CCC Glorious Service Sunday May 24th, 2026.
Pentecost Sunday.
First lesson Exodus 19:1-20
Second lesson Acts 2:1-21
Topic:
Pentecost: When God Moved In
1. Same Feast, Two Covenants
Both events occurred on Pentecost/Shavuot. Sinai marked the birth of Israel as a nation under the Old Covenant. Acts 2 marked the birth of the Church under the New Covenant.
2. God’s Presence with Fire and Sound
Sinai: “thunder and lightning… a thick cloud… a very loud trumpet blast… Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke and fire”.
At Pentecost: “a sound like a mighty rushing wind… tongues as of fire” rested on each person. God uses fire and sound to reveal His presence.
3. A Call to Holiness and Preparation.
God told Israel to consecrate themselves, wash clothes, and not touch the mountain.
Before Pentecost, the 120 were “all together in one place” in prayer and unity. The Spirit fills prepared hearts.
4. God Spoke Directly to His People
At Sinai, God answered Moses “in thunder”.
At Pentecost, God spoke through believers “in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance”. The barrier between God and man was breaking down.
5. A Supernatural Language Event.
At Sinai, the trumpet sound grew louder and louder.
At Pentecost, Jews from “every nation under heaven” heard the gospel in their own language. God reversed Babel and made His word universal.
6. Fear and Awe in Response
At Sinai, “all the people in the camp trembled”.
At Pentecost, the crowd was “bewildered… amazed and astonished”. God’s presence produces reverence.
7. From External Law to Internal Spirit
Sinai gave the Law written on stone. Israel had to obey outwardly.
Pentecost gave the Holy Spirit who writes God’s law on hearts and empowers obedience from within. That’s why Pentecost Sunday is about empowerment, not just rules.
8. God’s Purpose: A Priestly Nation and People
At Sinai God said, “you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation”.
At Pentecost, every believer became a priest who could speak God’s mighty works and prophesy under the Spirit.
9. Prophecy Fulfilled
Peter explained Pentecost by quoting Joel 2:28-32: “I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh… sons and daughters shall prophesy”. What was hinted at Sinai was fulfilled at Pentecost.
10. From Fear of God to Boldness in God*
At Sinai, the people were afraid to approach the mountain.
At Pentecost, Peter stood up boldly and preached to thousands. Pentecost Sunday celebrates the shift from fear to Spirit-filled boldness for witnesses.
For Pentecost Sunday
Pentecost isn’t just about tongues and wind. It’s the day God moved from speaking to His people at Sinai, to dwelling in His people by the Holy Spirit. It’s why we celebrate empowerment, holiness, and the mission to tell “the mighty works of God” to every nation.
