Need For Missions Awakening In Ebonyi State
By Success K. Uchime

There is a serious need for a concerted and intentional missions awakening in Ebonyi State. Churches and mission agencies need to work together for this very purpose.

Definitely, Ebonyi State needs help in this direction. It is a mission field waiting for the end-time harvest. But the challenges are high: Simple observable survey clearly shows that of all the five Southeast states, it is the only state with the highest number of rural communities. This poses a very high challenge for missions, as some churches tactically avoid pioneer works in such locations.

Again, most churches in the state are not resourceful enough to embark on massive rural church planting, thereby giving way for much concentration of churches in and around Abakaliki urban - the only highly developed urban city in the state.

Furthermore, the dominance of Islam is at its highest level in the state, thereby also posing a greater threat and challenge for missions activities. They are getting stronger and stronger per day, and if much is not done by the church and mission agencies, Islam may overrun the entire state in the nearest future.

Moslems are capitalising on the perceived high level of poverty amongst the people to push Islam in the state, especially in the rural communities. Lands are being grabbed by all possible means for the purpose of building Islamic centers. Even some of their young ladies are being married off or illicitly impregnated by rich Moslem men with just little inducement. Very disturbing is the rate by which young people are being converted to Islam in the state on daily basis through same financial inducements.

We believe the time is now for churches/mission agencies to focus their mission radar on Ebonyi State, much more than before. Much of missions activities are required amongst the people, especially in the dominant rural communities where the highest number of people reside. We need to checkmate this incessant incursion of Islam in the state. The church need to come up with a working strategy for that.

What need to be done and urgently are: enduring missions research needs to be carried out in the state. This will reveal a lot, thereby making aggressive rural missionary activities much easier. Again, training opportunities are needed among the people. Our big churches and mission agencies should start thinking that direction. This will go a long way in equipping and mobilizing church planters/missionaries into action. Other missions activities like, educational, medical and agricultural missions need to be intensified in the state like never before. Some of these are the simple strategies the Moslems are using to win indigenes over to Islam.

Wether we like it or not, Ebonyi State is still the "weeping baby" of Southeast when it comes to missions. It is a Macedonia calling for help, of which the Body of Christ needs to be intentional in rendering that much needed help. Our Lord Jesus reminded us that the fields are ripe, and ready for harvest (John 4:35). The case of Ebonyi is much more than being ripe; the fruits are now falling off in great numbers under our watch. This calls for concern, it calls for the urgency of the mission harvest among the people. It calls for concerted prayers in order to pull down every stronghold militating against soul winning in the state.

The Conservatives Versus The Liberals; The Two Great Opposites
By Success K. Uchime

For clarity sake, let's first have a clearer understanding of who these two ideologies are. This will enable us appreciate them, and the views they hold. A conservative is a person who is averse to change, and holds traditional values. He favors free enterprise, private ownership, and socially traditional ideas.

While a liberal promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise. Classical liberals emphasize the right of the individual to make decisions, even if the results dismayed their neighbours or injured themselves.

Having got a better understanding of these two philosophical ideologies, let's therefore consider their personalities. But let's state here that the conservatives and the liberals are two ideologies in human life that can be found in the fields of philosophy, politics and even theology. They're like two parallel lines that can never meet, no matter how one tries to bend them. They're really two great opposites in life, in every sense of it. In the field of philosophy, they're called conservative or liberal philosophers, in politics, they're referred to as, conservative or liberal politicians. While in theological circle, they're known as, conservative or liberal theologians/Christians.

In philosophy for example, they hold different philosophical ideologies or views, while in politics, they can't be joined in one political party. Just as in the US where the conservatives find cover under the Republican Party, while the Liberals dominate the Socialist Party. The two are two great opposites of themselves with different ideologies; they can never agree, this is just natural on its own.

In theological (church) circles also they can't hibernate or co-joined. This is so because they have no meeting point at all whatsoever when it comes to biblical doctrines. They're separated ways apart, and as such have been in serious conflict for time immemorial.

Biblically speaking, conservatives or better still conservative theologians (Christians) maintain or stand strong in the preservation of biblical doctrines. This is without dilution or compromise of any sort. They're very rigid when it comes to biblical doctrines: call them the rightists if you like. They believe that the Bible is the highest authority in human life and even the cosmos in its entirety.

As such, they maintain that no book(s) on earth can be equated or placed side by side with the Bible; they believe in the sanctity of the Holy Scriptures above every other thing. The Bible is their very existence.

Again, they believe that biblical doctrines stand on its own: cannot be changed, manipulated, or put in a such a way to satisfy personal quest for knowledge. They'll always refer to the Scriptures to authenticate or validate their actions. Biblical conservatives reject worldliness (the world and its lust); while making the Bible the basic rule in life, without watering it down.

