TOPIC: CHRISTIAN COURTSHIP

TEXT: MATTHEW 1:18-25

18. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.
19. Then Joseph her husband, being [a]a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.
20. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is [b]conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
21. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name [c]Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
22. So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
23. “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
24. Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,
25. and [d]did not know her till she had brought forth her[e] firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.

MESSAGE:
Mary was the fiancée of Joseph, but she became pregnant of the Holy Spirit before their wedding. While Joseph thought of how to handle the situation, he had a dream in which he was encouraged to accept Mary as his intended wife, since her condition was divinely arranged.

He was told that Mary would give birth to a Son who should be called Jesus the Saviour.
The time frame between the day a brother and a sister agree regarding God's leading for marriage to each other and the day of wedding is the period of courtship. Before Joseph and Mary came together, that is, during their period of courtship, Mary was found with child of the Holy
Ghost. This conception was to define what direction their preparation for marriage would take. One important aspect of God's purpose for Christian marriage is to get godly offspring (Mal. 2:15).

Whereas courtship is intended to prepare the intending couple for the realization of God's purpose, many waste this period in lust, and wedding preparation. Learn from Joseph and Mary to keep your relationship pure. Perhaps this is coming late for the married but you can ask God to recover His purpose in your marriage by His mercy. Christian courtship should be based on purity and God's word.

PRAYER:
Father, please help me to please You during my period of courtship.

TOPIC: HOPE THAT PROVOKES PURITY

TEXT: 1 JOHN 3:1-3.
1. Behold What manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
2. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
3. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

MESSAGE:
Many persons have often wondered the justification for su***de. A particular service provider has “Life is Beautiful' as its advertisement slogan. The question always is: Why will someone want to kill him/herself in the midst of this beauty? My response has always been that when hope is lost, anything negative is possible. No matter how difficult life may be, a man of hope will get going. Our passage today speaks of the manner of love that God has for his children, and the expectation of being like Christ when we shall behold him at the end of time. The idea of be becoming like Christ fascinated John so much that he was ready to pay any price to actualize it.

This was the ground of his hope; it was not temporal but completely eternal. In the hope of being like Christ, he was willing to pursue the purity required. The evidence of our sincere desire to becoming like Christ is seen in our commitment to be pure. Until we begin to pursue purity, our profession of the Second Coming, the Millennial Reign and the Reunion with Christ is nothing but pretense.

PRAYER:
Lord, purify me until I become like You. Amen.

TOPIC: BEWARE OF SATAN'S HALF TRUTH

TEXT: MATTHEW 4:5-7

5. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6. and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In [their] hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' "
7. Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the LORD your God.' "

MESSAGE:
In our text today, we see the tempter - the devil - coming with another temptation. He quoted the Scripture to Jesus Christ, but out of context. He told Jesus to display his Sonship by throwing Himself down from a pinnacle because the scriptures said that angels were given charge to protect Him. Jesus rejected his temptation because He did not come to show off and God did not promise protection to people who tempt Him by acting foolishly.

When Scriptures are quoted out of context, they become half-truth and poison to the receiver. This is similar to what happens when wrongly prescribed drugs are given to patients. Sometimes, we see people quoting "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God," when they want to strengthen their position regarding idol worship. Many false teachers and prophets today are sending many simple-hearted believers to hell because of erroneous teachings on salvation, prosperity, Christianity without holiness and persecution etc., (Rom. 16:17-18). It is possible for one to have a head knowledge of the Scripture and not know God. The only way to avoid counterfeit is to be very familiar with the genuine. We should be thoroughly equipped in the word of God like our Master Jesus. to gain victory over temptations.

PRAYER:
Deliver me Lord from false teachers and help me to be more committed to the diligent study of Your word in Jesus name. Amen

TOPIC: DEALING WITH TEMPTATIONS

TEXT: MATTHEW 4:1-4

1. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
2. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
3. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
4. But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' "

MESSAGE:
James the Apostle in his epistle to Christians (James 1:14-15) said "But everyman is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed. This means that temptation occurs when sinful desires (lusts) draw, drag away or entice a person to deviate from the right path. Jesus, after 40 days of fasting, was hungry. This was a natural desire but the tempter cashed in on that desire to drag Him to showcase His authority by commanding stones to become bread to satisfy His hunger. Jesus, though in the flesh, did not succumb to that temptation. He rebuked the devil all the time with what is written in the word of God; which is the sword of the Spirit (Eph.6: 17).

Temptation in itself is not a sin, but yielding or succumbing to it, is sin. James 1: 15 says, lust when conceived, brings forth sin. As long as we are clothed in this flesh, many lustful desires many want to forcefully seek to be satisfied. These may include the desire for food, drink, s*x, stealing or killing. These can arise from our bodies directly, through others or from Satan. The most appropriate thing to do at such times is to use the relevant word of God for that temptation, and victory will certainly come!

PRAYER:
"Lead us not into temptation...." Amen!

TOPIC: TURNING TO THE LORD IN PRAYER & FASTING

TEXT: DANIEL 9:3-14

3. Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.
4. And I prayed to the LORD my God, and made confession, and said, "O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments,
5. "we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments.
6. "Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land.
7. "O Lord, righteousness [belongs] to You, but to us shame of face, as [it is] this day -- to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You.
8. "O Lord, to us [belongs] shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.
9. "To the Lord our God [belong] mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him.
10. "We have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets.
11. "Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him.
12. "And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster; for under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem.
13. "As [it is] written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth.
14. "Therefore the LORD has kept the disaster in mind, and brought it upon us; for the LORD our God [is] righteous in all the works which He does, though we have not obeyed His voice.

MESSAGE:
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the 40-day Lenten season. It is a very important Church season that reminds believers in Christ, how Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights in preparation for His earthly ministry (Matt.4:1-2). In our text, we saw how Daniel sought the Lord in prayer, supplication, fasting, sackcloth and ashes. This was because he discovered through the study of the word of God, that the desolation (captivity) of Jerusalem would last seventy years. He also found out that they had completed the prophesied number of years. Daniel then prayed and fasted for the Lord to fulfil His promise of release from captivity, made through Jeremiah, the Prophet. Daniel in praying for the nation of Israel, included himself with the entire people, who had transgressed the conditions of the covenant they had with God.

Fasting is a very important spiritual exercise. Jesus taught that some levels of spiritual forces cannot go out except by prayer and fasting (Matt. 17:21). Fasting unlocks the doors of blessings and deals with satanic forces that hinder breakthroughs. It is important however, that fasting should not be done to seek the praise of men (Matt. 6:16-18). Fasting should be supported by a life of humility, prayer, righteousness and sound knowledge of God's word (Isa. 58:3-10). As we enter this year's Lenten season, let us turn to the Lord in prayers and fasting.

PRAYER:
Ask for grace and strength to fast and pray regularly as part of your Christian life.
