Friction in the flock
FOR READING & MEDITATION - EZEKIEL 34:11-24
'Therefore this is what the Sovereign LoRo says...I myself will judge
between the fat sheep and the lean sheep.' (v.20)
MESSAGE
Yesterday we continued looking at how just as a shepherd can calm his sheep by being close to them, so the Lord
delivers us from fear as we fix our eyes on Him.
Today we go on to look at the second source of conflict from which a good shepherd seeks to keep his sheep safe - and that is tension, rivalry and competition within the flock itself. I am given to understand that just as there is a 'pecking order' among chickens, so there is a 'butting order' among sheep. This thought is brought out very vividly in the passage before us today. Rival tension, competition for status and self-assertion can produce a great deal of friction in a flock - the sheep are unable to lie down and rest in contentment.
Unfortunately there are churches like this. Men and women fight and compete among themselves for position or status, creating tensions and conflict in the Christian community. The apostle James says of such people 'You lust for what you don't have ... You want what isn't yours and will risk violence to get your hands on it' (James 4:2, The Message). Many are prevented from enjoying the blessings of corporate fellowship because. of the competitiveness and status-seeking of a few.
How does a shepherd deal with friction among his sheep? He does it by walking among them to bring to heel the offenders and reassure those that are distressed. A good shepherd has great compassíon for the sheep that get butted and pushed around by the more domineering ones. Is your church or fellowship in conflict because of over-competitive and status-seeking Christians? Then make sure your eyes stay focused on the divine Shepherd.
Action point
Gentle and loving Shepherd, forgive us that by our competitiveness and status-seeking, we so easily turn our life as Your flock Into a feud. Walk among us in love - to discipline and to encourage. For Your own dear name's sake. Amen.
