your own self and your own desires that you can go into the very presence of God and plead for a lost world. You need not be continually wrestling with God for your own self. You should be praying for others. There is an extreme love for souls that comes into your life at sanctification.

Jesus wept in tender love and pity for the lost, and His Spirit today makes us feel for the lost as He felt. The more you are filled with the Spirit, the more you are like Jesus. Self-enjoyment is lost sight of. You have fellowship with Him in His sufferings and in prayer and labors for souls; your highest enjoyment is seeing some poor sinner brought to the feet of Jesus.

No matter where you are, if you have a pure heart and a pure conscience, you can pray. It may be on the streetcar, at the workbench, or at the washtub; but your soul can breathe a prayer to God, and the incense of praise can be ascending from your heart. God Himself will meet your soul when you lift your heart in prayer before Him. Oh, it is wonderful, the plan God has made for us in these last days! It just ravishes our souls to think that God has revealed these things to babes in Christ and hid them from the wise and prudent.

𝗔 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

He wants His people to be on fire for Him. God is saving sinners, sanctifying believers, baptizing with the Holy Ghost and fire, and healing the sick. This salvation must be preached in all the world and to all nations, and then shall the end come. God grant that His people may be faithful, seeking God and searching and wrestling and praying, paying the whole price and obtaining the prize, so that we shall not have to say in that day, “I would to God I had been faithful!”

The call is for laborers to go out into the harvest field. Oh, may you go down before God and strip for the race! May you say, “God, make me a channel, empty me out, and fill me with the new wine of the Spirit, that I might bear to a dying world the most blessed Gospel message ever on mortal lips.”

God has called us to be fishers of men. There is no higher calling in the world than to tell a lost soul that there is a way out of sin. The powers of darkness are raging: but God is working, through the prayers and supplication of His people, to stem the awful tide. May God help every soul to gird on the armor of the Lord and be faithful in prayer and consecration; for truly we know not the day nor the hour wherein the Son of Man cometh.

𝗚𝗢𝗗'𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘

Psalm 91:1-16

Lesson 83 - Elementary

𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚

"For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways” (Psalm 91:11)

𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨

𝗚𝗼𝗱'𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀

The Bible, God's Holy Word, contains a great many promises to the child of God. We have Jesus' own words that "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away" [MAT:24:35]). So we know without a doubt that all the promises in the Bible are true. However, we have something to do in order to receive the good things the Lord has promised. Did your mother or father ever promise you something good if you obeyed what was told you to do? God's promises are often that way " He will give us many, many good things if we do the things He wants us to do.

A Christian does not have a hard time obeying the words of Jesus; a child who is saved does not have a hard time obeying his parents. But those who are not saved cannot easily obey the Lord and it is hard for them to be obedient to their parents, too. Jesus wants to save every child. Then it is easy for them to do what God wants them to do.

In the first verse of the Ninety-First Psalm we find a promise to those who live very near to God. In order to dwell there, we must be saved from our sin " the Blood of Jesus must cover our soul. Then we need to pray every day, morning and night, in order to keep saved from sin. If we keep saved, we may expect to be taken care of by God. We may take a pencil and write our name wherever we find the words, thee, thou, thy and thine, in this chapter. All those wonderful promises are for us if we dwell in the secret place " if we keep saved.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀

The man who wrote this Psalm gave us many beautiful pictures of God's care over us. When he said, "He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust," he perhaps meant what Jesus said when He talked about gathering people as a hen gathers her chickens. The baby chicks feel safe when the mother hen takes them under her feathers; a Christian is safe when God takes care of him.

𝗡𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿

God said that His children did not need to be afraid at night nor in the daytime, because He would protect them if they trusted Him. We have learned that when the people were travelling through the wilderness, where there was little water, God brought water out of the rock. He sent them bread from Heaven, that they called manna. He went before them in a pillar of fire at night and in a cloud by day. God protected them from going the wrong way at night and protected them from the heat of the day in that land " the cloud kept the hot desert sun from shining too much on the people.

