TITLE: Contend for the Faith Part 2

In the book of Acts 2, you will see the marching orders. In verses 40, 41, and 42, you will see the apostolic culture: “They continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, in fellowship, in prayers, in breaking of bread.”

When you highlight that word “doctrine,” you will see that it is singular in this context, whereas you can have doctrines of devils and doctrines of men.

Jesus was trying to show them in the book of Mark 7:13 that because of their traditions, they have made the Word of God of non-effect. That means the traditions of men can make the Word of God of non-effect.

When you see that the Word of God does not gain supremacy in the life of individuals and is not exalted above men’s opinions, it means that the religious spirit has begun to encroach.

You need to understand that, as a preacher, you must be firm. For instance, you will notice that in the generation we are in, this Gen Z generation, everybody is opinionated. So, as a pastor, people have a certain way in which they expect you to pastor them.

They say, “If you don’t pastor us this way, we won’t come to church.” This was one of the things I had to struggle with when we started.

I was wondering, “What kind of generation are we living in?” They operate according to their senses; they are driven by emotions, accustomed to trends, and shaped by narratives. Little wonder that, when you look around, we rarely find men of capacity, we rarely find men of authority, because people have exalted their emotions and feelings above the Word of God.

They have made the Word of God of no effect, and Paul was instructing Timothy that a time is coming when men will not be able to endure sound doctrine, but after their own lusts shall heap to themselves teachers because they have itching ears.
