THE DISCIPLE CAN NEVER RISE ABOVE HIS MASTER

BIBLE READING: LUKE 6:40; JOHN 15:18; EPHESIANS 5:1

"The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord..." Matthew 10:24 - 25a (KJV)

The Process of Discipleship is God's Designated Procedure whereby the "discipler" (the master) transfers all of his Virtues, Knowledge and Character to his disciple. Becoming just like the master must be the Ultimate Goal of every Genuine disciple (2 Kgs. 2:1-15). This relationship is extremely important because it is through it that the foundation of all that the disciple will ever become is laid. In other words, an Authentic Disciple of Jesus Christ must consciously and strategically position himself to absorb and reflect everything that the Lord Himself is. The Master needs to be seen through His Disciples and not obscured by the latter.

There is one key reason why a disciple can never be above his master: Without the master there can never be a disciple in the first place. The same way there can be no house without a foundation and there can be no child without a father, there can never be a disciple without a master. A disciple may not be above his master but if he lives to his full potential, he can eventually become like his master. It is similar to a child becoming like his own parents at maturity when he starts having his own children (2 Tim. 2:2). This is the case because the Discipleship Process is a continuum with several parties playing their own individual roles.

Now, a disciple might achieve significantly more than his master but that does not place him above his master. This is just the same way a child could end up becoming a much better parent than his own parents without changing the positioning of the parent-child relationship between him and his own parents (Prov. 4). Always remember these words of Wisdom: "Overtaking may be allowed but certainly not overthrowing." As True Disciples, we must maintain an Attitude of Submission and Honour towards our masters, whether our Earthly masters or our Ultimate Heavenly Master. No matter what we assume we may have achieved, we must shun pride and instead focus on becoming just like our master.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we exalt Your Holy Name. O Lord, we come before You with Humility, submitting wholly to Your Lordship over our lives. We bind every spirit of rebellion that causes us to disregard Your Headship over our lives and the Authority of the human masters You have placed over us in Jesus' Mighty Name. Amen.

THEY WERE CALLED CHRISTIANS FIRST IN ANTIOCH

BIBLE READING: ACTS 26:15-32; ROMANS 8:1-35

"Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the Church and taught a great many people. And the Disciples were first called Christians in Antioch." Acts 11:25-26 (NKJV)

One of the Most Outstanding Truths that we, as Genuine Christian believers, must take note of is that the Early Church did not refer to themselves or each other as Christians. On the contrary, that was a moniker or title bestowed upon them by the people of Antioch. This was due to the fact that the Christian believers in Antioch expressed a Culture far different from the culture of the city where they were domiciled. Antioch was historically a Roman city that was influenced by the Roman and Greek ways of life. While the people observed the conduct of the believers in Antioch, a new title or name was forged by the former for the latter, leading to them being called Christians simply because they were True followers of Christ Jesus (Jn. 13:34-35). Preceding this era as documented in the Book of the Acts of the Apostles, there was no particular name designated for those who followed Jesus Christ apart from Believers, Followers, and Disciples.

The term "Christian" is derived from the original Greek word “Christianos,” which itself is jointly derived from two Greek words “Christ and tian.” The word "Christ" (or "Christos") literally means “Anointed” while the word "tian" means “little.” Therefore, the compound word “Christian” literally means “little anointed ones.” During His Earthly Ministry and His Life as God Incarnate, the Lord Jesus was referred to as "Mashiyach" or "the “Messiah” meaning “the Anointed One.” We are His “little anointed ones” who have been anointed by His Holy Spirit specifically to act as His Ambassadors in this world. Interestingly, the term "Christian" is found only three times in the entire Holy Bible (Acts 11:26; Acts 26:28; 1 Pet. 4:16).