We who are saved have nothing whatever to fear. We may place our trust in God and know that He will never fail us. Should trouble come, He promises: "I will be with him in trouble." We are told that when sickness comes, "Thou shalt not be afraid . . . for the pestilence." He also promises that "there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling." When we love Jesus with all our heart, His love and watchful eye is over us.

𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿

During the recent war, the soldier boys who were trusting in God found that He was their protection when in danger. The Lord took care of them and brought many of them safely home again. They are thanking God for His kindness to them.

A young soldier who flew 35 times over enemy country said that the boys in his crew gave him a Bible to take care of on those missions. He had the Bible open to Psalm 91, and he trusted in God's promises to protect him and the crew. He said, "When you face death, and your life can be snapped out in a moment of time, you want to be living mighty close to God . . . Many times we saw ships go down around us." The seventh verse tells us: "A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand: but it shall not come nigh thee." This chapter was a great comfort to him. He also said, "One day we were going over the target and my pilot called back over the phones and said, 'Pray as you never prayed before.' We saw a ship go down in front of us that day. I can see many times that the Lord's hand was over us. I can't count the times He protected us."

𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀' 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

When Jesus was here upon earth, He was led by the Spirit one day into a lonely place to be tempted of the devil " Satan. He was there for forty days and forty nights and had nothing to eat. But the angels were watching over Jesus, and they came to Him at once after He had sent Satan away. Satan had go to when Jesus told him to go, because Jesus has power over all evil spirits. We do not need to be afraid of Satan when we have Jesus with us.

𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Many times when we are in danger although we may not see the angel of the Lord yet he is present to protect us. A missionary said that in India the little unsaved children are always afraid in the dark. The missionary told them that they need not be afraid if they asked Jesus to take care of them. She said that Jesus was so strong that if a whole army of people should try to hurt one of them, all Jesus would have to say was, "Stop," and the whole army would have to stand still. A week later one of those children who had never before heard about Jesus said: "I went to grandmother's house and it was dark when I came home. Then I asked that 'Jesus-God' to take care of me, and nothing hurt me at all." Jesus is stronger than anyone, and when we obey Him, and trust Him, and ask Him to take care of us, He can do it, and will do it.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗪𝗘𝗟𝗩𝗘 𝗔𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗧

[MAT:10:1-42]

Lesson 81 - Junior

𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚

"For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:30)

𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀

At the beginning of Jesus' ministry He had chosen twelve men to be His disciples or followers. They had left their homes and their work to follow Jesus. They had been with Him when He taught the Sermon on the Mount. They were with Him on the Sea of Galilee when the tempest was stilled by the word of Jesus. They had seen Him perform many miracles -" the demoniac healed, the woman who touched the hem of His garment made whole, Jairus' daughter raised from the dead, and many other miracles. These men had come from different walks of life — " fishermen, tax gatherers, followers of John the Baptist" — but they had the same schooling in Jesus. They were now to be Apostles, which means "sent out." They were sent out as real witnesses to preach and to teach Jesus Christ. A witness is one who tells what he has seen and known by personal experience, not what he has been told by others. Even later, when they were choosing an Apostle to take Judas' place, they wanted someone who had "companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us" (Acts 1:21, 22).

Jesus sent the men who were qualified to be His Apostles. He sent those who had had the privilege of being with Him, who had learned of Him, and who had real experiences with Him. Today God does not send out just anyone to spread the Gospel; He wants those who have experienced His power to tell about it. It was more than just watching Christ perform miracles, for He gave them, too, the right and the power to cast out unclean spirits as well as heal all manner of sickness and disease. It is one thing to watch the change in life of a person, who becomes a Christian, hear him testify and seen him work for the Lord, but it is quite another thing to have the experience and power of God in us.

