HAVE YOU WONDERED?
Have you ever wondered why the name of the wives of Samuel and Eli were not mentioned along with the misbehavior of their children?
Well, what I have discovered from the fall till date is that God always holds men (husbands) more responsible for the failure of the family. This does not mean that women (wives) will be totally exonerated by God. But much is expected from the man of the house.
God held Adam more responsible than Eve when they fell. Who knows, maybe God would have solved the problem in the garden if Adam took his stand and refused to eat the fruit along with his wife. But when Adam fell, the whole race of man fell. The Bible never said sin entered through one woman, but through one man, Adam (Rom. 5:12).
As great as Samuel was, he couldn't lead his children in the right way and the children of Israel told him that his children were not following in his footsteps. Therefore, they asked for a king. Samuel's failure in his home was used as an excuse to demand what was not yet God's time for them to have. 1 Samuel 8:5: "Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have."
God warned Eli about his children's waywardness. Funnily enough, we did not read that God mentioned his wife along with this warning. In 1 Samuel 2:27-36 and 1 Samuel 3:11-14, we can see God’s warning through an unnamed prophet and later through the young boy Samuel. But Eli did not heed the warning and acted promptly and God judged Eli because of his sons, Hophni and Phinehas.
Dear Christian husbands, please, don't take the matter of your family lightly. You will be held more responsible in the end.
Jesus is the pattern head and example of the man of the house. Let's go to him for grace, wisdom and strength. We cannot afford to fail.