In this our Present Age, the word “Christian” is normally viewed from both the positive and negative perspectives. Howbeit, the vast majority of the First Century followers of Jesus were mostly persecuted or killed simply because they were not ashamed to identify as Christians. After a careful study of the Holy Scriptures, we can identify Three (3) Defining Marks that separated the Christian believers of Antioch from the prevalent culture of their city:

(1.) THEIR DEVOTION TO CHRIST: This is evident as seen in the Second Verse of the Eleventh Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles according to the Amplified Bible Translation: "... When he arrived and saw what Grace (Favour) God was bestowing upon them, he was full of Joy; and he continuously exhorted (warned, urged and encouraged) them all to cleave unto and remain Faithful to and devoted to the Lord with [resolute and steady] Purpose of heart." The lives of the Christian believers in Antioch were remarkably distinguished from the rest of the society around them. Their morals were by far different from the norms that were prevalent in the city of Antioch. Nevertheless, the Christian believers therein considered themselves as part of the city in stark contrast to the isolationists amongst the Jewish community there. The Christian believers presented as a rare breed for many in Antioch because they were neither isolationist nor idolatrous.

(2.) THEIR LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER: This is also evident in the Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth verses of the same Eleventh Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles: "... Then the Disciples, EACH ACCORDING TO HIS ABILITY, DETERMINED TO SEND RELIEF TO THE BRETHREN DWELLING IN JUDEA. This they also did and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul." The Love these Christian believers manifested towards one another stood out most of all as they lived with each other daily.

The rest of the community observed the way they treated not just each other but also those who were outside their group. They did not live in the manner of the world around them, but they loved the Covenant outsiders by practising an Inclusive Gospel instead of adhering to an exclusive cult.

(3.) THEIR STRONG PASSION AND COMMITMENT TO THE TEACHINGS OF CHRIST: The New Living Translation of the Twenty-fifth to Twenty-sixth verses of the same Eleventh Chapter of the Acts of the Apostles expresses this Profound Truth in a wonderful way: "... Then Barnabas went on to Tarsus to look for Saul. When he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. BOTH OF THEM STAYED THERE WITH THE CHURCH FOR A FULL YEAR, TEACHING GREAT NUMBERS OF PEOPLE. (It was there at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians)." They exhibited an intense Zeal for and Commitment to the Teachings of Christ because they invested so much time in receiving the required training they needed in order for them to be effective in the Work of Christ and also for them to wholly manifest the Life of Christ.

Being a Christian is essentially a Way of Life whereby we seek to identify closely with the Lord Jesus. Following Him is actually a Lifestyle Choice that is easily observed whenever we do the following:

(i.) Accept Him as our Personal Saviour and Lord.

(ii.) Decide to believe even at times when it seems impossible.

(iii.) Choose to love those whom we would rather despise.

(iv.) Choose to value God far above every other attachment.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we glorify Your Holy Name. O Lord, we pray that You might help us in this Season to reflect the Life and True Essence of Christ as His Disciples in Jesus' Mighty Name. Amen.

ARE YOU REALLY HIS DISCIPLE?

BIBLE READING: JOHN 8:30-47; MARK 3:14-35; JOHN 21:19-25

"He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His Disciples?” Then they reviled him and said, "You are His Disciple, but we are Moses' disciples." John 9:27-28 (NKJV)

By the most fundamental of definitions, a Disciple is actually a follower or someone who follows and learns life lessons from his own master. As far as this Planet Earth is concerned, everybody must be a follower of someone or of something. This includes but isn't limited to your boss, your parents, your lecturer, a mentor, a celebrity you may admire, etc. All of these may make sense to you, but as the Truly Chosen of God, all of them are meaningless. The Only Standard or Rule given to Mankind by God to emulate is the Life of Christ Jesus, His Only Begotten Son. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Only Valid Standard. Therefore we must look unto Him (Jesus Christ) and always defend the Gospel of the Father (God Almighty) in the same manner He always did: "LOOKING UNTO JESUS, the Author and Finisher of our Faith, Who for the Joy that was set before Him endured the Cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the Right Hand of the Throne of God" (Heb. 12:2).

Every Disciple of Christ Jesus is a disciplined follower of His who is totally committed to adopting His Lifestyle, Teachings, and Values through Intimacy with Him. According to Mark 3:14, the Lord Jesus called Twelve normal men from various walks of life so that they may be with Him and learn from Him before deploying them to the Field to reap the Overripe Harvest. The manner in which Jesus chose His Disciples is the same way every other great leader including even satan himself recruits and trains their own disciples to spend time with them, believe in them and furthermore declare what they believe. Jesus Himself laid a Basic Foundation by replicating Himself in His Disciples through Teachings and Practices He imparted to them that transformed their lives. This Transformation which the Disciples of Jesus experienced was not limited to the Inward Man but was also viewed by the society who then bestowed upon them the famous moniker “Christians” in Antioch, thus confirming that they were truly like Christ *(Acts 11:26).