These men had started out to be followers of Jesus, and then He called them to be preachers. We do not know, when we begin our Christian walk, what God has in store for us, or what position He will call us to fill. We can only obey, so we will have a testimony like Paul — "I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision."

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

As Jesus sent these Apostles to spread the Gospel, He gave them definite instructions as to where and what and how to preach. Along with these orders He gave promises, warnings, and encouragement.

At this time they were to preach only to the Jews, whom He likens to lost sheep, subject to starvation and death; for Israel was without a shepherd. Later on, the Apostles were told to preach to the Gentiles. Jesus said that after the Day of Pentecost they were to preach in Samaria and in the uttermost part of the earth. Their message was to be: "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." That is the same message preached by John the Baptist, and it is the same message our ministers preach today.

They were to preach and heal without charge, just as Christ did. He said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35). The Lord told His Apostles to take no money with them nor even a change of clothes, for He knew that those temporal things would be a burden or a hindrance. Today some people become so concerned about their money and possessions that Jesus and His work come second in their lives instead of having first place.

Jesus told the disciples to stay at the homes of those who received them. If they were not received they were to go where they were wanted. What a serious thing to reject the Gospel and to hinder its spread! Perhaps these people who did not receive them never had another chance. The Apostles were told to shake the very dust off their feet when they were rejected in a house or city. They were not to reprove them, nor beg them, nor argue with them. A Christian does not have a "pay back" or "get even" spirit. In Romans 12:19 we read, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀

When Jesus sent them forth He told them that it would not be without opposition. As Jesus was persecuted so His disciples would also be as sheep in the midst of wolves. Wolves are enemies of sheep. If they have a chance, they will kill and devour the sheep. God's people have always had, and still have, enemies who would completely destroy them, if they had a chance. God has warned His people so they will be on the alert and not give the enemy a chance to injure them.

For that reason the Apostles were told to be "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." In the Garden of Eden Satan chose to work through the serpent because it was more subtile, or cunning and clever. The dove is often pictured to represent peace, purity, love, or simplicity. The dove never harms anyone or anything, not even to protect itself. In other instances, too, a Christian is likened to a dove. As a dove brought good tidings of dry land to Noah so a Christian bears good tidings of the Gospel. The Song of Solomon uses the dove to illustrate the Church longing for the return of Christ. It has been observed that a dove quickly forgets injuries.

A Christian loves his enemies, does good to them who hate him, and prays for them who persecute him (Matthew 5:44). All these qualities — "the harmlessness of the dove and the wisdom and cleverness of a serpent" — go to make up the character of a Christian. This is the combination the Lord expected of His Apostles. A Christian must speak up and take his stand against Satan and sin, yet do it peaceably. He must not give in to sinful men but state the truth. Jesus said, "The truth shall make you free."

Jesus warned the Apostles that men would hate them and send them up for a hearing before the rulers because they were Christians. But He said that the Spirit of God would tell them what to answer.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

These words of warning might have put fear in the hearts of some, but Jesus always knows when to give encouragement. He told them of God's care and protection. As we read the wonderful words of encouragement, we are reminded that they were meant not only for the Apostles but for all of Christ's followers. As God knew all about the Apostles so He knows all about us. Even the hairs of our head are numbered. We are of more value than a sparrow, which is considered common, cheap, and good for very little. But think how God clothes them, provides food, protects them, gives them a song, and notes their fall. God will not do less for us.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁

To confess Christ before men is the key to God's protection, both spiritual and physical. It is too important to overlook or neglect. It is that -" confessing Christ before men -" which will determine whether we are acknowledged by Jesus. There are many different ways to confess Christ: one is to testify before men, but not that alone. Some can speak beautifully but their everyday life contradicts the words. In like manner, to deny means more than renouncing Christ before men. To refuse Jesus an entrance, to withhold something from God, to disown Him and His works -" all this is denying. One cannot quietly become a Christian without anyone knowing it. In the seventh chapter of Mathew we are told, "A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. . . . Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them."

𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝗻'𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗲𝘀

Jesus told them that a Christian is likely to have opposition from his family. The saved members of the family live different lives from the unsaved. An unsaved parent may oppose a godly child; sometimes it is an unsaved child that opposes a godly parent. There are not the same interests nor is there the closeness there once was. "For what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? And what communion hath light with darkness" (II Corinthians 6:14).

Then, too, we love our families very much. But the Bible tells us that God must have first place in our hearts. So a choice must be made " to love God most or to love our families or any one member more than God. If we are to be Christ's followers, He will and must come first. "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?" (Romans 8:35).

To take up one's cross is more than bearing trials for the sake of the Gospel. It means being willing to give one's life for Christ's cause. As the world looks at it, one has lost his life when he give it to God, whereas he really has gained eternal life. One does not deserve the blessings and privileges of God's love unless he gives his life to Him.

A Christian not only takes up his cross but also follows Him. His prayer or consecration is: "To do what He wants me to do, to be what He wants me to be, to go where He wants me to go, and to say what He wants me to say." One may, like Peter, forsake all to follow Jesus, but the test is whether we remain true and follow to the end. Jesus said, "He that endureth to the end shall be saved" (Matthew 10:22).

𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀

Just as rewards were promised to faithful Apostles so we shall be rewarded for service to God. In this life we find great pleasure and satisfaction in the Lord's service, but that is not all. In Heaven rewards will be handed out " not for great service but for faithful service. The Apostles served God for the same reason we do today. We want to serve God because of our love to God, not for praise of man or for reward.

Lesson 81 - Senior

𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙚

"For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:30)

𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙍𝙚𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙨

𝗜 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝘄𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆

1. They are empowered to do the work for which they are called, [MAT:10:1]; [MAK:3:14-15].

2. The names of the twelve, now called Apostles, are listed, [MAT:10:2-4]; [MAK:3:14-15].

3. Their ministry is limited to the house of Israel, [MAT:10:5-6; [LUK:9:1-2]; [ROM:1:16].

𝗜𝗜 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆

1. They are to preach and heal without charge, [MAT:10:7-8]; [MAK:16:20].

2. They are not to take money or extra apparel with them, [MAT:10:9-10]; [MAT:6:31-32].

3. They are to abide at the house which receives them, and rejecters are judged, [MAT:10:11-15]; [ACT:13:51]; [1CO:9:14].

𝗜𝗜𝗜 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗹𝘀

1. Like their Lord, they will be hated of all men for the Gospel's sake, and brought before the council, [MAT:10:16-25]; [JHN:15:18]; [JHN:16:33].

2. They are not to fear men but God, who notes the sparrow's fall and cares for His children, [MAT:10:28-33].

3. Their foes will be of their own household, [MAT:10:34-39]; [ROM:8:35].

4. A blessing will come upon those who receive His ministers, [MAT:10:40-42].

𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨

𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲

Just prior to sending out the twelve disciples, Jesus was very busy healing the sick and casting out devils. The multitudes had thronged Him. He was moved with compassion and said to His disciples: "The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest." The people were also spiritually sick; they needed a "physician." Their hopes had perished; they needed reviving.

Centuries have passed and we find that the world is in the same condition today. The call for labourers is still going forth; the harvest fields are white but the labourers are few. Can we sit idly by and see the lost and dying as they perish, without doing our best to se the Gospel spread?

𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀

Jesus was walking along the shores of Galilee one day and saw Peter and Andrew fishing. He called them from their nets to follow Him. They straightway left their nets and followed Jesus. A little farther down the shore He saw James and John mending their nets, and He called them also to follow Him. They immediately left their nets and followed Jesus. What a response to the call of the Gospel! The Spirit of God is knocking at the door of every heart today. How few are "immediately" leaving all to follow Jesus!

