*SAINT OF THE DAY*
*St. Elizabeth*
πΉ
St. Elizabeth is revered for her steadfast faith and important role in the Bible, especially in the Gospel of Luke. A descendant of Aaron, she was married to Zechariah. Although she was righteous and without fault, Elizabeth remained childless well into her old age. Significantly, she was related to the Virgin Mary.
The angel Gabriel visited Zechariah to announce that Elizabeth would bear a son named John. This child was destined to be a major figure in the eyes of the Lord, even before his birth, being filled with the Holy Spirit. Despite their advanced years, Elizabeth became pregnant, fulfilling God's promise. Zechariah doubted the angel's message, which resulted in him being muted until their son was born.
When Mary, who was to be the mother of Jesus, came to visit Elizabeth, the baby in Elizabeth's womb (John) responded with joy. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth recognized Mary's blessed state and the significance of the child she carried. The two women spent three months together, sharing the miraculous experience of their pregnancies.
Upon the birth of her son, Elizabeth named him John, as the angel had instructed. This decision surprised their community because it broke with family naming traditions. When Zechariah confirmed the name, his ability to speak was miraculously restored.
John became John the Baptist, who would later baptize Jesus. The Bible does not provide further details about Elizabeth's life. Her feast day is celebrated on November 5, honoring her memory and her role in the salvation story.