Becoming a Disciple of Jesus in this modern day and age is erroneously misunderstood by more than a few uninformed people to mean joining a Church or joining its workforce. Simply identifying with a Local Church Assembly and religiously attending its programmes can never confer the label of a Disciple of Christ on anyone. The criteria for becoming a Disciple of Jesus haven't changed even in this Era today because the same works the people of Antioch experienced are also meant to be done by the Disciples of Jesus even to a much greater extent today, hence He told them: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the Works that I do he will do also; AND GREATER WORKS THAN THESE HE WILL DO, BECAUSE I GO TO MY FATHER" (Jn. 14:12).

Your identity does not only consist of your name or your value system but more of the Acts and Good Works that God ordained for you in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2-10). In order to remain an Authentic Disciple of the Lord Jesus, you need to spend Quality Time with Him in Fellowship, abide in the Word of God continually, and be swift to obey all His Commandments. You need to carefully examine your life and sincerely ask yourself this question: Am I really a Genuine Disciple of Jesus? (Selah)

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we magnify Your Glorious Name. O Lord, we pray that You help us become True Disciples of the Lord so that our lives would glorify You in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.

UNDERSTANDING THE POWER OF SACRIFICE IN DISCIPLESHIP

BIBLE READING: ISAIAH 14:12-14; HEBREWS 11:24-27; LUKE 9:23; PHILIPPIANS 3:8; JOHN 12:24-25

“Then Peter said, “See, we have left all and followed You.” So, He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the Sake of the Kingdom of God, who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the Age to come Eternal Life.” Luke 18:28-30 (NKJV)

Becoming a Disciple of Jesus Christ is more than just a mere mental assent to a set of Doctrines; it is a wholehearted commitment to follow Him. This Journey is not a solitary, one-time decision but rather a continuous, daily choice to walk in His Footsteps, a Path that necessitates self-denial and personal sacrifice: "Then He said to them all, 'If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me'" (Lk. 9:23). IIn the School of Discipleship, we are called to live by Foundational Principles that refine our character and direct our paths. These Principles serve as the Structural Framework for a life built upon a Solid Foundation (1 Tim. 3:15). Among these Spiritual Pillars, the "Code of Sacrifice" carries a Weight of Supreme Significance.

Sacrifice is the Bedrock of our Walk with God; it is the Primary Way we embody the Essence of Christ Jesus Himself. Romans 12:1(NKJV) appeals to us:
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the Mercies of God, that you present your bodies a Living Sacrifice, Holy, acceptable to God, which is your Reasonable Service." This means being prepared to endure Trials and relinquish personal comforts to advance the Kingdom of God. Furthermore, Sacrifice requires the "death" of our selfish ambitions as we surrender our will to God's Divine Plan. While the fall of satan was rooted in pride and self-exaltation, Jesus teaches that True Greatness is found in the seed that falls into the ground and dies (Jn. 12:24). It is about prioritizing God’s Agenda over our own, following Christ’s Example of Humility and Obedience, even to the point of death (Phil. 2:5-11).

As True Disciples, Sacrifice must become our Lifestyle—a daily Dedication of our Time, Talents, and Resources for the Sake of the Gospel. It demands that we let go of our carnal desires and embrace God’s Will, regardless of the personal cost. In our willingness to give up what we hold dear, we mirror the Selflessness of Christ and discover Genuine Fulfillment in serving Him and others. Mark 8:34-35 (NKJV) reminds us that Sacrifice is the non-negotiable Gateway to Christlikeness: "Whoever desires to come after Me, LET HIM DENY HIMSELF, and TAKE UP HIS CROSS, and FOLLOW ME. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but WHOEVER LOSES HIS LIFE FOR MY SAKE AND THE GOSPEL'S WILL SAVE IT."

