DAILY MANNA

DATE:06 Sept 2023

TOPIC:READY FOR WORK

KEY VERSE:
“So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus” (Acts 13:4).

READ:ACTS 13:1-7

MESSAGE:
During recruitment in wartime, barracks commanders are told to give a crash training to new intakes. They are asked to intensely drill the new soldiers and prepare them for the frontline in a matter of days or weeks. There is no time to waste in the battle to save the soul of the land from falling into the hands of marauders. Delay thus becomes very dangerous.

There is more urgency in the spiritual war to liberate the world from the greater danger of ending in hell if they die in sin. So, promptly after their preparation through fasting and praying, Barnabas and Saul are separated from a group of five prophets and teachers ministering to the Lord in Antioch, the third largest city in the Roman Empire. The Holy Ghost Himself commissions the duo “for the work whereunto I have called them”.

Our work for the Lord, preaching to win souls to the kingdom of God, is more demanding, decisive, and discretionary than any military campaign or other secular venture we can think of. It is about toiling to bring millions to Christ and, thereby, saving them from eternal damnation. It is about bringing joy to the heart of God so the suffering of His Son, Jesus Christ, will not be in vain. It challenges us to heed the call to evangelise in all seasons.

Every believer is a commissioned soul-winner. We have the same spiritual backing the Holy Ghost gave Barnabas and Saul. They prayed and fasted, seeking the mercy of God for a fruitful outreach. Immediately, they went into the field harvesting souls of sinners for heaven, restoring the backsliders, and strengthening the redeemed in the hope of final rest in Christ. Similar results are our portion today as we follow in their footsteps.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Every follower of Christ is a commissioned soul-winner.

DAILY MANNA
SATURDAY AUGUST 26, 2023
CONTENTMENT IS KEY
KEY VERSE: “And he hath brought thee near to him, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee: and seek ye the priesthood also?” (Numbers 16:10).
TEXT: NUMBERS 16:1-11
Contentment is a very rare virtue in the lives of many. The inordinate ambition to get a particular thing or position at all costs has led to so many betrayals, usurpation of legitimate authorities, destructive criticisms, propaganda and so on. In many countries, lack of contentment has led to looting of the treasury and even elimination of political opponents.
The rebellion of Korah, Dathan and Abiram was due to lack of satisfaction with the positions God had given them. This made them revolt against the leadership of Moses and Aaron. They, with two hundred and fifty famous and renowned princes of the assembly, rose up to challenge the two leaders, claiming they were arrogating too much authority to themselves. Moses responded by telling them that God would show who He had actually chosen.
God hates covetousness, which is the root cause of discontentment. Had Gehazi the servant of Elisha not allowed greed to get the better of him, he would perhaps have gotten a double portion of the Spirit of God as Elisha also received from Elijah. Similarly, Balaam lost his life and ministry due to greed.
“But godliness with contentment is great gain”. The antidote to lack of contentment is faith in the promises of God with patience to wait for the manifestation. Job did not allow his suffering to affect his faith and dependence on God. Whatever belongs to us as believers will come to us in God’s appointed time if we trust and obey Him, because promotion can only come from Him.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Waiting patiently upon God midwives enduring blessings eventually.

OUR MERCIFUL LORD

KEY VERSE: “The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy” (Psalm 103:8).

TEXT: PSALMS 103:1-22

Mercy, someone said, is a gift given to the guilty. In the law courts, it is usually when a case is concluded and the defendant found guilty that the defence pleads for mercy. Divine mercy then is God’s gift to sinful man who although deserves punishment for his sinfulness, yet receives unconditional pardon from a loving Lord.

In the text for today, the psalmist exalts and praises God with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for who He is. Several times in the passage, he uses the phrase “bless the Lord”. He did this in recognition of the mercies of the Lord and because of the many benefits that God has given to His children. The benefits include, forgiveness of sins, healing, satisfaction with good things and physical and spiritual renewal.

The psalmist further identifies God’s love and mercies as endless. “He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:10). He also sees God’s love and mercies as non-discriminatory. He, therefore, calls on every creature to bless the Lord.

We must recognise that “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed”. More so, it is “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost” (Titus 3:5). We must reciprocate this uncommon love and mercy of God by appreciating Him at all times and in all places, and serving Him to the uttermost!

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God’s mercies are inalienable and new every morning.
