Are You Rich Toward God?
“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.“ - Luke 12:15-21 KJV
People (including professing believers) whose posture, (acceptance or rejection, honour or dishonour, respect or disrespect, affiliation or dissociation, friendship or otherwise), and perception (of success or failure, relevance or irrelevance) of others are determined by status (i.e., economic and other social considerations), rather than shared humanity based on the law of Christ as written in Galatians 6:2, “Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ”, almost always miss the point of life itself.
Sad but true, material considerations have replaced the voice of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of many in the Church and on the pulpit today. Most people prefer gain over godliness, they worship mammon over God and economic status over sanctification. Economic consideration has become the single most important determining factor in our choices of who to befriend or reject, marry or divorce, love or hate, move closer to or stay away from, vote for or against, and the list goes on. Little wonder. the world keeps sinking into darkness and gross darkness now covers the people.
Like the rich man, people in this category are usually small-minded and carnal because they have been deceived by riches which has chocked Christ’s words in their hearts - (Mark 4:19). Now they only see life from the prism of materialism. If the rich man had known where Lazarus was headed, even in his pitiable, unattractive and critical condition, he would have paid him more attention before they crossed to the other side. See Luke 16:19-31
If Jesus had lived the way most of the professing Christians of today live, only the rich and powerful would have been saved, but thanks be unto God, His ways are not our ways…
“For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: but God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: that no flesh should glory in his presence.”
1 Corinthians 1:26-29 KJV
Don’t get me wrong, it is perfectly fine and righteous to have wealth and influence but a life of opulence is not necessarily a sign of divine approval. A person of means is not necessarily a man of God. Wealth is not a sign of God’s approval and a lack of it is not a proof of God’s rejection. We do not judge a book by its cover.
I have been in need and I have experienced abundance, take it from me, it is a billion times better to be a person of means than a person in need, yet, the way we treat fellow humans at any given time should never be a function of their status but their character.
Don’t embrace poverty nor be comfortable being poor, there is absolutely nothing godly about poverty, yet be wary of the erroneous teachings of undue wealth accumulation here and now at the expense of having riches in heaven, Matthew 19:21-23; 25:35-40. Dear Richie Rich and my fellow Wanna-Be Rich guys and girls, I know you have been taught to build wealth and how to build it, and O, how you love that message, I am sure it’s your favourite sermon. However, do not forget the right place to store them for safekeeping, lest you lose it all in the end. It is good to have plenty of money in the bank, but it is best to have it kept away in heaven, where inflation, devaluation, recession and other economic uncertainties cannot affect it. In Christ’s words - “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6: 19-21.
Dear struggling brother and sister, do not succumb to the blackmail that you are nothing without riches and affluence or that you must be God-forsaken, lazy, foolish, and cursed because you have economic challenges. Don’t allow anyone, anywhere to define you by your purse, learn to always choose the words of Christ over any man’s opinion, no matter how wealthy, successful, well-received, and influential he may be. “…Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.“ Luke 12:15
Don’t allow men’s childishness which usually manifests as oppression, disrespect, dehumanization, relegation, rejection, dissociation, etc., to damage your confidence in Christ. Hang on my friend, He’ll come true for you. Hebrews 10:35-36 says, “Cast not away, therefore, your confidence, which hath great recompense of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise”
Whatever happens, in riches or want, “Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: If riches increase, set not your heart upon them.“ Psalm 62:10 KJV
Proverbs 11:4 – “Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.”
Will you set your eyes on that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven. 23:5 Proverbs 23:5
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God - Colossians 3: 1-3
”If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; he is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.“
1 Timothy 6:3-10 KJV
