THE ABUNDANCE OF THINGS

TODAY’S QUOTE: GOD WANTS US TO HAVE THINGS BUT HE DOES NOT WANT THINGS TO HAVE US

Scriptural Verse: “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth” (Luke 12:15).

God is the creator of all things both living and non-living. When God finished creation in Genesis, we are told that God saw everything that He made, and behold it was very good (Genesis 1: 31). What God created was not just good, it was very good. So, things are not just good there are very good. It was God who created things that we have created other things from. God is not against us having things, as a matter of fact He wants us to have all things because He created everything for us. The book of Revelations says that God created all things for His pleasure. If God gets pleasure from things, then we should understand why as humans we desire things.

There is no human on earth who hates to have things. There is no human on earth that can survive on earth without things. We come into this world with nothing, but as soon as we are born, we are given a pair of clothing, a pair of shoes, and on and on it goes we begin to accumulate things. As children we have our stash of toys, and we will fight with anyone who dares to deprive us of our things. As we grow older for most of us our sense of worth becomes tied to what we have. Society also values us and honors us based on what we have; hence the sometimes-insatiable drive to acquire more things sometimes at any cost.

Jesus comes on the scene and changes the order letting us know that contrary to vox populi a man’s worth is not contingent on what he possesses. He was not saying possessing things is wrong; rather what He was saying was that who we are and what we are worth in life is far much more than what we possess. On the contrary Jesus wants us to possess things and God wants us to have the abundance of all things. What He does not want is for things to have us. Because of the fickleness of things God does not want your identity tied to something that can just evaporate in one day; neither does He want you to sell your soul because you want to own things.

In Matthew 6:33 Jesus tells us to seek God’s kingdom first and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto us. In Deuteronomy 28 Moses lets us know that when we serve God with joyfulness of heart and gladness it results in the abundance of all things, but when we become crafty in our dealings with God it will lead to bo***ge to our enemies and a life in want of all things. So, to truly enjoy the things of life and to have them in abundance you must settle the issue of your service to God and your commitment to see His kingdom grow. God will entrust the abundance of all things to the man who is willing to use them to advance his kingdom and will not place things above God but will give God first place irrespective of the things in his life.

PROPHETIC INSTRUCTION
God has put all things under your feet (Psalm 8:6), don’t become a slave to what you have been given authority and power over.

CONFESSION
I enjoy the abundance of all things as I put God first place in my life.