Ultimately, Discipleship requires us to embrace Sacrifice as an Essential Thread in the Fabric of our Journey with Christ. When we willingly offer our lives and ambitions to the Father, we align ourselves with His Eternal Purposes and unlock the Abundant Life He promised (Jn. 10:10). As the Apostle Paul declared in Philippians 3:8(NKJV): "Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the Excellence of the Knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for Whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ." Jesus Christ invites us to experience the Richness of His Grace as we follow Him faithfully. Through Sacrificial Living, we do more than just follow a Teacher; we reflect His Character and find our Ultimate Satisfaction in His Holy Presence.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the Selfless Sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ, on the Cross for our sakes. O Lord, please grant us the Grace to die daily to self as we are transformed into Your Likeness. Empower us to live daily lives of Total Surrender to You in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen.

*UNDERSTANDING THE POWER OF LOYALTY IN DISCIPLESHIP*

*BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 26:14-25; ACTS 1:15-26; PROVERBS 20:6; PSALM 78:8; PROVERBS 27:10; PSALM 12:1-2*

*“For I desire and delight in [Steadfast] Loyalty [Faithfulness in the Covenant Relationship] rather than Sacrifice, and in the Knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.” Hosea 6:6 (AMP)*

In the Journey of Discipleship, Loyalty acts as a Spiritual Anchor, holding the Christian believer steady against the shifting tides of life. Without this Steadfastness, a Disciple remains perilously vulnerable, easily swayed by every passing doctrine or whisper of doubt that threatens to undermine their Relationship with the Master and their community. The Apostle Paul warns of the danger of being Spiritual orphans without such grounding: *"... that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting..."* (Eph. 4:14 NKJV).

In the Kingdom of God, Loyalty is not merely a suggestion or a personality trait; it is a Foundational Principle that grounds our Faith and solidifies our Commitment to God’s Kingdom. It is a Tapestry woven from the Virtues of Allegiance, Faithfulness and Obedience. We see this modelled in the House of God, where Loyalty is the Prerequisite for Intimacy and Service. The author of Hebrews emphasized the Faithfulness of Christ and those who preceded Him *(Heb. 3:5-6).* To "hold fast" is the Ultimate Expression of Loyalty. Therefore, let us strive to be like the "Faithful and Wise servant..." *(Matt. 24:45),* understanding that our Loyalty to God is proven through our Loyalty to the Truth, to our leaders, and to one another. When we remain anchored, we do not merely survive the storm; we become a Fixed Point of Hope for others to follow.

If Loyalty is the Life blood of the Kingdom, then disloyalty is like a cancer that threatens to devour the community from within. The Holy Scriptures urge us to be vigilant in our relationships, guarding our hearts against those who might work against the welfare of the Kingdom or its leaders *(Prov. 25:19).* Interestingly, God often values Loyalty above human perfection. He searches for hearts He can fully trust, hearts like that of Moses. Though Moses was not without his flaws, his Unwavering Faithfulness earned him a Unique Place in God’s Sight – *“Not so with My servant Moses; He is Faithful in all My House"*(Num. 12:7). Similarly, David’s refusal to harm king Saul, despite having every opportunity to do so, exemplifies the High Calibre of Loyalty God desires. David chose Honour over convenience and Integrity over ambition *(1 Sam. 24:4-8).*

On the other hand, the betrayal of Judas serves as a haunting reminder of the cost of a divided heart. His disloyalty led not only to the Betrayal of Christ but to his own tragic downfall: *“Then one of the Twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. So, from that time, he sought opportunity to betray Him”* (Matt. 26:14-16). The subsequent selection of Matthias to replace him underscores a Vital Truth: In the Work of God, Loyalty is an Indispensable Qualification for Leadership *(Acts 1:15-26).* We are called to learn from these histories, striving to embody the Integrity of our Lord Jesus Christ rather than the treachery of Judas.

In sum, Loyalty is more than a moral choice; it is the very heart of what it means to follow Christ. By emulating the Faithfulness of Moses and the Honour of David, we strengthen the Body of Christ and honour our Calling. As Proverbs 3:3-4 instructs, we must bind Love and Faithfulness around our necks and write them upon our hearts. In doing so, we find Favour with both God and man. Let us be known as a people of Unwavering Loyalty, standing as beacons of Light and Trustworthiness in a world that so desperately needs both.

*PRAYER:*

Heavenly Father, we repent for the moments we have allowed our Loyalty to waver. O Lord, please help us to be Faithful in our words and steadfast in our actions, reflecting Your Heart to everyone we meet. May our lives be a Testament to Your Integrity and bring Honour to Your Holy Name in Jesus' Mighty Name. Amen.

