OPEN HEAVEN DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: SUNDAY MAY 24TH 2026

THEME: SPIRITUALLY DISCERNED III

MEMORISE: And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, this is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21

READ: Genesis 26:1-6
1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

2 And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

4 And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5 Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6 And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:

MESSAGE
Spiritual discernment is crucial for every Christian, especially when making critical life decisions such as choosing a marriage partner, where to live, and who to associate with. Some Christians have married evil people disguised as angels of light because they lacked spiritual discernment. They embraced Jezebels and Nabal’s idolatrous and foolish people who can lead them astray and ruin their lives.

Believers need God's direction to know the right people to marry. For example, when Abraham wanted to choose a wife for Isaac, he gave his servant specific instructions about the type of woman who would be suitable for his son and fit to partake in the covenant God had made with him (Genesis 24:1-8). He told his servant to go to his country and kindred to take a wife for Isaac. This is the first criterion for a Christian's choice in marriage; he or she must marry a fellow Christian because our country as believers is heaven. Some believers have disregarded this criterion to their detriment.

Apart from a believer ensuring that whoever he or she wants to get married to is a Christian, it is also crucial to ask God to show him or her the right person among His numerous children. Some Christian ladies have been carried away by a suitor's charisma, so they didn't ask God if he was a suitable spouse for them or not. Likewise, some Christian men have allowed a lady's commitment in church to blind them to what God is saying about her character. When it comes to the issue of marriage, a believer cannot afford to be carried away by external things and miss the Holy Spirit's direction. If you are still single, I pray that you will allow the Lord, and not your emotions, physical preferences, or human calculations, to guide you in your choice of a marriage partner, in Jesus' name.

Where to live is another crucial decision that requires spiritual discernment. In Genesis 13:10-13, Lot didn't inquire from God before choosing to pitch his tent towards S***m. He found himself in the midst of sinners and wicked people, and eventually, he lost his home when God destroyed S***m and Gomorrah because of the sins of their inhabitants. Only spiritually discerning people will know whether God wants them to relocate or not, and where to relocate to.

Beloved, don't make critical life decisions based solely on your judgment and understanding. Seek God's counsel and remain spiritually discerning to know what He wants you to do.

PRAYER POINT
Lord, please help me not to be insensitive to Your guidance.

28 GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH!

1. Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah!
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven! Bread of heaven!
Feed me now and evermore (2ce)

2. Open Thou the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow:
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer! strong deliverer!
Be Thou still my strength and shield (2ce)

3. If I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside:
Bear me through the swelling torrent,
Land me safe on Canaan's side:
Songs of praises! songs of praises!
I will ever give to Thee (2ce)

4. Saviour, come! We long to see Thee,
Long to dwell with Thee above;
And to know in full communion,
All the sweetness of Thy love.
Come, Lord Jesus! Come, Lord Jesus!
Take Thy waiting people home (2ce)

MEMORISE: Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22

BIBLE READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:18-20
18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

MESSAGE:
Setting boundaries when relating with the opposite s*x is not old-fashioned. It is an important thing to do, especially when there is an intense attraction or infatuation for a member of the opposite s*x. That intense attraction or infatuation can be a temptation from the devil to distract a fellow from achieving his or her goals and pull such a fellow away from God's plan for his or her life.

Samson was a young man who was infatuated with Delilah. He could not Control his lust, and it led to a disruption of God's agenda for his life and God's people (Judges 16:4-21). His relationship with Delilah crushed his future.

My dear child, do not think you are a Superhero when it comes to relating with the opposite s*x. In 1 Corinthians 10:12, the Bible says, *"Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall."* You should set boundaries in your conversations with members of the opposite s*x. You have no business going into a romantic relationship if you are not ready for marriage. Do not allow unholy communication or relationships to disrupt God's plans for your life with members of the opposite s*x.

*Quiz:* What was the consequence of Samson's relationship with Delilah?

KEY POINT:
Do not engage in unholy interactions

MEMORY VERSE: "A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habita-tion." Psalm 68:5.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 21:9-19.
[9]And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
[10]Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
[11]And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.
[12]And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
[13]And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.
[14]And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
[15]And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
[16]And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.
[17]And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.
[18]Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.
[19]And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.

INTRODUCTION: A single parent is a parent without a marriage partner, widowed, separated, de-serted, divorced or never married; one who is in charge of his or her household. The reason for becoming a single parent is diverse. For some, it is a deliberate desire/preference while other situations such as single-person adoption, unwanted pregnancy, r**e, etc. force others into it. Widowhood is the state of a man or a woman whose spouse is dead. On some occasions, the experiences of both single parents and widows/widowers are quite similar. God, therefore, commands us to protect these people in our churches and communities (Exodus 22:22).

OUTLINE
1. GOD'S DISPOSITION
2. OUR RESPONSIBILITY

GOD'S DISPOSITION
God is highly concerned about single parents and widows/widowers. He is the Father to the fatherless and the protector of widows (Psalm 68:5). God does not want them to be afflicted or treated badly. He hears them when they cry. God save anyone who maltreats them may invite His wrath (Exodus 22:22-24). To maltreat could be to ne-glect, abuse or take advantage of. God wants us to defend them (Isaiah 1:17). He sustains and relieves widows (Psalm 146:9). God makes provi-sions for them in His law (Deuteronomy 10:18; 26:12-13). He preserves the fatherless children and expects widows to trust Him (Jeremiah 49:11).

OUR RESPONSIBILITY
Irrespective of the cause, single parents and widows/widowers should be treated with love and acceptance. Provision of a support system such as financing the repair of properties/belongings, giving scholarships for the children's education, welfare support, etc. will go a long way in helping widows and/or single par-ents live a better life. Sharing words of encour-agement via text messages or phone calls will provide emotional stability.

Encourage single parents and the widowed to discover/fulfil their purpose from God's view-point. Provide an environment for single parents and the widowed to learn skills that can help them sustain and provide for themselves and their children. Help them to develop a close relationship with God who can heal them from wounds, bitterness and resentment they might be experiencing. Family members are enjoined to take care of them so that they will not suffer. This is seen as proof of commitment to God (Matthew 25:34-40). The widowed and children of single parents should not be abused, stigmatised or en-slaved but should be helped (James 1:27. Galatians 6:10).

CONCLUSION: The church should be a family of faith, a real community where burdens are shared, friendships are formed and support is given as we journey in faith together.

QUESTIONS
1. What are the likely causes of single-parenthood?

2. Mention five responsibilities of believers to sin-gle parents, widows and widowers around them.
