DEALING WITH THE QUESTION OF SIN.
1 John 1:8-9 KJ21
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. [9] If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
God has made a comprehensive plan for the forgiveness of sins of all mankind. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ is all that the justice of God demands for the cure of sin. The demand of sin is fully met in the atoning blood of Jesus Christ.
Justice demands that without the shedding of blood, there shall be no remission of sin (Heb. 9:22). Jesus Christ fulfilled the demand of justice on behalf of all that ever lived and would ever live.
To appropriate or personally receive the benefit of this finished work, any man now living must understand what it takes to benefit from the liberty from sin purchased by Jesus Christ for those to be recognised as sons of God.
This is what our opening scripture passage is talking about. John the beloved said: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. This means that every man must acknowledge the truth that he is a sinner without the capacity to save himself.
Romans 3:23 KJ21 ..for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God...
He then went ahead to show us how to connect to the escape route that God made for all humanity, for those who are willing to take that advantage and be saved. Salvation is voluntary. Every man must exercise his free will to accept or reject God's offer to be free from sin and condemnation.
Our passage continued by saying:
[9] If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Here is what we need to understand. What does it mean to confess our sins?
There are two levels of confession that are essentially to be totally free from the plague of sin.
The first level of confession is Christ. We must confess Christ because He was made sin for us. Confessing Jesus gives access to eternal life and salvation provided by Him. This is important because He is our sin bearer (Heb. 9:28). He knew no sin but was made sin for us (2Cor. 5:21). He became the sacrificial lamb for the sin of all mankind (John 1:29,35,36).
Why, and How Must We Confess Jesus?
Romans 10:8-10 KJ21
But what saith it? "The Word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth and in thy heart," that is, the word of faith which we preach: [9] that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
This is the entry level into the grace provided by the Lord Jesus Christ for all humanity. I make bold to say that this is the only way to salvation of mankind according to the scriptures. If your religion or act of worship omitted this, be certain you are still in danger of judgement.
The second level of confession is specific wrongdoings that plague the mind. This is not just for new believers but also a recurrent act for all saints of God. This is critical for two reasons; because it takes care of the burden of guilt and addresses the legal accusations of the enemy as to the righteousness of man. Let me explain both for clarity purposes.
There is a way the devil accuses both new believers and old saints alike. On one hand, he burdens people and taunt them with guilt from their past misdeeds. Although, God has forgiven and forgotten the sins, but satan harasses the minds of individuals with past sins, making it look like the sins are too grievious to be forgiven. There then exists a lingering burden of sin although forgiven by God, but the individual has not been able to forgive themselves because of the harassment from the accuser. When we confess such sins, we transfer the burden of guilt to the cross where it rightly belongs, thus breaking the manipulative power of the accuser.
On the other hand, there is also the legal issue of trespass that grants the accuser the privilege to our God-given liberty as sons of God.
Let's look at the scriptures to understand this dimension of the truth.
1 John 3:2-10 KJ21
Beloved, now we are the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is. [3] And every man that hath this hope in Him purifieth himself, even as He is pure. [4] Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law, for sin is the transgression of the law. [5] And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him is no sin. [6] Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not; whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him. [7] Little children, let no man deceive you. He that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous. [8] He that committeth sin is of the devil, for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. [9] Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for His seed remaineth in him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God. [10] By this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither is he that loveth not his brother.
There is a boundary of operation within which all saints are free to exercise their liberty in God. Purity and righteousness are the bar of this boundary. Once we step out of bound to sin and hate, we have entered the enemy's territory, and the accuser of the brethren will take advantage of that opportunity to torment us. He will stand at our right hand of power to resist our authority. This is because we have trespassed on his boundary.
The truth is this: while still in the flesh, we are bound to trespass often because there are enemies landmine of temptations all around us in our every day, and we may not live and walk in the spirit at all times like the scriotures prescrbed. Anytime we slip from our steadfastness of living and walking in the spirit, we fall for the temptations and trespass into the enemy's territory.
The good news is that Jesus' sacrifice also covers our trespasses.
1 John 2:1-2 KJ21
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. [2] And He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
This is why Jesus taught clearly in the model prayer that we should ask our heavenly father for forgiveness of our debt or trespasses.
Matthew 6:12-15 KJ21
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory for ever. Amen. [14] For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. [15] But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
So, when we trespass beyond the boundary of purity and righteousness into the enemy's territory, we owe a duty to confess our trespass to God and seek His remedy. Here also is the good news:
1 John 1:9-10 KJ21
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [10] If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.
When God forgives, He erases or blots out the records of sin or trespass. So, no man or enemy can legally take the evidence against you. Herein is the love of God and the power of the atonement of sin by Christ Jesus.
I hope this helps someone. Blessings.
