TOPIC: THE GRACE OF GOD
TEXTS:
• 2 Corinthians 13:14
• 2 Timothy 2:1
• Ephesians 2:8–9
Over time, we have come to understand as believers that anyone who possesses the grace of God is supernaturally empowered to live a victorious life.
However, many Christians have not fully understood the scope of what the Bible calls grace or the administration of this grace.
Briefly this morning, we are going to see from Scriptures what the Bible calls grace, the dimensions of this grace, and possibly how to receive grace.
Let’s attempt to define grace...
Ephesians 1:3
(This is the definition of grace!)
The wrong definition of grace we have known and peddled over time has sponsored irresponsibility in many believers and created a laxity to press into the dimensions of grace.
With the “unmerited favor” definition, we have concluded that God just chooses to bless you and doors automatically open everywhere for you.
But the grace of God is not limited to favor alone, and the grace of God is not entirely unmerited.
THE DIMENSIONS OF GRACE
1 Peter 5:10
“The God of all grace” immediately suggests that grace is dimensional.
There are largely two dimensions of grace in theology (though not the only ones):
I. THE SAVING GRACE
Ephesians 2:8–9
There is the miracle of salvation accomplished on the cross.
Here, Jesus did everything for us on the cross, and we released our faith to receive it.
II. THE ENABLING GRACE
In this dimension of grace, God is not doing everything for you solely; you are taking responsibility through participation.
This grace does not get things done for you, but it empowers you to get things done.
Even though you are doing something, there is divine empowerment but there must be participation.
You are the one that starts, then God responds.
• You begin praying in tongues or interceding, then God takes over.
• You begin studying, then the Holy Spirit grants understanding that changes your life.
• You start building yourself toward the dream God has shown you, and He begins to orchestrate things in your favor.
For everyone Jesus healed in Scripture, there was participation.
(The microphone analogy)
A classic example of grace is the microphone I am holding.
The God of all grace is therefore the God of both the Saving Grace and the Enabling Grace.