While on the other hand, liberals, or better put, liberal theologians (Christians) are direct opposite of who the conservatives are, and all they believe. For instance, they believe and hold that the Bible can't answer all human questions, therefore the need to add other "scriptures" to make it look more cogent and reasonable. They believe so much in social gospel; dilution (watering down), or manipulate of the biblical doctrines to suit personal quest or interpretation.

Now let's x-ray some specific examples in the Bible in order to differentiate the two ideologies. In the Bible Jesus emphatically said: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John. 14:6). This is the biblical conservative view of the Bible. But the liberal theologians or Christians say NO! They say and believe there are so many ways to get to God. More so, the theory of "many ways lead to God."

Again, the Bible makes it clear in the creation, that two genders (male and female) were created: "So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female (Adam and Eve) He created them." (Gen. 1:27). This, also, is the biblical conservative view of human creation. But the liberals say NO again. They teach, and also hold the view that there are more than one gender - the "he-she" as some will put it.

Also, the Bible holds, that holy living is the only sure way to see God, that self-righteousness can never be a short-cut to heaven: "Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord" (Heb 12:14). But again, the liberal Christians see this differently. They say it doesn't matter the way one lives his or her life on earth, that God is a just God who'll always accept His people no matter their condition at death.

Furthermore, the conservative Christians believe in the sanctity of the church, as the very Kingdom of God on earth, where believers congregate, and God's words preached with every dynamism, and sinners made whole: "So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch" (Acts 11:26).

While on the other hand, the liberals downplay the role of the church in human life. They believe, and hold the view that the church is just an ordinary place of social gathering, that has no divine consequence whatsoever in human life. They simply equate the church the same way as a club house or any other social facilities for human socialization. Therefore, to the liberals, it doesn't matter whether you go to church or not, hence ones self-righteousness is all that is required to please God, and make heaven.

One can go and on to bring out this sharp opposites or differences between the conservatives and liberals. In a layman's word, the two ideologies are like light and darkness, cat and dog, that can't dwell together.

They're separated ways apart, just as God is to Satan. There's no meeting point whatsoever. In other words, one can't be a liberal, and at the same time be a conservative; it has never happened, and can't happen. One must find oneself in one side of the divide at a time.

WHO'LL BENEFIT FROM THE AGRIC-MISSIONS SUMMIT?

There are so many things participants will benefit at the forthcoming Agric-Missions Summit. They'll go home fulfilled!

First, farmers of all categories (crop and animal husbandry) will learn new techniques in farmwork. They'll go home with new innovations and initiatives that'll help them improve their farming activities.

Second, missionaries/church planters serving in urban and remote hinterlands will be empowered on ways and means to develop new tent-making efforts that'll make them become financially independent.

Then lastly, churches and mission agencies will be encouraged to develop ways of raising resources through agric-business to support their numerous mission projects. They'll start to develop farm settlements/plantations for their various missions.

We therefore encourage you to avail time to attend this life-changing Summit. The venue once again is, the CHRIST IMAGE CHURCH #2 Afikpo Street, behind Access Bank, opposite Tastia Restaurant off Ogoja Road, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. While the date remains Thursday, 29th August, 2024, 11 prompt.

See you there, thank you and God bless!

Raising The Next Generation Missionaries
By Success K. Uchime

Missions is a continuous process; it is perpetual and endless, it will endure until Jesus comes. Therefore, planning for the next generation of missionaries is a necessity. It should not be seen as inconsistent with the church, nor shall we live it to time and chance; it would not work that way.

The baton of missions needs to be handed over or passed on to the succeeding generation. This calls for a conscious and concerted efforts on the part of the church. We need to start now to prepare that next generation that will succeed the present generation of missionaries.

It needs to be pointed out that raising the next generation of missionaries is all about succession; raising people who will be able to run with the vision of global missions.

God Himself had to plan for a successor for Moses, in the person of Joshua. The reason being that His work must continue unabated. His vision of taking the people to the promised land needs to be fulfilled at all cost. Therefore, the reason for someone else to run with His vision.

Even our dear Apostle Paul, just like God, had a very good understanding of what succession is in the ministry, the reason he admonished his son, Timothy, to commit the work at hand to faithful people who will in turn teach others (2 Timothy 2:2). In the same vein, he also reminded Titus the reason he kept him in Crete: "For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and to appoint elders in every city as I commanded you" (Titus 1:5).

Paul had to plan on raising next generation of ministers through the men he had raised. This becomes a very noble Idea for the church to emulate; maintaining an unbroken circle of raising God's frontier force.

In raising the next generation a lot of issues need to be put into serious consideration. It is very obvious that the present generation cannot afford to raise anyhow generation. Just as in a relay team in sports; care needs to be taken in raising a competent team that will raise the trophy to everyone's admiration. There is the need to raise a generation that should be able to hold on to the vision of the Visioner - God Himself, who is the God of missions.

