Enugu Diocese Created
On November 12 1962, His Holiness Pope John XXIII declared Enugu Diocese and Bishop John Cross Anyogu appointed the first Bishop.
With the elevation of Enugu to a Diocese from Onitsha Arch Diocese, the joy of the people knew no bounds. Then, just a year later, another cause for jubilation came with the Priestly ordination of Rev. Gregory Emehelu of Ebe. He became therefore, the first to be ordained for Enugu Diocese and on Enugu Soil. By the time the civil war broke out in July 1967, the young Diocese of Enugu had produced nine young indigenous priests to gather and tend the flock for Christ.
The 57 year old Diocese now has over 400 Diocesan Priests including the serving Bishop of the Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, an Auxiliary Bishop, Most Rev. Ernest Obodo and Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Anthony Gbuji.
Nsukka and Awgu Dioceses were also carved out from Enugu Diocese.
With the total population of faithful at 1,965,750 and counting, the Diocese has over 205 Parishes and four 4 chaplaincies spread across the 6 deaneries.
The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has indeed experienced God's faithfulness in the most tremendous way and has continued to beam the light of salvation through its core mandate of evangelization cutting across all spheres