THE FIVE SIGNS OF A TRUE DISCIPLE

BIBLE READING: ISAIAH 8:16; JOHN 8:31-32; PSALM 37:31; MATTHEW 28:18-20

"A Disciple is not above his Teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for a Disciple that he be like his Teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the Master of the House Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of His Household!" Matthew 10:24-25(NKJV)

The Principle of Discipleship is usually referred to but often misunderstood within the Context of our Christian Faith. The sad and unfortunate fact is that it is fairly common to see many of the so-called "disciples" vaunting themselves around sanctimoniously as they look down on new converts to the Lord with disdain. The major issue with all these pompous deluded "old prophets" is that they are so vain, full of ignorance and presumption. This is one of the major reasons the Holy Bible declares that "Therefore by their fruits you will know them" (Matt. 7:20). Simply put, not everybody who claims to be a Disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ even understands that there are certain Fundamental Traits or Characteristics of every Genuine Disciple.

There are Five Major Signs or Traits that Genuine Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself portray:

(1.) TOTAL SUBMISSION: All Disciples of Christ Jesus have a Divine Duty to obey His Every Command with no exceptions whatsoever (Jn. 14:15).

(2.) TOTAL MASTERY: All Disciples of Christ Jesus have a Divine Duty to memorize and know by heart every single Word of the Master (Jam. 1:21).

(3.) TOTAL UNDERSTANDING: All Disciples of Christ Jesus have a Divine Duty to fully accept and adopt His Own Interpretations of His Commands (Lk. 24:45).

(4.) TOTAL IMITATION: All Disciples of Christ Jesus have a Divine Duty to adopt and fully conform to His Lifestyle (Acts 11:26).

(5.) TOTAL DUPLICATION: All Disciples of Christ Jesus have a Divine Duty to multiply Disciples for Him (Acts 6:7).

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we magnify You for Who You are and for all You've done in our lives. O Lord, please help us to become Authentic Disciples indeed by internalizing every single one of these Characteristics in Jesus' Mighty Name. Amen.

AGAPE LOVE IS EVIDENCE OF GENUINE DISCIPLESHIP

BIBLE READING: MATTHEW 5:43-48; LUKE 6:3; 1 JOHN 3:16

"Your Strong Love for each other will prove to the world that you are My Disciples.” John 13:35 (The Living Bible)

We have done our due diligence to establish the fact from our previous study that Authentic Disciples of Jesus Christ are essentially disciplined followers of His who deliberately observe His Life and Teachings. At the beginning of his Discourse in the Acts of the Apostles, Luke, the physician, made a basic yet profound statement: The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began BOTH TO DO AND TEACH..." (Acts 1:1 NKJV). Simply put, the Lord Jesus never preached to anyone about anything He Himself failed to practice in the first place. Agape Love was His Primary Motive and Major Driving Force during His Incarnation. The onus, therefore, lies upon us as His Genuine Disciples to always consciously walk in Agape Love, which is the Acid Test of our Christian Faith.

The Holy Bible reveals to us that the Entire Creation eagerly awaits the unveiling or manifestation of the sons of God (Rom. 8:19). Anything we may choose to unveil as True sons of God would either underline or undermine the Testimony of Jesus, which has been committed to our trust as His Able Ministers (1 Tim. 1:11)..It is neither the intensity of our Tongues nor the volume of our Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures that serves as proof to men that we are His Disciples indeed. Walking in Agape Love is so important because many so-called Christian believers pervert the Image of the Loving God before unbelievers by misrepresenting the Lord Jesus.

In his first Epistle, Apostle John the Beloved reminded his own disciples of this remarkable Truth:"He who does not know Love does not know God, FOR GOD IS LOVE" (1 Jn. 4:8 NKJV). This is where the Core of the Whole matter lies: The Primary Proof that a person is a bonafide Disciple of Christ Jesus is his inate Love Capacity. In other words, walking in Love just as He Himself did is Adequate Evidence to the whole world that our Discipleship is neither deceptive nor fake. The Lord God Almighty enable us to continue loving more and more like Him so that multitudes may be drawn to Him.

PRAYER:

Heavenly Father, we glorify You for Who You are and for all You do in our lives. O Lord, please equip us that we may become selfless Dispensers of Agape Love in Jesus' Mighty Name. Amen.
