Topic: The Obedient Life of Jesus (2)
Scripture: John 5:30; John 6:38
John 5:30 - I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. NKJV
John 6:38 - For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. NKJV
Philippians 2:5 - The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had: 6 He always had the nature of God, but he did not think that by force he should try to remain equal with God. 7 Instead of this, of his own free will he gave up all he had, and took the nature of a servant. He became like a human being and appeared in human likeness. 8 He was humble and walked the path of obedience all the way to death - his death on the cross. 9 For this reason God raised him to the highest place above and gave him the name that is greater than any other name. 10 And so, in honor of the name of Jesus all beings in heaven, on earth, and in the world below will fall on their knees, 11 and all will openly proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Romans 5:19 - For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many will be made righteous. NKJV
RECAP: Last week we discussed the works of Christ under the topic - His Obedience, we said that Jesus was obedient to God His father 100%. First we said that His obedience was necessary to right the wrongs that Adam’s disobedience did. Then we said that His obedience was a mindset and that His will was yielded to the will of the Father all the time. We discussed two expressions of His obedience {works of His obedience}.
1 - His obedience/submission to his earthly parents.
2 - His obedience to John’s Baptism.
Today we continue with two more expressions of His obedience as revealed in the Bible.
3. JESUS WAS OBEDIENT TO THE LEADING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - He yielded to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 4:1 - Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
The leading was not to a place of comfort, yet He obeyed promptly. He was led into the wilderness.
Wilderness: 2048 ἔρημος [E)/RHMOS] {érēmos} \er'-ay-mos\
of uncertain affinity; lonesome, i.e. (by implication) waste (usually as a noun, 5561 being implied):--desert, desolate, solitary, wilderness.
This is one of the most surprising verses in the Gospels - "Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil."
Mark 1:13, tells us that there were wild beasts in the wilderness with Him. On one hand, this could be a reference to the tempter, the devil, on the other hand it could be a reference to actual wild animals. One translation of the phrase wild beasts actually means “a dangerous, destructive, venomous animal.” Or a trap.
Notice something remarkable - The Holy Spirit did not first lead Jesus to a palace. Nor to a crusade or revival meeting. Nor to public applause. He led Him into a wilderness - Into hunger. Into solitude. Into temptation.
Tempt: 3985 πειράζω [PEIRA/ZW] {peirázō} \pi-rad'-zo\
from 3984; to test (objectively), i.e. endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline:--assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt(-er), try.

from the base of 4008 (through the idea of piercing); a test, i.e. attempt, experience:--assaying, trial.
The idea of temptation is to pierce. If Jesus was not solid enough He would have been pierced. Are you made of steel? Or are you like a yard of cloth that a single needle can pierce through? The solidity of Jesus came from one thing: He was walking in obedience to the leading (the word) of the Holy Spirit. This idea of temptation is also to prove, that you are made up of what you really are made up of. In a sense, it is God bragging on you that this one is mine, he / she will not fail or fall.
This whole scenario also teaches us an important lesson. Being led by God does not always mean being led into comfort. Sometimes obedience leads through difficult places.
Many believers wrongly conclude, "If life becomes difficult, perhaps I missed God's will." Not necessarily.
Sometimes the wilderness is exactly where God wants us.
On one hand, Adam failed in a garden, on the other hand, Jesus triumphed in the wilderness.
He triumphed through obedience. Three times Satan tempted Him, three times Jesus answered, "It is written."
Notice that Jesus did not defeat Satan by spectacular miracles. He defeated him through faithful obedience to God's Word. Jesus had a heart that was prepared to obey. He defeated the enemy through His obedience.
How does this apply to you and me? Victory over temptation is not found merely in determination. It comes through a heart that treasures God's Word above every competing voice.
4. JESUS WAS OBEDIENT CONCERNING THE PURPOSE OF GOD FOR HIS LIFE – Obedience concerning His mission - John 6:38; John 9:4.
“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” John 6:38 NKJV
“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” John 9:4 NKJV
His life was not about building His brand but about finishing His assignment - to die for the sins of humanity. He lived to FINISH The Father's assignment.
One of the defining characteristics of Jesus' ministry was His unwavering sense of purpose. He never forgot why He came.
People wanted Him to become king. He refused.
Crowds wanted more miracles. He withdrew to pray.
Some wanted political revolution. He proclaimed the Kingdom of God.
His life was never controlled by public opinion. Nor by popularity. Nor by applause. Nor by criticism.
His compass was always the Father's will.
He lived with one consuming ambition: "I must finish the work My Father has given Me."
This is one of the greatest lessons we can learn from Jesus.
Success is not measured by fame. Success is measured by faithfulness.
When you stand before Jesus, and He asks, "Did you finish the assignment God gave you?" What would your response be?
I was famous?
I was wealthy?
I was xyz?
Jesus finished His own assignment on earth. And because He did, salvation came to the world.
It was all because of His perfect obedience.
Part of fulfilling God’s purpose for your life is to be accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. Here is your chance. Talk to Him.

It is written according Psalm 23:1 - I have all that I want and need, because God is my Father and my Shepherd.
It is written according to Hebrews 13:5-6 - God will always with me. Therefore I am not afraid.
It is written according to Romans 8:28–29 - All things are working together for my good. Tests, trials, good or bad, up or down. Every single thing is turning out for my good.
It is written according to John 9:4 - I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