We find other disciples called from different occupations " Matthew from the receipt of custom. They had all witnessed the ministry of Jesus and His manner of healing the sick. This was a period of learning; they were just babes in Christ and they must receive instruction in righteousness. Paul says, "That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works" (II Timothy 3:17). It has been said that the best preparation for the ministry is acquaintance and communication with God.

𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲

These disciples did not receive their instructions in a training school or seminary, as is the usual method in modern times, but they were trained through daily fellowship and contact with Jesus while following Him in His ministry. One time Jesus thanked the Father because He had hid these things from the wise and prudent and had revealed them unto babes -" simple-hearted men who would believe the truth.

In the modern church today, emphasis is placed on much learning, and worldly wisdom, which all too often results in the neglect of the spiritual side and being genuinely born again. Jesus said to Nicodemus, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God: (John 3:3). Today we still become personally acquainted with Jesus by being born again.

𝗔𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀

The twelve were originally called disciples. Now they are sent forth and called Apostles. A disciple is one who receives instructions from and follows another; an apostle is a messenger sent forth. The call of the disciple is a call to learning; the call of the apostle is to go forth.

It was not accidental that He chose twelve men to be the ones through whom His church was to be established. This number coincides with the twelve patriarchs or fathers of the twelve tribes of Israel. In Revelation we are told that the names of the twelve Apostles are in the foundation stones of the New Jerusalem. The names of the Apostles are listed by two's, and it is possible that they were sent out as they are listed, by two's.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁

Christ came to His own, "the Jews". His ministry on earth was directed primarily to them. He sent His disciples first to the Jews; but because of their unbelief and rejection of Christ, the Gospel was then carried to the Gentiles. Paul said, "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek" (Romans 1:16). "To the Greek" here, means to the Gentiles.

Christ did not refuse to give the Gentiles the truth when they came to Him. When the Syrophoenician woman, whose daughter was plagued, came to Him, Jesus told her it was not meet to take the children's bread and give it to dogs. She said, "Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table" (Matthew 15:27). Jesus honoured her faith and healed her daughter. She was a Gentile but she had a view of the real truth when she spoke those words.

𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆

They were to provide neither gold nor silver in their purses, nor scrip for their journey: "For the workman is worthy of his meat," How different from the worldly religious organisations of today! Some modern evangelists demand a guarantee of a certain salary before they accept an appointment.

Into whatever town they entered they were to enquire who was worthy; and when they came into a house, if they were received they were to abide there and let their peace come upon it; but if they were refused they were to shake off the dust from their feet as a testimony against that house or city.

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves." Since our first forefathers sinned there has been a continuous battle raging in this world between the forces of darkness and the forces of light. Jesus warned the Apostles that they would be persecuted for His sake, and would be delivered up to the council; but He told them to fear none of those things, but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. James was the first Apostle to be put to death for the cause of Christ. He fell into the hands of Herod and was killed.

A man's foes shall be they of his own household. Sometimes our most severe persecutors are those from our own family. In some cases the household becomes divided: the parents against the children, and the children against the parents, because some are saved and believe on Jesus and others reject Him.

After presenting the hardships of the Gospel to the Apostles, Jesus tells them of the love and protection of their heavenly Father, and reassures them that not a sparrow falls without His notice and that they are of more value than many sparrows.

These instructions to the twelve contain some wonderful advice for us today: to be "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves"; to expect hardships; to trust in God's unfailing care of His own; and to keep our eyes fixed on the eternal goal.

𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻

They were to go forth and preach, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." Jesus, and also John the Baptist, had preached the same message. There were no newspapers, radios, or telegraph wires; the news must be spread by word of mouth.

In parables He told them about a literal kingdom that He would establish in the proper time. He spoke about a nobleman who went into a far country for a long time, to receive for Himself a kingdom and return. Christ is in that "country" now; He will soon return to receive His kingdom, for which He has paid the price by His redemption of mankind. Then He will sit on the throne of His Kingdom. What a privilege for us today to accept this wonderful Gospel and be ready to receive this great King when He comes for His own!