Therefore, in raising the next generation of missionaries, we need to consider these factors:
1. The next generation needs to be people who will serve God wholeheartedly - Caleb's generation is what is required here. He had a wholehearted devotion to God as we read in the scriptures. While others were bringing in bad reports, Caleb and Joshua brought in encouraging reports. "But my companions who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God" (Joshua 14:8). We need to prepare a generation that will serve the Lord with all their heart.

2. The next generation needs to be people who are faithful to the things of God - the Apostle in his admonition to his son Timothy said: "Commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others" (2 Timothy 2:2). The need for committing the work to faithful people need not be over flogged. Lack of it will bring a mess to the entire work of the ministry.

3. The next generation needs to be people who reverence God in all things - We need to raise a generation that reverences God; not a people who will commonize God, and His vision. But a people who with reverence, pursue God's vision to the end. The fear of God is paramount and sacrosanct in the pursuit of His service. "Honor everyone. Love the family of believers. Fear God. Honor the emperor" (1 Peter 2:17). The fear of God here is a reverential fear that comes out of total dependence and trust in God.

4. The next generation needs to be people who are rugged and resilient in the Kingdom business - a people who will declare their readiness like Caleb to take the land for God at all cost: "And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it"
(Numbers 13:30). The Apostle Paul was one missionary who exhibited robust ruggedness in his pursuit of God's vision. He never compromised; he never relented, neither did he lose focus of the goal set before him. But was ready to get results at all cost. He took risks for God, not minding the harm to his body. In his farewell message to the elders of the church in Ephesus, he said: "And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there" (Acts 20:22). Even when he was openly dissuaded not to embark on that mission to Jerusalem, he boldly stated: "For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus" (Acts 21:13). The apostle was fully convinced of what he believed in, and nothing was able to stand in-between that. This is the kind of the next generation we are talking about; a people who are totally sold out to the work of God like the prophets of old, the early apostle, and even other missionaries.

5. The next generation needs to be Kingdom minded people - they need to be a Kingdom lovers. People sold out to the things of the Lord, not things of the world. Worldly people cannot be effective in the pursuit of God's mandate. The reason Apostle Peter admonished the church to flee worldly lust: "I urge you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul" (1 Peter 2:1). Apostle Paul also maintained that if we as the church must overcome our world, there is the need to realize the nature of our warfare: "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers" (Ephesian 6:12). We therefore need to raise the next generation that has a proper understanding of the dynamics of spiritual warfare.

Therefore, in raising the next generation of missionaries the church needs to do all it can to raise people who have total commitment and devotion to God's Kingdom. People who are totally sold out to God, without any reservation. A people who like Queen Esther will declare, "If I perish, I perish" (Esther 4:16). It is only in doing so, that the preservation of the ideals of missionary enterprise will be achievable.

12 Great Lessons Learnt At The Benin Mission Conference Organized By Gospel Bankers Inc.

By Success K. Uchime

Participants, including myself went back home from Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria at the end of a four days (9th-12th April, 2024) of refreshing in the presence of Jehovah with twelve GREAT lessons!

It was the occasion of the General Assembly Meeting (GAM) organized by the Gospel Bankers Inc., based in Wari Delta State. The event was held at the Church of God Mission Int'l (Barm of Gilead), Sapele Road, Benin City.

The take-homes include, but not limited to:
1. It's one thing to be able to gather the harvest, it's another thing entirely to preserve it.
2. The success and quality of our missionary, evangelistic and church planting efforts are measured by the level of spiritual transformation that has taken place in the lives of our converts - second generation missionaries and pastors.
3. Today, the churches and missionary movements are raising a bunch of converts with cheap Christianity that can't stand the test of faith because of inadequate transformational discipleship teaching.
4. The churches and missionary movements must take consistent and deliberate efforts to engage converts with teachings and trainings that'll ensure growth and spiritual transformation of disciples in order to preserve the harvest.
5. The discipleship training models or manuals should include, but not limited to the following
(a). Repentance from dead
works.
(b). Restitution.
(c). The lifestyle of the new
birth.
6. The church age began and will end in a mighty spiritual revival. We shall see the "later rain," the outpouring of the Holy Spirit again (Joel 2:23, 28).
7. All followers of Jesus worldover must rise to pay the price of consistent prayer and fasting to birth the new revival.
8. The revival will bring cleansing and purging, and God's people will be brought to the beauty of holiness.
9. Again, the revival will produce a dynamic church and individual followers of Christ who are ready and willing to sacrifice their lives and resources to ensure that every creature is reached with the gospel of the Kingdom.
10. The task of reaching our world is not as impossible as it might seem; one constraint is that of inadequate labourers to harvest the lost souls.
11. If every follower of Jesus and the corporate church will bring back the gospel of missions into the center stage of their Kingdom service and enhance sacrificial giving and consistent prayer as a bridge to walk into every continent, nation and community to harvest lost souls, the task will be finished in no distant time.
12. The best Christian research of the present says that 3.4 billion people live outside the circle of effective gospel witness. Selah!
