*THEME 27 ~ NEW-BIRTH SERIES {Episode 397 / Lesson 8}*
_TOPIC ~ IT IS POSSIBLE TO LOSE SALVATION_; _GUARD YOUR SALVATION LIKE A GREAT TREASURE_.
TEXT ~ Hebrews 6:4–6 (KJV)
📕“ *For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost*,
_And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come_,
*If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance ; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame*.”
🎈 *INTRODUCTION*
Some teachers and modern-day apostles keep promoting the idea that once a person is saved, it is impossible to lose salvation, all in the name of special revelation on grace and faith. What they call revelation is actually echoing some of the writings of E.W Kenyon.
This doctrine of “eternal security” was essentially repackaged and represented in the writings of E. W. Kenyon, which these people are trying to echo for church's consumption- making it sound like special revelation on grace and faith.
According to E.W Kenyon and many who echo his teachings today, especially in the pentecostal settings, salvation is eternally secured and can never be lost. He taught that a believer can only lose fellowship with God, but not relationship.
In many of the teachings of the modern day teachers (echoing Kenyon), they often lift the phrase “eternal salvation” from scriptures such as Hebrews 5:9:
“ _And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him_.”
They then use such verses to support their interpretation. However, that is not what the verse — or similar verses — is actually teaching.
They isolate the phrase and attach their own interpretation to it. The doctrine of unconditional eternal security can be very dangerous, especially to a new convert.
You will need to read this message carefully, soberly, and prayerfully as the Lord helps me to reveal His heart from the Scriptures concerning salvation.
🛑 *DOCTRINAL EXPOSITION ON HOW SALVATION CAN BE LOST*
Hebrews 6:4–6
From our opening text, it is clear that it is not only possible to lose salvation, but that for certain individuals, after losing salvation, the Scripture says it becomes IMPOSSIBLE for them to regain it — even if they desire to!
This means that while all believers can lose salvation , certain categories of believers can lose salvation eternally.
The passage itself outlines the criteria of those who can lose salvation eternally. Although the criteria is not my primary focus in this episode, you can study the criteria carefully for yourself.
However, the passage teaches the complete opposite of what many “eternal security” preachers are promoting.
While some are saying salvation cannot be lost, the passage is saying that salvation can not only be lost, but can even be lost eternally.
Is it not amazing that while some preach eternal salvation, the Scripture warns about eternal damnation!?
This means that ( according to that passage) , if you are a christian whose spiritual maturity has not yet reached the level described in those verses, you may lose your salvation ( temporarily) , but God may still show mercy and restore you if you genuinely repent and meet His conditions.
However, if a believer reaches a certain spiritual threshold and then falls away, such a fall may result in eternal damnation- eternal loss of salvation.
The Scripture uses a terrifying phrase:
“It is impossible...”
That phrase scares me!
Brethren, many people tell you that nothing is impossible with God, yet this passage clearly speaks about something that is impossible.
Therefore, you must handle your salvation carefully and guard it jealously.
🛑 *THE BALANCE — BIBLICAL CORRECTION*
While it is possible to lose salvation, as established in many Scriptures and explained above, it is important to understand that committing sin is not automatically what causes a believer to lose salvation..
This is always the emphasis of many of these proponents of eternal salvation.
And that is where they miss it. Salvation can be lost but sin is not the direct exit door to losing salvation.
The passage did not say, “If they commit certain sins...”
Rather, it says:
“If they shall fall away...”
Therefore, “falling away” is the way to lose salvation- the real exit door from salvation.
What does “fall away” mean?
📝 _To fall away means to depart from faith — to cease believing_.
Salvation comes by faith; faith is the entrance into salvation. Therefore, unbelief becomes the exit door.
Salvation is not a one-way journey or a forced experience. A person can receive salvation willingly through faith, and a person can also reject and lose salvation willingly through unbelief.
⛔ *CONCLUSION*
Should we then continue in sin simply because salvation is not lost merely by committing sin?
Certainly not.
If a person continually lives in sin after new-birth , it may indicate that the nature of sin was never removed and new nature of righteousness was never truly imparted to him at the New Birth experience in the first place.
As the Scripture says:
“ _How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein_ ?”
— Romans 6:2 (KJV)
Although sin may not be the immediate exit door from salvation, sin brings many destructive consequences into a believer’s life and, if left unchecked, can eventually lead to the point of falling away.
📌 Read this carefully: Sin, though not a direct exit door to losing salvation, is surely a door that leads to another door that leads to the exit door- be careful with sin!
Therefore, brethren, guard your salvation jealously with everything you have. If it is lost, the regret may come when it is already too late.
Philippians 2:12 (KJV)
“ *Wherefore, my beloved......, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling*.”
If salvation could never be lost under any circumstance, why would the Scripture instruct us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling?
So , I also beseech you brethren to work out your salvation with fear and trembling....
Every blessing,
